1 Quando acabou esta conversa de Jesus com os discípulos, disse-lhes:2 Como sabem, a festa da Páscoa começa dentro de dois dias, e serei traído e crucificado.3 Naquela mesma altura, os principais sacerdotes e outros líderes do povo estavam reunidos na residência de Caifás, o supremo sacerdote, para combinar como haviam de prender Jesus sem dar nas vistas, e como matá-lo:5 Não o façamos, porém, durante a festa da Páscoa, porque haveria tumulto.6 Entretanto, Jesus estava em Betânia, na casa de Simão, o leproso. Enquanto comia, entrou uma mulher com um frasco de perfume muito caro e despejou-lho sobre a cabeça.8 Que desperdício de dinheiro!, disseram os discípulos, zangados. Mais valia tê-lo vendido por bom preço e dar o produto aos pobres.10 Jesus percebeu os seus pensamentos e disse: Porque falam assim se ela me fez uma boa acção? Os pobres sempre os terão convosco, mas a mim nem sempre me terão. Ela derramou este perfume sobre mim para preparar o meu corpo para a sepultura, e por isso será lembrada para sempre. Este gesto será contado no mundo inteiro onde quer que for pregado este evangelho.14 Então Judas Iscariotes, um dos doze discípulos, foi ter com os principais sacerdotes e perguntou: Quanto estão dispostos a pagar-me para entregar Jesus nas vossas mãos? E eles deram-lhe trinta moedas de prata.16 A partir dali, Judas mantinha-se atento, à espera de ocasião para atraiçoar Jesus e entregá-lo.17 No primeiro dia das cerimónias da Páscoa, quando em todos os lares judaicos só se comia pão que tivesse sido feito sem fermento, os discípulos foram ter com Jesus e perguntaram: Onde vamos tomar a refeição da Páscoa?18 Vão à cidade, procurem um certo homem e dêem-lhe este recado: 'O nosso Mestre diz: Chegou a minha hora, e pretendo tomar a refeição da Páscoa em tua casa com os meus discípulos .19 Então os discípulos fizeram como ele mandou e prepararam a ceia lá.20 Naquela noite, estando a comer com os doze, disse:Um de vocês vai trair-me.22 Logo a tristeza entrou no coração deles, e cada qual perguntava: Serei eu?23 Jesus respondeu: É aquele que se serve ao mesmo tempo que eu, do mesmo prato.24 Porque eu tenho de morrer, é certo, como foi anunciado há muito tempo; mas ai do homem que me vai trair! Mais lhe valia nunca ter nascido.25 Também Judas lhe perguntara: Mestre, serei eu? E Jesus respondera: Tu próprio o disseste.26 Quando estavam a comer, Jesus pegou no pão e, abençoando-o, partiu-o em pedaços, deu-os aos discípulos e disse: Tomem e comam, porque isto é o meu corpo27 E levantando um cálice com vinho, agradeceu a Deus por ele, entregou-o aos discípulos e disse: Que cada um beba dele,28 porque isto é o meu sangue, que torna firme o novo pacto, e é derramado para perdoar os pecados de muitos.29 Prestem atenção às minhas palavras: não beberei outra vez deste vinho senão no dia em que o beber de novo convosco no reino do meu Pai.h30 Depois de cantarem um hino, foram até ao Monte das Oliveiras.31 Então Jesus disse-lhes: Esta noite todos vocês me vão abandonar. Porque vem nas Escrituras que 'Deus ferirá o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão espalhadas.32 Mas, depois de ter voltado à vida, irei para a Galileia e encontrar-me-ei convosco ali. Pedro exclamou:33 Mesmo que todos os outros te abandonem, eu não. Mas Jesus retorquiu-lhe:A verdade é que esta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante pela madrugada, negar-me-ás três vezes!35 Nem que seja preciso morrer!, teimou Pedro. E todos os outros discípulos disseram o mesmo.36 Jesus levou-os a um lugar chamado Getsemane e mandou-lhes que se sentassem e esperassem enquanto ia mais adiante para orar.37 Levou consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, Tiago e João, e começou a sentir tristeza e angústia:38 A minha alma está cheia de uma tristeza mortal. Fiquem aqui. Fiquem acordados comigo.39 Avançou um pouco e, deitando-se de rosto em terra, orou: Meu Pai, se é possível, que este cálice seja afastado de mim. Contudo, seja feita a tua vontade e não a minha.40 Voltou depois para junto dos três discípulos, mas encontrou-os a dormir. Pedro, então não pudeste ficar acordado comigo nem por uma hora? Conservem-se atentos e orem, para que a tentação não vos vença. O espírito, na verdade, está pronto, mas o corpo é realmente fraco!42 Outra vez os deixou e orou: Meu Pai, se este cálice não puder ser evitado enquanto o não beber todo, cumpra-se a tua vontade43 Voltou de novo para junto dos discípulos e encontrou-os outra vez a dormir, porque tinham os olhos pesados de sono.44 Tornou a orar pela terceira vez, dizendo a mesma coisa.45 Então foi ter com os discípulos: Agora já podem dormir e repousar. Chegou a hora! Vou ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores!46 Levantem-se, vamos andando! Olhem, já aí vem aquele que me traiu!47 Naquele momento, enquanto assim falava, Judas, um dos doze, chegou com muito povo armado de espadas e paus, enviado pelos dirigentes judaicos. Judas tinha-lhes dito que prendessem o homem a quem ele cumprimentasse. Assim, Judas foi ter com Jesus: Eu te saúdo, Mestre!, e beijou-o.50 Amigo, faz já o que tens a fazer. Então os homens agarraram Jesus. Um dos discípulos puxou de uma espada e cortou a orelha do criado do supremo sacerdote.52 Guarda a espada. Quem a usa provoca a sua própria morte. Não percebes que bastava eu pedir ao meu Pai doze exércitos de anjos para nos protegerem, para ele os mandar imediatamente? Mas, se o fizesse, como se cumpririam as Escrituras, que há muito anunciaram o que está a acontecer agora?55 Então Jesus falou para aquela gente: Serei por acaso algum bandido perigoso, que vos fosse preciso armarem-se com espadas e paus para me levarem preso? Todos os dias estava convosco a ensinar no templo e não me prenderam. Mas tudo isto acontece para dar cumprimento às palavras dos profetas de que falam as Escrituras. Naquela altura, todos os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.57 Aqueles que prenderam Jesus levaram-no para a casa do supremo sacerdote Caifás, onde se encontravam reunidos todos os dirigentes judaicos.58 Entretanto, Pedro ia-os seguindo de longe e, chegado ao pátio da casa do supremo sacerdote, entrou e sentou-se com os soldados, à espera de ver o que fariam a Jesus.59 Os principais sacerdotes e até todo o supremo tribunal judaico reuniram-se lá, e procuravam testemunhas que mentissem acerca de Jesus a fim de arranjarem contra ele uma acusação que levasse à sentença de morte. Mas, embora achassem muitos que acabaram por se revelar como testemunhas falsas, contradiziam-se uns aos outros. Por