1 Toquem as trombetas em sinal de alarme em Sião! Que se ouça o seu som sobre o meu santo monte! Que toda a gente trema de medo, porque o dia do Senhor se aproxima! 2 Será um dia de escuridão e tristeza, de espessas nuvens e escuridão. Que poderoso exército cobre os montes como a noite! Quão grande e poderoso é este povo! A aparência dessas gentes nunca foi vista anteriormente e nunca será vista de novo pelas gerações que passarem na Terra!

3 Corre fogo diante deles e as chamas queimam por trás. Têm na frente uma bela terra, como o jardim do Éden em toda a sua beleza. Depois de passarem, apenas ficou uma terra inteiramente destruída; nada lhes escapou. 4 Parecem cavalos ligeiros correndo com muita rapidez. 5 Vejam-nos saltando no cimo dos montes! Ouçam o barulho que fazem, semelhante ao ruído de carros de guerra e ao do fogo queimando tudo através dum campo, e também ao dum poderoso exército correndo para a batalha.

6 O terror apodera-se dos povos que os esperam; empalidecem de medo. 7 Estes soldados atacam como guerreiros destemidos. Escalam muros como tropa bem treinada. Avançam sem nada os deter. 8 Não há ninguém a tolher os movimentos do companheiro. Cada um conhece bem aquilo que deve executar. Não há arma que possa detê-los. 9 Carregam sobre a cidade; sobem às muralhas; trepam às casas, entrando como ladrões pelas janelas.

10 A Terra treme perante eles e também os céus. O Sol e a Lua escurecem e as estrelas escondem o seu brilho. 11 O Senhor conduz este exército com a sua voz. Este é o seu poderoso exército que segue as suas ordens. O dia do Senhor é algo de terrível, de tremendo. Quem poderá suportá-lo?

12 É por isso que o Senhor diz: "Voltem-se agora para mim, enquanto é tempo! Deem-me todo o vosso coração! Aproximem-se com jejum, choro e lamentações!"

13 Que o vosso remorso vos leve a dilacerar o coração e não a rasgar a roupa. Convertam-se ao Senhor, vosso Deus, porque é compassivo e misericordioso. Não é facilmente que se acende a sua ira; está cheio de mansidão e ansioso por não ter que castigar. 14 Quem sabe se não desistirá das suas intenções a vosso respeito e se não acabará por vos abençoar em vez de vos punir severamente. Talvez vos abençoe de maneira que venham a ter novamente abundância de cereais e de vinho, para oferecerem ao Senhor, vosso Deus, como dantes!

15 Toquem as trombetas em Sião! Convoquem um jejum e reúnam todo o povo para uma assembleia solene. 16 Tragam todos! Os anciãos, as crianças e até os bebés! Tragam o noivo para fora dos seus aposentos, acompanhado da sua noiva! 17 Os sacerdotes, os ministros do Senhor, pôr-se-ão entre o povo e o altar chorando e orarão desta forma: "Poupa, Senhor, o teu povo! Não permitas que os pagãos o dominem, pois pertence-te! Não permitas que seja alvo do desprezo dos pagãos que dizem: ‘Onde está esse Deus?’ "

18 Então o Senhor terá piedade de vocês, o seu povo, e terá zelo pela honra da sua terra. 19 Responderá assim: "Vejam, estou a mandar-vos muito trigo, vinho novo e azeite, para satisfazer plenamente as vossas necessidades. Nunca mais deixarei que se tornem objeto de zombaria entre as nações. 20 Farei partir esses exércitos que vêm do norte; enviá-los-ei para longe; irão para as terras desoladas donde vieram e ali morrerão; metade dirigir-se-á para o mar Morto e o resto para o Mediterrâneo; o seu mau cheiro subirá da terra."

O Senhor fez um poderoso milagre a vosso favor. 21 Não tenham receio, meu povo! Alegrem-se e regozijem-se, porque o Senhor fez coisas maravilhosas a vosso favor!

22 Não temam, ó animais do campo, pois as pastagens tornar-se-ão verdes de novo! As árvores darão o seu fruto; as figueiras e as vinhas florescerão uma vez mais.

23 Alegra-te, ó povo de Sião, alegra-te no Senhor teu Deus! Porque ele faz descer as boas chuvas de outono com generosidade e justiça. Uma vez mais cairão as chuvas do outono, assim como as da primavera. 24 As eiras terão novamente trigo empilhado e os lagares transbordarão de azeite e de vinho novo.

25 "Vou compensar-vos dos anos em que as colheitas foram devoradas pelos gafanhotos, saltões, lagartas e outros insetos do grande exército que enviei contra vós. 26 De novo terão toda a comida de que necessitarem. Louvem o Senhor, vosso Deus, que faz estes milagres para vocês! Nunca mais o meu povo experimentará desastres semelhantes. 27 E saberão que estou aqui, entre o meu povo de Israel, e que só eu sou o Senhor, vosso Deus. O meu povo nunca mais será ferido com um golpe desta natureza.

28 Depois derramarei o meu Espírito sobre toda a humanidade. Os vossos filhos e filhas profetizarão, os vossos velhos terão sonhos e os vossos jovens visões. 29 Derramarei o meu Espírito, mesmo sobre os servos e servas, naqueles dias. 30 Farei aparecerem maravilhas no céu e na Terra, sangue, fogo e colunas de fumo. 31 O Sol escurecerá e a Lua ficará vermelha como o sangue, antes de vir o grande e terrível dia do Senhor. 32 E todo aquele que invocar o nome do Senhor será salvo. No monte Sião, em Jerusalém, ficará um resto como o Senhor prometeu. Esses são os sobreviventes que o Senhor chama.

1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;*2.1 trumpet: or, cornet 2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.*2.2 of many…: Heb. of generation and generation 3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. 4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. 5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. 6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.*2.6 blackness: Heb. pot 7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: 8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.*2.8 sword: or, dart 9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. 10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: 11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: 13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. 14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: 16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. 17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?*2.17 rule over: or, use a byword against

18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people. 19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: 20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.*2.20 hath…: Heb. hath magnified to do

21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.*2.21 will…: Heb. hath magnified to do 22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength. 23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.*2.23 the former rain moderately: or, a teacher of righteousness*2.23 moderately: Heb. according to righteousness 24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil. 25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. 26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. 27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
