1 O povo de Israel se alimenta de vento;

corre atrás do vento leste o dia todo.

Acumula mentiras e violência,

faz acordos com a Assíria

e, ao mesmo tempo, envia azeite

para comprar o apoio do Egito.

2 Agora o Senhor apresenta acusações contra Judá;

está prestes a castigar Jacó por sua conduta enganosa,

e lhe retribuir por tudo que fez.

3 Ainda no ventre, Jacó agarrou

o calcanhar de seu irmão;

quando se tornou homem,

lutou com Deus.

4 Sim, lutou com o anjo e venceu;

chorou e suplicou-lhe que o abençoasse.

Ali em Betel, encontrou Deus,

e Deus falou com ele.

5 O Senhor Deus dos Exércitos,

o Senhor é seu nome!

6 Portanto, voltem para seu Deus;

pratiquem o amor e a justiça

e confiem sempre nele.

7 O povo, no entanto, se comporta como comerciantes astutos,

que usam balanças desonestas e gostam de explorar.

8 Israel diz: "Fiquei rico!

Fiz fortuna com meu próprio esforço!

Ninguém descobriu que enganei outros;

meu histórico é impecável!".

9 "Mas eu sou o Senhor, seu Deus,

que os tirou do Egito.

Eu os farei morar em tendas outra vez,

como fazem em feriados sagrados.

10 Enviei meus profetas para adverti-los

com muitas visões e parábolas."

11 Mas os habitantes de Gileade não valem nada,

por causa de seu pecado.

Em Gilgal também sacrificam bois;

seus altares são enfileirados como montes de pedras

à beira de um campo arado.

12 Jacó fugiu para a terra de Arã

e ali cuidou de ovelhas para obter uma esposa.

13 Então, por meio de um profeta,

o Senhor tirou do Egito os descendentes de Jacó;

e, por meio de um profeta,

eles foram protegidos.

14 Mas o povo de Israel

provocou o Senhor amargamente.

Agora ele os sentenciará à morte

como pagamento por seus pecados.

1 Ephraim feeds on wind,

and chases the east wind.

He continually multiplies lies and desolation.

They make a covenant with Assyria,

and oil is carried into Egypt.

2 Yahweh also has a controversy with Judah,

and will punish Jacob according to his ways;

according to his deeds he will repay him.

3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel,

and in his manhood he contended with God.

4 Indeed, he struggled with the angel, and prevailed;

he wept, and made supplication to him.

He found him at Bethel, and there he spoke with us—

5 even Yahweh, the God of Armies.

Yahweh is his name of renown!

6 Therefore turn to your God.

Keep kindness and justice,

and wait continually for your God.

7 A merchant has dishonest scales in his hand.

He loves to defraud.

8 Ephraim said, "Surely I have become rich.

I have found myself wealth.

In all my wealth they won’t find in me any iniquity that is sin."

9 "But I am Yahweh your God from the land of Egypt.

I will yet again make you dwell in tents,

as in the days of the solemn feast.

10 I have also spoken to the prophets,

and I have multiplied visions;

and by the ministry of the prophets I have used parables.

11 If Gilead is wicked,

surely they are worthless.

In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls.

Indeed, their altars are like heaps in the furrows of the field.

12 Jacob fled into the country of Aram.

Israel served to get a wife.

For a wife he tended flocks and herds.

13 By a prophet Yahweh brought Israel up out of Egypt,

and by a prophet he was preserved.

14 Ephraim has bitterly provoked anger.

Therefore his blood will be left on him,

and his Lord will repay his contempt.
