1 Algum tempo depois, morreu o rei amonita, e o seu filho Hanum ascendeu ao trono em seu lugar. David decidiu o seguinte:2 Hei-de usar de beneficência para com ele, visto que o seu pai Naás sempre foi leal para comigo. Por isso David enviou embaixadores que expressassem as suas condolências a Hanum pelo falecimento do pai.3 Contudo os conselheiros militares de Hanum falaram desta forma ao rei amonita: Esta gente não veio honrar a memória do teu pai. David mandou-os para espiarem a cidade antes de a atacar!4 Hanum então reteve os homens de David, rapou-lhes metade da barba, cortou-lhes a roupa que traziam até à altura das ancas e mandou-os embora meio nus. Quando David teve conhecimento do que acontecera, disse-lhes que ficassem em Jericó até lhes crescer novamente a barba, pois que aqueles homens estavam incomodados com o aspecto que tinham.6 Nessa altura o povo de Amom deu-se conta de como tinha suscitado seriamente a ira de David; em consequência, alugaram vinte mil mercenários sírios, da terra de Reobe e de Zobá, outros mil ao rei de Maaca e dez mil da terra de Tobe.7 Quando contaram isto a David, este mandou Joabe e todo o exército israelita para os atacar. Os amonitas defendiam as entradas da cidade, enquanto os sírios de Zobá, Reobe, Tobe e Maaca lutavam no campo.9 Joabe, vendo que tinha de lutar em duas frentes, pôs de parte os melhores combatentes da sua tropa e, sob o seu próprio comando, levou-os a confrontarem-se com os sírios na planície. O resto do exército deixou-o às ordens do seu irmão Abisai, que devia atacar a cidade.11 Se eu precisar de ajuda contra os sírios, vem ajudar-me, combinou Joabe com ele. E se forem os amonitas mais fortes do que tu, sou eu quem virá em teu auxílio. Coragem! Devemos actuar com muita energia se queremos salvar o nosso povo e as cidades do nosso Deus. Que se faça a vontade do Senhor.13 Seguidamente, quando Joabe e as suas tropas atacaram, os sírios começaram a fugir.14 Por sua vez os amonitas ao verem isso também se puseram a fugir para dentro da cidade. Joabe retirou-se para Jerusalém.15 Os sírios viram bem que não eram suficientes para fazer frente ao exército de Israel, por isso, ao reagruparem-se, engrossaram os seus efectivos com um contingente adicional, mobilizado por Hadadezer do outro lado do rio Eufrates. Estas tropas chegaram a Helã sob as ordens de Sobaque, comandante das forças militares de Hadadezer.17 Tendo tido conhecimento disso tudo, David decidiu chefiar pessoalmente o seu exército e foi para Helã, onde os sírios tinha atacado. Mas aí os sírios fugiram de novo dos israelitas, mas desta vez deixando mortos no campo de luta setecentos condutores de carros de combate e ainda quarenta mil cavaleiros, incluindo o general Sobaque. Os aliados de Hadadezer, constatando que os sírios tinham sido derrotados, renderam-se a David e tornaram-se seus servos. A partir de então os sírios tiveram medo de socorrer mais vez alguma os amonitas.

1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.2 Then said David, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, that he hath sent comforters to thee? hath not David rather sent his servants to thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.5 When they told it to David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards are grown, and then return.6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he selected of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.11 And he said, If the Syrians shall be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon shall be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.13 And Joab and the people that were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they assembled themselves.16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.17 And when it was told David, he assembled all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
