1 Agora, disse-lhe Aitofel, dá-me doze mil homens para que vá atrás de David esta noite.2 Cairei sobre ele enquanto está cansado e abatido, e as suas tropas ficarão em pânico e fugirão; procurarei matar apenas o rei, poupando os que estão com ele, os quais te trarei posteriormente.4 Absalão e todos os anciãos de Israel aprovaram este plano.5 No entanto Absalão ainda deu a seguinte ordem: Perguntem a Husai, o arquita, o que é que ele pensa disso.6 Quando Husai chegou, Absalão pô-lo ao corrente do plano de Aitofel, e perguntou-lhe. Qual é a tua opinião? Achas que devemos seguir os conselhos de Aitofel? Se não tens a mesma opinião, fala à vontade.7 Pois bem, respondeu Husai, desta vez Aitofel engana-se. Conheces bem o teu pai e os seus homens; são valentes guerreiros e provavelmente estão tão revoltados como uma ursa a quem tenham roubado as crias. Além disso, o teu pai, que é um velho soldado, não iria passar a noite no meio da sua tropa. Muito possivelmente está já escondido nalguma cova ou gruta. Quando aparecer para atacar, bastará que alguns dos teus homens caia para que se gere o pânico e todos se ponham a gritar em como a tua gente está sendo morta toda. Então até os mais bravos de entre eles, mesmo com o coração de leões, ficarão paralisados de medo. Porque todo o povo inteiro sabe como o teu pai é um homem poderoso e como são corajosos os seus soldados.11 Portanto a minha sugestão é que mobilizes todo o exército de Israel, desde Dan até Berseba, para que a tua força seja grande. Acho mesmo que deverias conduzir pessoalmente esse exército. E quando nos encontrarmos com ele poderemos destruí-los na totalidade, sem que fique um só com vida. No caso do teu pai se ter escondido nalguma cidade, teremos de qualquer forma todo o exército de Israel sob as tuas ordens, e poderemos levar cordas, derrubar as muralhas e fazer delas um montão de pedras no vale mais próximo.14 Absalão e todas as outras pessoas acharam o conselho de Husai melhor que o de Aitofel. Mas era o Senhor quem estava a intervir para que a opinião deste último fosse derrotada, embora fosse mais sensata, para que a iniciativa de Absalão falhasse.15 Husai disse a Zadoque e a Abiatar, os sacerdotes, o que Aitofel aconselhara e o que ele próprio contrapusera.16 Depressa!, disse-lhes ele. Procurem David e digam-lhe que não fique nas margens do Jordão esta noite, mas que passe já para além do deserto, se não, morrerá, ele e todo o seu exército.17 Jónatas e Aimaaz tinham ficado em En-Rogel, para não serem vistos a entrarem e a sairem da cidade. Tinham combinado antes, que uma criada lhes levaria a mensagem a ser entregue a David. No entanto houve um rapaz que os viu deixar En-Rogel para ir ter com David, e que veio dizê-lo a Absalão. Contudo eles puderam ainda ocultar-se em Baurim, onde alguém os escondeu dentro dum poço no seu jardim. A mulher desse indivíduo pôs um pano a tapar a boca do poço, deitou-lhe grão em cima, como se fosse para secar ao sol, e ninguém suspeitou do esconderijo.20 Quando a gente de Absalão chegou ali e perguntou à mulher se tinha visto Aimaaz e Jónatas, ela disse-lhe que tinham atravesado o ribeiro e passado além. Assim, cansaram-se de os procurar e voltaram para trás.21 Os dois filhos dos sacerdotes entretanto sairam do poço e correram até junto de David: Rápido, atravessa já o Jordão, esta noite mesmo! E deram-lhe a conhecer como Aitofel tinha aconselhado a que ele fosse capturado e morto.22 David e todos os que estavam com ele atravessaram o rio durante a noite e de madrugada estavam do outro lado.23 Aitofel, vendo que o seu conselho não foi seguido, albardou um jumento, foi para a povoação onde morava, pôs em ordem as suas coisas e enforcou-se. Assim morreu e foi enterrado junto do seu pai.24 David em breve chegou a Maanaim. Absalão, durante esse tempo, mobilizou todo o exército de Israel e atravessou o rio Jordão. Nomeou Amasa como general do seu exército, em substituição de Joabe. (Amasa era primo em segundo grau de Joabe; seu pai era Itra, um ismaelita, e sua mãe, Abigail, filha de Naás, irmã de Zeruía, a mãe de Joabe.)26 Absalão e as tropas israelitas acamparam na terra de Gileade.27 Quando David chegou a Maanaim, foi muito bem recebido por Sobi (filho de Naás de Rabá, um amonita) e por Maquir (filho de Amiel de Lodebar) e por Barzilai (um gileadita de Rogelim). Trouxeram-lhes colchões, vasilhas de barro, trigo, cevada, farinha, grão torrado, favas e lentilhas também torradas, assim como mel, manteiga e queijo. Porque diziam: Devem estar muito cansados, com fome e com sede depois de uma marcha tão longa pelo deserto.

1 Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night;2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:3 And I will bring back all the people to thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.4 And the saying, pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.6 And when Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou.7 And Hushai said to Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given, is not good at this time.8 For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.10 And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they who are with him are valiant men.11 Therefore I counsel that all Israel should be generally gathered to thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou shouldst go to battle in thy own person.12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.13 Moreover, if he shall have entered into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there is not one small stone found there.14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.15 Then said Hushai to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled.16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a maid servant went and told them; and they went and told king David.18 Nevertheless, a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; into which they descended.19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and spread ground corn upon it; and the thing was not known.20 And when Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said to them, they have gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.21 And it came to pass, after they had departed, that they came out of the well, and went and told king David, and said to David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counseled against you.22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that had not gone over Jordan.23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and went home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died. and was buried in the sepulcher of his father.24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.25 And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra, an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab's mother.26 So Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.27 And it came to pass, when David had come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,28 Brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,29 And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of cows, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
