1 David convocou todos os responsáveis do reino para Jerusalém - os líderes políticos, os comandantes das doze divisões e os outros oficiais do exército, os superintendentes sobre a sua casa e as propriedades, e todos os outros investidos em autoridade.2 Levantou-se, na frente deles, e dirigiu-lhes desta maneira a palavra: Meus irmãos e meu povo! Era meu desejo construir um templo, no qual a arca da aliança do Senhor pudesse repousar - um lugar onde o nosso Deus estivesse. Armazenei todo o material necessário a essa construção,3 mas Deus disse-me: 'Não serás tu quem me construirá o templo, porque és um guerreiro e fizeste derramar muito sangue.'4 Contudo o Senhor Deus de Israel escolheu-me a mim, de entre todos os membros da família do meu pai, para dar início a uma dinastia que regerá Israel para sempre. Ele escolheu a tribo de Judá, e de entre as famílias de Judá, a família do meu pai, de entre os seus filhos o Senhor se agradou de mim, e fez-me rei sobre Israel. Mais ainda, de entre os meus filhos - e o Senhor deu-me muitos filhos - escolheu Salomão para me suceder no trono do seu reino de Israel. Disse-me assim: 'O teu filho Salomão me construirá o templo; porque o escolhi como meu filho, e serei para ele como um pai. Se ele continuar a obedecer aos meus mandamentos e às minhas instruções, como até aqui, farei que o seu reino dure para sempre.'8 Aqui, perante o povo de Deus, à vista do nosso Deus, mando que guardem cada um dos mandamentos do Senhor, de forma a poderem continuar a reger esta boa terra e deixá-la aos seus filhos, para que a governem para sempre. E tu Salomão, meu filho, entrega-te ao conheci mento do Deus dos teus antepassados. Adora-o e serve-o com um coração puro e uma mente predisposta, pois que o Senhor conhece cada coração e sabe todos os nossos pensamentos. Se o buscares, encontrá-lo-ás; mas se o deixares, manter-se-á afastado de si. Por isso sê muito atento, porque o Senhor te escolheu para construires o seu santo templo. Esforça-te e faz o que ele te manda.11 Então David deu a Salomão a planta do templo, com as suas dependências, as salas para guarda dos tesouros, os quartos nos andares superiores, os quartos interiores, e o santuário para o lugar de misericórdia. Deu também a Salomão os planos para o pátio exterior, para os compartimentos exteriores, para as áreas de armazenamento, e as salas para guardar os tesouros de dons consagrados por pessoas notáveis. Foi o Espírito de Deus quem indicou tudo isso a David.13 O rei passou então para as mãos de Salomão todas as instruções referentes aos ofícios dos vários grupos de sacerdotes e levitas; deu-lhe especificações quanto a cada objecto do templo a ser usado nos actos de cultos e nos sacrifícios.14 David tinha pesado ouro e prata suficientes para mandar fazer cada um desses objectos, assim como a quantidade de ouro necessária para os castiçais e lâmpadas. Pesou também a prata precisa para os castiçais e lâmpadas em prata, conforme o uso de cada um. Pesou o ouro para a mesa na qual seria colocado o pão de presença, e para as outras mesas de ouro; fez o mesmo com a prata para as mesas de prata. Pesou igualmente o ouro para os garfos de ouro usados para pegar na carne dos sacrifícios, e também para as bacias, taças e tijelas de ouro e prata. Finalmente pesou o ouro refinado para o altar de incenso e para os anjos de ouro cujas asas abriam sobre a arca da aliança do Senhor.19 Todos estes planos, disse David a Salomão, foram-me dados por escrito pela mão do Senhor. Depois continuou: Esforça-te, tem coragem e lança mãos à obra. Não te atemorizes pela grandeza da tarefa, porque o Senhor meu Deus está contigo; não te abandonará. Ele próprio velará para que tudo se concretize correctamente. Estão aí indicados os vários grupos de sacerdotes e de levitas que servirão no templo. Poderá haver outros com competências variadas que servirão como voluntários. Além disso tens o exército e a nação inteira sob as tuas ordens.

1 And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men to Jerusalem.2 Then David the king stood upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building:3 But God said to me, Thou shalt not build a house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.4 However the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he approved me to make me king over all Israel:5 And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.6 And he said to me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he shall be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.8 Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD, and in the audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever.9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart, and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou shalt seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou shalt forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.10 Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build a house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it.11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses of it, and of its treasuries, and of its upper chambers, and of its inner parlors, and of the place of the mercy-seat,12 And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers around, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things:13 Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD.14 He gave of gold by weight for things of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; silver also for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service:15 Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for its lamps: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, both for the candlestick, and also for its lamps, according to the use of every candlestick.16 And by weight he gave gold for the tables of show-bread, for every table; and likewise silver for the tables of silver:17 Also pure gold for the flesh-hooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basins he gave gold by weight for every basin; and likewise silver by weight for every basin of silver:18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubim, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD.19 All this, said David, the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern.20 And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong, and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.21 And behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites, even they shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God: and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skillful man, for any manner of service: also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy command.
