1 Obedeçam a todos os mandamentos que vos dou hoje. Se o fizerem, não só serão mantidos com vida, como até se hão-de multiplicar, e poderão entrar na terra que o Senhor prometeu aos vossos antepassados e conquistá-la.2 Vocês lembram-se como o Senhor vos conduziu através do deserto durante todos estes quarenta anos, humilhando-vos e experimentando-vos para saber o que estava no vosso coração, se sim ou não guardariam os seus mandamentos.3 Sim, ele humilhou-vos, deixando-vos ter fome e depois alimentando-vos como o maná, comida essa que nem vocês nem os vossos pais tinham conhecido antes. E fez isso para vos dar a entender que o comer não representa tudo na vida; a verdadeira vida vem das palavras de Deus.4 Por todos estes quarenta anos o vosso vestuário não se estragou, nem envelheceu; os vossos pés não empolaram nem incharam.5 Por isso terão de reconhecer que, tal como um homem castiga o seu filho, assim o Senhor vos castiga, para vosso bem.6 Obedeçam às leis do Senhor vosso Deus. Andem nos seus caminhos e respeitem-no. Porque o Senhor vosso Deus vos traz para uma boa terra, com ribeiros, fontes e poços profundos, com vales e colinas. Uma terra de trigo e de cevada, de vinhas, de figueiras, de romãzeiras, de oliveiras e de mel; é uma terra de fartura onde não haverá escassez de coisa nenhuma; onde o ferro é tão abundante como a pedra e onde se encontra cobre nas colinas. Quando pois tiverem comido a fartar, agradeçam e louvem o Senhor vosso Deus pela boa terra que vos deu.11 Mas é nessas alturas que deverão ser mais atentos! Tenham cuidado que a vossa abundância não vos faça esquecerem-se do Senhor vosso Deus, e virem a desobedecer-lhe.12 Porque quando começarem a ficar cheios e prósperos, e se puserem a construir belas casas para habitarem, quando os vossos rebanhos e manadas se tiverem tornado muito grandes, quando tiverem abundância de prata e de ouro, então é tempo de ter muito cuidado, para não se tornarem orgulhosos, e não se esquecerem do Senhor que vos arrancou da servidão da terra do Egipto. Esforcem-se por nunca se esquecerem de Deus que vos levou através do terrível deserto, cheio de perigosas serpentes e de escorpiões, onde o calor ardia e a secura era tão grande que o Senhor teve de tirar-vos água de uma rocha! Alimentou-vos com o maná no deserto, o qual era uma espécie de pão que vocês nunca dantes tinham conhecido; e isso para que aprendessem a humildade, para vos pôr à prova e para que Deus vos fizesse prosperar no futuro. Ele agiu dessa maneira para que vocês se dessem bem conta de que não foi pelo vosso próprio poder e força que prosperaram. Lembrem-se de que foi o Senhor vosso Deus quem vos deu a possibilidade de enriquecerem, e que se o fez foi para cumprir a promessa que fizera aos vossos antepassados.19 Contudo, se se esquecerem do Senhor vosso Deus e adorarem outros deuses, seguindo os vossos maus caminhos, então com toda a certeza hão-de perecer tal como ele fez com outras nações no passado. Esse será pois o vosso destino, também, se não obedecerem ao Senhor vosso Deus.

1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers.2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments, or not.3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.4 Thy raiment hath not become old upon thee, neither hath thy foot swelled these forty years.5 Thou shalt also consider in thy heart, that as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains, and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig-trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive-oil, and honey;9 A land in which thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.11 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:12 Lest when thou hast eaten, and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them;13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold are increased, and all that thou hast is increased;14 Then thy heart shall be lifted up, and thou shalt forget the LORD thy God (who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;)15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drouth, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end.17 And thou shalt say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to thy fathers, as it is this day.19 And it shall be, if thou shalt at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.
