1 Ouve, ó Israel! Hoje vão atravessar o rio Jordão e começar a tirar às nações do lado de lá a posse dessas terras. São nações muito maiores e mais poderosas do que vocês! Vivem em cidades rodeadas de altas muralhas. No meio delas vivem os famosos gigantes de Anaque, a quem ninguém pode fazer frente!3 Mas o Senhor vosso Deus irá adiante de vocês e será para eles como um fogo devorador que os consumirá de tal forma que num curto espaço de tempo vocês os conquistarão e os lançarão fora dali.4 Então, quando o Senhor tiver feito isso em vosso favor, não digam para vocês mesmos: 'O Senhor ajudou-nos porque somos bons e justos!' Não, de maneira nenhuma; foi antes por causa da maldade dessas outras nações que ele fez isso. Não foi por que vocês fossem gente recta e honesta que o Senhor os expulsou na vossa frente. Repito, foi por causa da impiedade desses povos, e também por causa daquilo que prometera aos vossos antepassados, Abraão, Isaque e Jacob. Jeová o vosso Deus dá-vos esta boa terra não por causa de vocês serem especialmente justos, pois que não o são, vocês são antes gente má e teimosa.7 Não se lembram vocês como continuamente provocavam a ira do Senhor vosso Deus no deserto desde o dia em que deixaram o Egipto até agora? Durante todo esse tempo, constantemente se revoltaram contra ele!8 Não se lembram de como o encolorizaram no Monte Horebe? Ele estava pronto a destruir-vos. Eu estava lá na montanha nessa altura, recebendo os termos em que o Senhor estabelecia convosco uma aliança; eram duas placas de pedra com essas leis lá inseridas. Lá estive por quarenta dias e quarenta noites sem nada comer por todo esse tempo; nem água sequer bebi. No fim desses quarenta dias e noites o Senhor entregou-me a aliança, as placas onde ele tinha escrito os mandamentos que ordenara oralmente, falando convosco da montanha cercada de fogo, enquanto o povo olhava lá em baixo.12 O Senhor disse-me que descesse depressa, porque o povo que eu conduzira para fora do Egipto se corrompera, afastando-se rapidamente das leis de Deus e fizeram um ídolo de metal fundido.13 'Deixa-me sozinho, para que destrua este povo mau e obstinado15 Desci então da montanha, trazendo nas mãos as duas lápides com as leis de Deus lá inscritas. E ao descer logo vi lá em baixo o bezerro que vocês tinham feito, no vosso terrível pecado contra o Senhor vosso Deus. Como se desviaram tão depressa! Levantei as placas e lancei-as ao chão, partindo-as, sob os vossos olhos! Então durante outros quarenta dias e noites estive perante o Senhor, sem nada comer nem beber; pois que vocês tinham feito aquilo que o Senhor mais abominava, provocando assim grandemente a sua ira. Receei muito por vocês nessa altura, porque vi bem como o Senhor estava mesmo pronto para vos destruir. Mas ainda dessa vez ele aceitou ouvir-me. Arão corria grande risco porque o Senhor estava muito irado contra ele; mas eu orei e o Senhor poupou-o. Tomei então o vosso pecado - quer dizer, o bezerro que tinham feito - fi-lo arder e moí-o até ficar em pó; seguidamente lancei isso para a torrente que jorrava da montanha.22 Depois, foi novamente em Tabera, e mais tarde outra vez em Massá, que vocês encolerizaram o Senhor. E ainda em Quibrote-Hatava fizeram o mesmo. Em Cades-Barneia, quando o Senhor vos disse para penetrarem na terra que vos tinha dado, vocês revoltaram-se e não quiseram acreditar que ele vos ajudaria; recusaram mais uma vez obedecer-lhe. Sim, vocês foram rebeldes contra o Senhor desde os primeiros dias em que vos conheci. Por isso estive prostrado perante o Senhor esses quarenta dias e noites, quando o Senhor estava pronto a destruir-vos.26 Eu orei dizendo-lhe: 'Ó Senhor Deus, não destruas o teu próprio povo. São a tua possessão, que salvaste do Egipto com o teu grande poder, com a tua força gloriosa. Não leves em consideração a rebelião, o endurecimento deste povo, lembra-te em vez disso das promessas que fizeste aos teus servos Abraão, Isaque e Jacob. Oh, peço-te que perdoes a tremenda maldade e o pecado deste povo. Porque se o destruires, os egípcios dirão - Foi por causa do Senhor não ter sido capaz de os levar até à terra que lhes prometera! - ou então ainda - Destruiu-os porque afinal lhes queria mal; trouxe-os para o deserto para os assassinar ali! - Mas, Senhor, eles são o teu povo, a tua possessão, que tiraste do Egipto pelo teu grande poder, com o teu poderoso braço.'

1 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard it said, Who can stand before the children of Anak!3 Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he who goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said to thee.4 Speak not thou in thy heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations, the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD swore to thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.6 Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiff-necked people.7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart from the land of Egypt, until ye came to this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you.9 When I ascended the mount, to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither ate bread, nor drank water:10 And the LORD delivered to me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words which the LORD spoke with you in the mount, from the midst of the fire, in the day of the assembly.11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.12 And the LORD said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.13 Furthermore, the LORD spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people:14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.16 And I looked, and behold, ye had sinned against the LORD your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly from the way which the LORD had commanded you.17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I neither ate bread, nor drank water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.19 (For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you.) But the LORD hearkened to me at that time also.20 And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust of it into the brook that descended from the mount.22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath.23 Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.24 Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.25 Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.26 I prayed therefore to the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thy inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not to the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:28 Lest the land from which thou hast brought us should say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.29 Yet they are thy people and thy inheritance which thou hast brought out by thy mighty power and by thy out-stretched arm.
