1 Satanás conseguiu trazer uma desgraça sobre Israel, incitando David a fazer um recenseamento de Israel.2 Faz o recenseamento completo de todo o povo, de uma ponta à outra da terra, e traz-me os totais, disse ele a Joabe e os outros chefes.3 Mas Joabe objectou: Ainda que o Senhor multiplicasse o seu povo cem vezes mais, não continuaria ele a pertencer-te? Então porque é que queres fazer uma coisa dessas? Porque levas tu Israel a pecar?4 Porém o rei contra-argumentou e Joabe acabou por fazer o que lhe fora ordenado. Foi assim por toda a terra de Israel e voltou a Jerusalém. O total da população verificou-se ser de 1.100.000 homens em idade de serviço militar em Israel, e de 470.000 em Judá. Mas não incluiu as tribos de Levi e de Benjamim nestes números, porque esta iniciativa do rei lhe pareceu muito mal.7 Deus também não se agradou com este recenseamento e castigou Israel por isso.8 Mas David disse a Deus: Pequei gravemente, ao fazer tal coisa. Peço-te que me perdoes, porque reconheço que agi loucamente.9 Então o Senhor disse a Gad, o profeta na corte de David: Vai dizer a David: 'O Senhor propõe-te três coisas à escolha. Escolhe a que preferes: três anos de fome no país, três meses de destruições por parte dos inimigos de Israel, ou três dias de uma praga mortal, trazida pelo anjo do Senhor sobre o povo. Pensa nisso e dá-me a resposta, para que a transmita a quem me enviou.'13 É uma decisão que me dá grande angústia, respondeu David. Contudo, prefiro cair nas mãos do Senhor, do que ficar à mercê do poder dos homens, pois sei que a misericórdia do Senhor é muito grande.14 Foi dessa maneira que o Senhor mandou uma praga sobre Israel, de tal forma que chegaram a morrer 70.000 pessoas. Durante essa praga Deus enviou um anjo para destruir Jerusalém; mas, antes de ele começar, Deus, por causa da muita compaixão que sentiu por ela, mandou ao anjo destruidor: Pára! Já basta. O anjo do Senhor estava sobre a eira de Ornã, o jebusita. Quando David viu o anjo do Senhor, entre o céu e a terra, com a sua espada desembainhada apontada para Jerusalém, tanto ele como os anciãos de Israel revestiram-se de pano de saco, e caíram por terra perante o Senhor.17 David disse a Deus: Fui eu quem pecou, ordenando esse recenseamento. Mas estas ovelhas, que fizeram elas de mal? Ó Senhor meu Deus, destrói-me antes a mim e à minha família, mas não o teu povo.18 O anjo do Senhor disse ao profeta Gad que desse instruções a David para construir um altar ao Senhor na eira de Ornã, o jebusita. David foi ter com Ornã, que estava, nesse momento, a malhar o trigo. Ornã viu o anjo, ao virar-se; mas os seus quatro filhos fugiram e esconderam-se. Entretanto Ornã reparou em David que se aproximava. Deixou logo a eira e foi inclinar-se com o rosto em terra perante o rei David.22 David disse-lhe: Vende-me esta eira, pelo preço exacto por que vale, para que construa aqui um altar ao Senhor e a praga cesse.23 Fica já com ela, meu senhor, e usa-a como melhor quiseres, respondeu Ornã a David. Toma também os bois para o holocausto; até os instrumentos que aí estão de madeira podem servir de lenha para o fogo, e o trigo poderá ser para uma oferta de cereais. Tudo te dou.24 Não. Quero comprar-ta pelo seu preço; não posso tomar do que é teu e dá-lo a Deus. Não oferecerei a Deus sacrifícios que nada me custem!25 David pagou pois a Ornã sete quilos de ouro, e construiu ali um altar ao Senhor, sacrificando holocaustos e ofertas de paz sobre ele. A seguir invocou o Senhor, que respondeu enviando fogo do céu para queimar as ofertas que estavam no altar.27 Deus mandou que o anjo pusesse a espada na bainha. Quando David viu que o Senhor respondera, fez novos sacrifícios. Nessa altura o tabernáculo e o altar que Moisés mandara fazer estavam na colina de Gibeão; mas David não teve tempo de ir até lá para implorar ao Senhor, pois que estava aterrorizado com a espada ameaçadora do anjo de Jeová.

1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and incited David to number Israel.2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.3 And Joab answered, the LORD make his people a hundred times more numerous than they are: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred and seventy thousand men that drew sword.6 But Levi and Benjamin he counted not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.7 And God was displeased with this thing, therefore he smote Israel.8 And David said to God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.9 And the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it to thee.11 So Gad came to David, and said to him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee12 Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while the sword of thy enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.13 And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.14 So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thy hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.17 And David said to God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be afflicted.18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and erect an altar to the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.19 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the LORD.20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked, and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.22 Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build an altar in it to the LORD: thou shalt grant it to me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.23 And Ornan said to David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat-offering; I give it all.24 And king David said to Ornan, No; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt-offerings without cost.25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.26 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering.27 And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into its sheath.28 At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt-offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
