1 Quanto à época e ao momento em que isto acontecerá, irmãos, não preciso de vos escrever a esse respeito.2 Porque vocês sabem bem que esse grande dia virá inesperadamente, como um ladrão na noite3 Na verdade, quando as pessoas disserem Agora há paz e segurança!, então virá sobre elas, de súbito, a catástrofe. Será como quando uma grávida começa sentindo as dores do parto. Não poderão escapar, de forma alguma.4 Mas vocês, irmãos, já não vivem mais nas trevas, para que venham a ser surpreendidos por esse momento como por um ladrão.5 Pois são todos filhos da luz, filhos do dia. Não pertencemos mais ao domínio da noite e das trevas.6 Estejamos então vigilantes, e não adormecidos como o resto das gentes. Estejamos alerta e sejamos sóbrios.7 Em geral, é de noite que as pessoas dormem e também que se embebedam.8 Mas nós vivemos na luz do dia; e é por isso que devemos ser moderados, revestindo-nos da couraça da fé e do amor, tendo como capacete a esperança da salvação9 Deus não nos destina à condenação, mas antes à posse da salvação, através de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo,c10 o qual morreu por nós para que, quer estejamos vivos, quer estejamos já mortos, quando ele vier, possamos viver juntamente com ele.11 Por isso animem-se uns aos outros, contribuindo mutuamente para o fortalecimento da fé; é aliás isso que têm vindo a fazer.12 E pedimo-vos, irmãos, que respeitem aqueles que trabalham no vosso meio ao serviço do Senhor, que vos dirigem e vos aconselham.13 Mostrem-lhes toda a vossa estima e afeição, porque é justo, em razão das funções que desempenham na obra de Deus. Vivam em paz uns com os outros.14 Admoestem os que são preguiçosos; animem os que se desencorajam facilmente; fortaleçam os que estão fracos; sejam pacientes com todos15 Que ninguém retribua o mal com o mal. Que o bem seja a regra da vossa vida, não só entre crentes, como para com todos.16 Conservem em todo momento a vossa alegria17 Orem sem cessar!18 Que todas as coisas sejam uma razão de expressarem o vosso reconhecimento a Deus. Esta é a vontade de Deus para convosco, os que vivem em Cristo Jesus.19 Não entravem a acção do Espírito de Deus.20 Não desprezem as profecias,21 mas examinem tudo o que é dito. Guardem o que for bom.22 Evitem qualquer espécie de mal.23 E que o Deus de paz, ele próprio, vos torne puros de uma forma integral. E que todo o vosso ser -espírito, alma e corpo- se mantenha plenamente sem culpa, até ao dia em que o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo voltar24 Deus, que vos chamou, é fiel. E ele tudo fará por vocês.25 Orem por nós, irmãos. Dêem a todos os crentes um beijo fraterno.27 Em nome do Senhor vos peço que sem falta façam ler esta carta a todos os crentes, os filhos de Deus.28 O meu voto é que a graça de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo seja convosco.

1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write to you.2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.5 Ye are all children of light, and children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.7 For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken, are drunken in the night.8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breast-plate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.11 Wherefore, comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are disorderly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient towards all men.15 See that none render evil for evil to any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.16 Rejoice evermore.17 Pray without ceasing.18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.19 Quench not the spirit.20 Despise not prophesyings.21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.25 Brethren, pray for us.26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
