1 Israel anda atrás do vento, apascenta-se de vento. Deu presentes ao Egipto e à Assíria para obter auxílio; em troca apenas obtem promessas sem valor.2 Mas o Senhor também tem um contencioso com Judá. Judá, igualmente, será castigado pelos seus maus caminhos.3 Quando nasceu, lutou com o seu irmão; e depois em adulto, lutou contra Deus.4 Sim, lutou com o anjo, e prevaleceu. Chorou e suplicou por uma bênção. Encontrou-se com Deus, em Betel, face a face. Deus falou-lhe - o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos celestiais; Jeová é o seu nome.6 Oh, volta para Deus. Guia-te pelos princípios de rectidão e de amor, e poderás esperar sempre o melhor do teu Deus.7 Mas não. O meu povo é como aqueles comerciantes desonestos, que vendem com balanças falsificadas. Amam a fraude. Efraim gabarola-se: Tudo isto, ganhei-o por mim próprio! Mas as riquezas não cobrem o pecado.9 Eu sou o mesmo Senhor, o mesmo Deus, que vos livrou da escravidão do Egipto; mas também sou aquele que vos mandará habitar em tendas, como fazem em cada ano, na festa dos tabernáculos.10 Mandei-vos os meus profetas para vos advertirem com muitas visões, com muitas parábolas e sonhos.11 Mas os pecados de Gilgal continuam a florescer da mesma maneira. Montes e montes de altares, como sulcos abertos por charrua nos campos, os quais são usados para sacrifícios aos ídolos. Gileade também está cheia de loucos que adoram ídolos.12 Jacob fugiu para a Síria e serviu como pastor para obter uma mulher.13 Então o Senhor tirou o seu povo do Egipto por meio de um profeta que os conduziu e protegeu.14 Contudo Efraim provocou amargamente o Senhor. Deus condená-lo-á à morte, como paga dos seus pecados.

1 Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he continually multiplies lies and violence; and they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.2 Yahweh also has a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings he will recompense him.3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel; and in his manhood he had power with God:4 yes, he had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication to him: he found him at Beth-el, and there he spoke with us,5 even Yahweh, the God of hosts; Yahweh is his memorial [name].6 Therefore you will turn to your God: keep kindness and justice, and wait for your God continually.7 [He is] a trafficker, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.8 And Ephraim said, Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself: in all my labors they will find in me no iniquity which [would be] sin.9 But I am Yahweh your God from the land of Egypt; I will yet again make you to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast.10 I have also spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions; and by the hand of the prophets I have used similitudes.11 Is Gilead iniquity? They are altogether false; in Gilgal they sacrifice bullocks; yes, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the field.12 And Jacob fled into the field of Aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept [sheep].13 And by a prophet Yahweh brought Israel up out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.14 Ephraim has provoked to anger most bitterly: therefore his blood will be left on him, and his reproach his Lord will return to him.