fim, encontraram dois homens que afirmaram: Este disse que era capaz de destruir o templo de Deus e construí-lo outra vez em três dias.62 O supremo sacerdote levantou-se e perguntou a Jesus: Responde se disseste isso ou não? Mas Jesus continuou calado, pelo que o supremo sacerdote lhe mandou: Em nome do Deus vivo, declara-nos se afirmas ou não ser o Messias, o Filho de Deus.64 Jesus replicou: Sim, sou. E hão-de ver-me a mim, o Filho do Homem, sentado à direita de Deus, e voltando nas nuvens do céu.65 Então o supremo sacerdote rasgou as suas roupas e gritou: Ofensa a Deus! Para que precisamos nós de outras testemunhas? Todos ouviram o que ele disse! Qual é a vossa sentença? E gritaram:A morte! Tem de morrer!67 Cuspiram-lhe na cara, bateram-lhe, e outros até lhe deram bofetadas, dizendo: Profetiza-nos, Messias, quem foi que agora te bateu?69 Entretanto, Pedro continuava sentado no pátio, e uma rapariga disse-lhe: Tu estavas com Jesus; tu e ele são da Galileia. Mas Pedro negou, zangado:Não faço ideia do que dizes.71 Pouco depois, fora da porta, outra rapariga reparou nele e observou aos que ali se encontravam: Este também estava com Jesus de Nazaré. Mas Pedro tornou a negar, jurando, ainda por cima:Eu nem sequer o conheço.73 Decorrido algum tempo, os homens que tinham estado ali aproximaram-se dele e disseram: Sabemos que és um dos seus discípulos por causa do teu sotaque galileu.74 Pedro então começou a jurar e a praguejar: Eu nem sequer conheço esse homem, repetia. E logo o galo cantou.75 Pedro lembrou-se de que Jesus lhe tinha dito: Antes que o galo cante, negar-me-ás três vezes. E, saindo dali, chorou amargamente.

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,2 Ye know that after two days is the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.3 Then assembled the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.5 But they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there be an uproar among the people.6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,7 There came to him a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at table.8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.10 When Jesus understood it, he said to them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.13 Verily I say to you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, which this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,15 And said, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him to you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say to him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.20 Now when the evening was come, he sat down with the twelve.21 And as they were eating, he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you will betray me.22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say to him, Lord, is it I?23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me.24 The Son of man goeth, as it is written concerning him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man, if he had not been born.25 Then Judas, who betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said to him, Thou hast said.26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sin.29 But I say to you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.31 Then saith Jesus to them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.33 Peter answered and said to him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.34 Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, that this night, before the cock shall crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.35 Peter said to him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.36 Then cometh Jesus with them to a place called Gethsemane, and saith to the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.37 And he took with him Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.38 Then saith he to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even to death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.40 And he cometh to the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith to Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.45 Then he cometh to his disciples, and saith to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.47 And while he was yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staffs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.48 Now he that betrayed him, gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; hold him fast.49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail Master; and kissed him.50 And Jesus said to him, Friend, Why art thou come? Then they came, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.51 And behold, one of them, who were with Jesus, stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off his ear.52 Then said Jesus to him, Put up again thy sword into its place: for all they that take the sword, shall perish by the sword.53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he will presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staffs to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.58 But Peter followed him at a distance, to the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants to see the end.59 Now the chief priests and elders, and all the council, sought false testimony against Jesus, to put him to death;60 But found none: and, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,61 And said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.62 And the high priest arose, and said to him, Answerest thou nothing, what is it which these testify against thee?63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ the Son of God.64 Jesus saith to him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say to you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.67 Then they spit in his face, and buffetted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,68 Saying, Prophesy to us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came to him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.71 And when he had gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said to them that were there, This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth.72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.73 And after a while came to him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech betrayeth thee.74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crowed.75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who said to him, Before the cock shall crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
