1 Balaão viu bem que os planos do Senhor eram de abençoar Israel. Por isso, nem sequer foi desta vez procurar adivinhá-los, como fizera antes. Em vez disso, voltou-se logo para o deserto. 2 Olhou para os israelitas, que se encontrava lá em baixo, distribuído pelas suas áreas tribais.

E o Espírito de Deus veio sobre ele, 3 declarando esta profecia a respeito do povo:

"Balaão, filho de Beor,

o homem que tem os olhos abertos,

4 que ouve a palavra de Deus,

e que tem a visão da parte do Todo-Poderoso.

Inclina-se até ao chão, mas tem os olhos abertos:

5 Oh! Que alegrias esperam por Israel,

que contentamentos haverá nos lares de Jacob!

6 Vejo-os espalhados diante de mim como vales verdes,

como jardins verdejantes à beira de rios,

como aloés plantadas pelo próprio Senhor,

como cedros junto à fonte de água.

7 A água corre dos reservatórios deste povo,

e com a água, as searas produzirão muito.

O seu rei revelar-se-á como sendo bem maior do que Agague.

O seu reino será exaltado.

8 Deus os tirou do Egito.

Israel tem o poder de um boi selvagem.

Devorará as nações que se lhe opuserem,

esmigalhará os seus ossos em pó,

crivá-los-á de flechas.

9 Ali está Israel descansando como um leão, como uma leoa:

Quem ousará perturbá-lo?

Abençoado será quem te abençoar, ó Israel,

e maldito quem te amaldiçoar!"

10 O rei Balaque estava cheio de cólera. Brandindo os punhos cerrados de fúria, gritou: "Eu chamei-te para amaldiçoares os meus inimigos e afinal acabas por abençoá-los já por três vezes! 11 Fora daqui! Vai lá para donde vieste! Tinha planeado elevar-te a um cargo de grande honra, mas o Senhor privou-te desse privilégio!"

12 Balaão replicou: "Não disse eu aos teus delegados 13 que mesmo que me dessem um palácio cheio de ouro e prata, não poderia ir além das palavras do Senhor? Não poderia dizer uma só palavra da minha lavra. 14 Sim, vou com certeza regressar para donde vim, para a minha terra. Mas primeiro deixa-me dizer-te o que os israelitas vão fazer ao teu povo futuramente."

15 E disse-lhe mais esta profecia:

"Balaão, o filho de Beor,

é o homem cujos olhos estão abertos,

16 que ouve as palavras de Deus,

que conhece os pensamentos do Altíssimo,

que tem a visão da parte do Todo-Poderoso,

que se inclina até ao chão e cujos olhos estão abertos:

17 Vejo o futuro de Israel,

vejo bem longe o seu trilho.

Há de aparecer uma estrela vinda de Jacob!

O governante de Israel esmigalhará o povo de Moabe,

e destruirá os filhos de Sete.

18 Israel virá a possuir todo o Edom e Seir.

Eles vencerão os seus inimigos.

19 De Jacob erguer-se-á um que na sua força

acabará com os sobreviventes da capital."

20 Em seguida, Balaão virou-se para Amaleque e profetizou ainda:

"Amaleque foi o primeiro das nações,

mas o seu destino será a destruição!"

21 Depois, referindo-se aos queneus disse:

"Sim, estás situada num sítio com toda a segurança,

o teu ninho está posto sobre as rochas!

22 Mas os queneus serão também destruídos

e o poderoso exército do rei da Assíria

te levará para longe desta terra!"

23 E concluiu assim estas profecias:

"Ai de nós! Quem poderá viver

quando é Deus quem faz estas coisas?

24 Virão até barcos das costas de Chipre,

que oprimirão tanto Eber como a Assíria.

Também eles hão de ser destruídos."

25 Desta forma, se separaram Balaão e Balaque e regressaram cada um ao seu lugar.

1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.*24.1 to seek…: Heb. to the meeting of 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:*24.3 whose…: Heb. who had his eyes shut, but now opened 4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! 6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. 9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour. 12 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? 14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.*24.17 smite…: or, smite through the princes of 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.*24.20 the nations: the nations that warred against Israel*24.20 that…: or, even to destruction 21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock. 22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.*24.22 the Kenite: Heb. Kain*24.22 until…: or, how long shall it be ere Asshur carry thee away captive 23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever. 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.
