1 Depois Hirão, o rei de Tiro, mandou pedreiros e carpinteiros para, ao serviço de David, construírem o palácio de David; forneceu-lhe igualmente muita madeira de cedro.2 David deu-se então conta da razão por que o Senhor o tinha feito rei e tinha tornado o seu reino tão prestigiado: por amor ao seu povo!3 Depois de se mudar para Jerusalém, David casou com outras mulheres e teve muitos filhos e filhas.4 São estes os nomes dos filhos que lhe nasceram em Jerusalém: Samua, Sobabe, Natã, Salomão, Ibar, Elisua, Elpelete, Nogá, Nefegue, Jafia, Elisama, Beeliada e Elifelete.8 Quando os filisteus ouviram que David era o novo rei de Israel, mobilizaram as suas forças para o capturarem. Ao saber disso, David convocou o seu exército. Os filisteus estenderam-se pelo vale de Refaim, e David perguntou ao Senhor: Se eu sair e lutar contra eles, dar-me-ás vitória? O Senhor respondeu-lhe: Sim, entregar-tos-ei nas tuas mãos.11 Então atacou-os em Baal-Perazim e feriu-os. David exultou de alegria: Deus usou-me para derrubar os meus inimigos como se fosse uma torrente de águas rompendo uma barragem! Por essa razão o lugar ficou conhecido por Baal-Perazim .12 Depois da batalha os israelitas recolheram muitas imagens de ídolos que os filisteus tinham deixado por ali, mas David ordenou-lhes que as queimassem.13 Passado algum tempo, eis que os filisteus voltaram de novo à carga no mesmo sítio, e David de novo consultou o Senhor sobre o que havia de fazer. A resposta de Deus foi: Passa por detrás das amoreiras e ataca-os por aí. Quando ouvires um barulho como de gente andando por de cima das copas das amoreiras, então esse será o sinal para atacares; Deus irá à tua frente e destruirá o inimigo.16 David fez como o Senhor lhe mandou, e liquidou o exército filisteu, perseguindo-o desde Gibeão até Gezer.17 A fama de David espalhou-se por toda a parte e o Senhor fez com que todas as nações o temessem.

1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him a house.2 And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was exalted on high, because of his people Israel.3 And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.4 Now these are the names of his children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,5 And Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,6 And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,7 And Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.8 And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.9 And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.10 And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And the LORD said to him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thy hand.11 So they came up to Baal-perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon my enemies by my hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.12 And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.13 And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.14 Therefore David inquired again of God: and God said to him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.15 And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, then thou shalt go out to battle: for God hath gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.16 David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.17 And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.
