1 Quando Israel chegou à terra de Jazer e à terra de Gileade, as tribos de Rúben e de Gad, que tinham grandes rebanhos de ovelhas, deram-se conta de como aquela região era ótima para o gado. 2 Por isso, vieram ter com Moisés, com o sacerdote Eleazar e com os chefes das outras tribos e disseram-lhes: 3,4 "O Senhor usou-nos para destruir as populações de toda esta zona; Atarote, Dibom, Jazer, Ninra, Hesbom, Eleale, Sebã, Nebo e Beom. Trata-se de uma região belíssima para criar gado e para os rebanhos pastarem. 5 Pedimos pois que nos deixem ficar aqui com esta terra como a parte que nos caberia na partilha geral e não passaremos para além do Jordão."

6 "Ficariam aqui descansados, enquanto os vossos irmãos continuavam a lutar no outro lado do rio?", perguntou Moisés. 7 "Assim estão a desencorajar o resto do povo a passar para a margem de lá, para a terra que o Senhor lhes deu! 8 Isso é o mesmo que fizeram os vossos pais, quando os mandei de Cades-Barneia para observarem secretamente a terra. 9 Quando regressaram, depois de terem passado pelo vale de Escol, desanimaram o povo, levando-o a desistir de entrar na terra prometida. 10 A ira do Senhor ardeu contra eles e jurou então 11 que todos os que tinham sido tirados do Egito, com mais de 20 anos, nunca haveriam de ver a terra que prometera a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacob, visto que recusaram obedecer-lhe. 12 As únicas exceções foram Calebe, filho de Jefoné, o quenezeu, e Josué, filho de Num, porque persistiram em seguir o Senhor com todo o seu coração.

13 Assim, o Senhor fez-nos vaguear dum lado para o outro no deserto, durante 40 anos, até que toda aquela geração que praticou o mal morresse. 14 Agora aqui estão vocês, um bando de pecadores, fazendo exatamente a mesma coisa, seguindo o exemplo dos vossos antepassados, aumentando por isso, a ira do Senhor sobre Israel. 15 Se recusarem dessa forma segui-lo, isso fará ficar todo o povo ainda por mais tempo no deserto, e serão vocês os responsáveis pela destruição do seu povo e por terem trazido tamanha catástrofe sobre esta nação inteira!"

16 "De maneira nenhuma!", esclareceram eles. "A nossa intenção é construir currais e estábulos para o nosso gado e cidades para as nossas crianças; 17 quanto a nós, estamos decididos a ir combater, à frente do povo de Israel, até que os tenhamos estabelecido definitivamente na terra que vão receber. Mas primeiro precisávamos edificar cidades fortificadas aqui para as nossas famílias, para deixá-las em segurança, na eventualidade de algum ataque das populações locais. 18 Não voltaremos à nossa possessão até que o povo tenha ocupado aquilo que é seu por herança. 19 Além disso, não precisamos de ter terra do outro lado do rio; basta-nos aquela com que ficamos aqui nesta zona oriental."

20 Moisés respondeu-lhes: "Pois sim, está bem, se fizerem tudo o que disseram, e se se armarem para a guerra do Senhor, 21 levando as vossas tropas a atravessar o Jordão até que o Senhor tenha expulsado os seus inimigos; quando a terra estiver enfim subjugada na sua presença, 22 não serão culpados perante o Senhor. Terão cumprido o vosso dever para com o Senhor e todo o resto do povo de Israel. Então a terra que está neste lado oriental será o domínio que o Senhor vos dá. 23 Mas se não fizerem como prometeram, terão pecado contra o Senhor, e podem ter a certeza de que virão a receber o devido castigo. 24 Vão então e construam as cidades de que precisam para as vossas famílias e os estábulos para os vossos rebanhos; façam tudo o que disseram."

25 "Faremos precisamente conforme nos mandas", replicaram as gentes de Gad e de Rúben. 26 "Os nossos filhos, mulheres, rebanhos e gado ficarão aqui nas cidades de Gileade. 27 Mas todos os que nos alistarmos iremos lutar pelo Senhor, tal como nos mandaste."

28 Moisés deu assim a sua aprovação à pretensão deles, dizendo ao sacerdote Eleazar, a Josué e aos líderes de Israel: 29 "Se todos os homens das tribos de Gad e de Rúben, que estão recrutados para as guerras do Senhor, forem convosco para além do Jordão, quando a terra for conquistada, deverão dar-lhe o território de Gileade; 30 mas se recusarem, terão de aceitar aquela que lhes for distribuída, entre todos, no país de Canaã."

31 As tribos de Gad e de Rúben disseram de novo: "Estamos dispostos a fazer conforme o mandamento do Senhor; 32 seguiremos todo o exército do Senhor até Canaã, mas depois a nossa terra será aqui deste lado do Jordão."

33 Assim, Moisés distribuiu o território do rei Siom dos amorreus e do rei Ogue de Basã, incluindo terras e cidades, às tribos de Gad e de Rúben, assim como à meia tribo de Manassés, filho de José.

34 O povo de Gad construiu as seguintes cidades: Dibom, Atarote, Aroer, 35 Atarote-Sofã, Jazer, Jogboa, 36 Bete-Nimra, Bete-Harã; todas cidades fortificadas e com currais.

37 O povo de Rúben edificou: Hesbom, Eleale, Quiriataim, 38 Nebo, Baal-Meom e Sibma. Os israelitas mais tarde mudaram o nome de algumas cidades que tinham conquistado e reconstruído.

39 Os descendentes de Maquir, filho de Manassés, foram à terra de Gileade e expulsaram os amorreus na zona que conquistaram. 40 Por isso, Moisés deu também aos maquiritas terra em Gileade e passaram a viver ali. 41 Os homens de Jair, outro agregado da tribo de Manassés, ocuparam igualmente muitas cidades de Gileade, e alterou-se o nome da sua área para Havote-Jair (Aldeias de Jair). 42 Entretanto, um homem chamado Noba, à frente dum destacamento militar, foi a Quenate e conquistou-a, assim como as aldeias dos arredores, ocupando-as e dando àquele sítio o seu próprio nome.

1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle; 2 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying, 3 Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,*32.3 Nimrah: also called, Beth-nimrah*32.3 Shebam: also called, Shibmah*32.3 Beon: also called, Baal-meon 4 Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle: 5 Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

6 And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here? 7 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?*32.7 discourage: Heb. break 8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 9 For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10 And the LORD’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying, 11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:*32.11 wholly…: Heb. fulfilled after me 12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD. 13 And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. 14 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. 15 For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

16 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones: 17 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

20 And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, 21 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, 22 And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. 24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. 25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead: 27 But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.

28 So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel: 29 And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession: 30 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. 31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. 32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours. 33 And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

34 And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, 35 And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,*32.35 Jaazer: also called, Jazer 36 And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.*32.36 Beth-nimrah: also called, Nimrah 37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim, 38 And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.*32.38 gave…: Heb. they called by names the names of the cities 39 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it. 40 And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein. 41 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth-jair. 42 And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
