1 O Senhor deu a Moisés as seguintes instruções: 2 "Manda homens que espreitem e observem secretamente a terra de Canaã, a terra que vou dar a Israel; manda um dos chefes de cada tribo."

3,4 Os israelitas estavam nessa altura acampados no deserto de Parã. Moisés fez como o Senhor lhe ordenara e mandou doze líderes de tribos:

Samua, filho de Zacur, da tribo de Rúben;

5 Safate, filho de Hori, da tribo de Simeão;

6 Calebe, filho de Jefoné, da tribo de Judá;

7 Igal, filho de José, da tribo de Issacar;

8 Oseias, filho de Num, da tribo de Efraim;

9 Palti, filho de Rafu, da tribo de Benjamim;

10 Gadiel, filho de Sodi, da tribo de Zebulão;

11 Gadi, filho de Susi, da tribo de José, ou seja, da tribo de Manassés;

12 Amiel, filho de Gemali, da tribo de Dan;

13 Setur, filho de Micael, da tribo de Aser;

14 Nabi, filho de Vofsi, da tribo de Naftali;

15 Geuel, filho de Maqui, da tribo de Gad.

16 Foi nessa altura que Moisés mudou o nome de Oseias, da tribo de Efraim, em Josué.

17 Ao enviá-los, para irem explorar a terra de Canaã, Moisés deu-lhe estas instruções: "Subam pelo Negueve e depois vão na direção do norte, até às montanhas. 18 Vejam como é a terra; observem como é a gente que lá vive, se são fortes ou fracos, se são muitos ou poucos; 19 se a terra é fértil ou pobre; como são as cidades, se são fortificadas ou abertas; 20 se a terra é rica ou pobre, se há muitas árvores. Tragam algumas amostras dos frutos da terra que encontrarem." Aquele tempo, aliás, era o das primeiras vindimas.

21 E assim eles partiram para espiar a terra, desde o deserto de Zim até Reobe, até perto de Hamate. 22 Indo na direção do norte, passaram primeiro pelo Negueve e chegaram a Hebrom. Ali viram os aimanitas, os sesaitas, os talmaitas, tudo famílias descendentes de Anaque. Aliás Hebrom era muito antiga, tendo sido fundada sete anos antes de Zoã do Egito. 23 Então chegaram a um sítio que agora é conhecido pelo vale de Escol, onde cortaram um cacho de uvas apenas, mas que era tão grande que foram precisos dois homens para o transportar numa vara ao ombro de cada um! Levaram também romãs e figos. 24 Os Israelitas chamaram àquele lugar o vale de Escol cacho, por causa do cacho de uvas que de lá trouxeram.

25 Quarenta dias mais tarde regressaram. 26 E fizeram um relatório a Moisés, a Aarão e a todo o povo de Israel, ali no deserto de Parã, em Cades, e mostraram-lhes a fruta que tinham trazido. 27 Foi este o relato que fizeram: "Chegámos à terra que nos mandaram observar e verificámos que é realmente uma terra magnífica, uma terra que na verdade jorra leite e mel. Esta fruta que de lá trouxemos é a prova disso. 28 Mas o povo que lá vive é muito forte, têm cidades fortificadas muito grandes; mais ainda, vimos ali os gigantes de Anaque! 29 Os amalequitas vivem na região do Negueve, no sul, e nas colinas estão os hititas, os jebuseus e os amorreus; ao longo da costa do mar Mediterrâneo e no vale do Jordão estão os cananeus."

30 Então Calebe tratou de tranquilizar o povo enquanto estavam todos ainda na presença de Moisés: "Vamos e tomemos imediatamente posse da terra, com toda a confiança, porque seremos bem capazes de a conquistar!"

31 "Não, nunca conseguiremos!", diziam por sua vez os outros espias. "É gente muito mais forte do que nós. Esmagavam-nos num instante."

32 Era pois negativo o relatório dos espias: "A terra está cheia de gente guerreira, fortemente defendida. 33 Além disso, até lá vimos alguns dos descendentes do Anaque, a antiga raça de gigantes. Nós parecíamos gafanhotos ao lado deles, tão altos e fortes eles eram!"

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain: 18 And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many; 19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds; 20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

21 So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath. 22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.*13.23 brook: or, valley 24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.*13.24 brook: or, valley*13.24 Eshcol: that is, A cluster of grapes 25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. 28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. 30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.*13.32 men…: Heb. men of statures 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
