1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he passed on from thence, to be teaching and proclaiming in their cities.2 Now, John, hearing in the prison the works of the Christ, sending through his disciples,3 said unto him, Art, thou, the coming one? or, a different one, are we to expect?4 And, answering, Jesus said unto themGo report unto John what ye do hear and see:5 The, blind, recover sight, and, the lame, walk, lepers, are cleansed, and, the deaf, hear,and, the dead, are raised, and, the destitute, are told the joyful tidings;6 And, happy, is he, whosoever shall not find cause of stumbling, in me.7 But, as these were going their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes, concerning John,What went ye forth into the wilderness to gaze at? A reed, by a wind, shaken?8 But what went ye forth to see? A man, in soft clothing, arrayed? Lo! they who soft clothing do wear, are in the houses of kings.9 But why went ye forth? A prophet, to see? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.10 This, is he, concerning whom it is written,Lo! I, send my messenger before thy face, who shall make ready thy way before thee!11 Verily, I say unto youThere hath not arisen, among such as are born of women, a greater than John the Immerser,yet, he that is less in the kingdom of the heavens, is, greater than he.12 But, from the days the Immerser, until even now, the kingdom of the heavens, is being invaded, and, invaders, are, seizing upon it.13 For, all the prophets and the law, until John, did prophesy;14 And, if ye are willing to accept it, he, is Elijahthe one destined to come.15 He that hath ears, let him hear!16 But, unto what, shall I liken this generation? It is, like, unto children, sitting the market-places, who, calling unto the others,17 say, We played the flute to you, and ye danced not,we sang a lament, and ye beat not the breast.18 For, John, came, neither eating nor drinking, and they sayA demon, he hath!19 The Son of Man, came, eating and drinking, and they say, Lo! a gluttonous man and a wine-drinker! a friend of, tax-collectors, and sinners! And yet wisdom hath been justified by her works.20 Then, began he to upbraid the cities, in which had been done his noblest mighty works; because they repented not:21 Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! Because, if, in Tyre and Zidon, had been done the works of power, which were done in you, of old, in sackcloth and ashes, had they repented.22 Moreover, I say unto you, For Tyre and Zidon, more tolerable, will it be, in the day of judgment, than for you.23 And, thou, Capernaum! Unto heaven, shalt thou be uplifted? Unto hades, thou shall be brought down; because, if, in Sodom, had been done the works of power, which were done in thee, it would, in that case, have remained until this day.24 Moreover, I say unto youFor the land of Sodom, more tolerable, will it be in a day of judgment, than, for thee.25 In that season, answered Jesus, and saidI openly give praise unto thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,in that thou hast hid these things from the wise and discerning, and hast revealed them unto babes;26 Yea, O Father! That, so, it hath become, a delight, before thee.27 All things, unto me, have been delivered up by my Father; and, no one, fully knoweth the Son, save the rather, neither doth any one fully know, the Father, save, the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son, may be minded, to reveal, him.28 Come unto me! all ye that toil and are burdened, and, I, will give you rest:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me,because, meek, am I and lowly, in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls;30 For, my yoke, is easy, and, my burden, light.

1 E aconteceu que, acabando Jesus de dar instruções aos seus doze discípulos, partiu dali a ensinar e a pregar nas cidades deles.

2 E João, ouvindo no cárcere falar dos feitos de Cristo, enviou dois dos seus discípulos 3 a dizer-lhe: És tu aquele que havia de vir ou esperamos outro? 4 E Jesus, respondendo, disse-lhe: Ide e anunciai a João as coisas que ouvis e vedes: 5 Os cegos veem, e os coxos andam; os leprosos são limpos, e os surdos ouvem; os mortos são ressuscitados, e aos pobres é anunciado o evangelho. 6 E bem-aventurado é aquele que se não escandalizar em mim.

7 E, partindo eles, começou Jesus a dizer às turbas a respeito de João: Que fostes ver no deserto? Uma cana agitada pelo vento? 8 Sim, que fostes ver? Um homem ricamente vestido? Os que se trajam ricamente estão nas casas dos reis. 9 Mas, então, que fostes ver? Um profeta? Sim, vos digo eu, e muito mais do que profeta; 10 porque é este de quem está escrito: Eis que diante da tua face envio o meu anjo, que preparará diante de ti o teu caminho. 11 Em verdade vos digo que, entre os que de mulher têm nascido, não apareceu alguém maior do que João Batista; mas aquele que é o menor no Reino dos céus é maior do que ele. 12 E, desde os dias de João Batista até agora, se faz violência ao Reino dos céus, e pela força se apoderam dele. 13 Porque todos os profetas e a lei profetizaram até João. 14 E, se quereis dar crédito, é este o Elias que havia de vir. 15 Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir ouça.

16 Mas a quem assemelharei esta geração? É semelhante aos meninos que se assentam nas praças, e clamam aos seus companheiros, 17 e dizem: Tocamo-vos flauta, e não dançastes; cantamo-vos lamentações, e não chorastes. 18 Porquanto veio João, não comendo, nem bebendo, e dizem: Tem demônio. 19 Veio o Filho do Homem, comendo e bebendo, e dizem: Eis aí um homem comilão e beberrão, amigo de publicanos e pecadores. Mas a sabedoria é justificada por seus filhos.

20 Então, começou ele a lançar em rosto às cidades onde se operou a maior parte dos seus prodígios o não se haverem arrependido, dizendo: 21 Ai de ti, Corazim! Ai de ti, Betsaida! Porque, se em Tiro e em Sidom fossem feitos os prodígios que em vós se fizeram, há muito que se teriam arrependido com pano de saco grosseiro e com cinza. 22 Por isso, eu vos digo que haverá menos rigor para Tiro e Sidom, no Dia do Juízo, do que para vós. 23 E tu, Cafarnaum, que te ergues até aos céus, serás abatida até aos infernos; porque, se em Sodoma tivessem sido feitos os prodígios que em ti se operaram, teria ela permanecido até hoje. 24 Porém eu vos digo que haverá menos rigor para os de Sodoma, no Dia do Juízo, do que para ti.

25 Naquele tempo, respondendo Jesus, disse: Graças te dou, ó Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, que ocultaste estas coisas aos sábios e instruídos e as revelaste aos pequeninos. 26 Sim, ó Pai, porque assim te aprouve. 27 Todas as coisas me foram entregues por meu Pai; e ninguém conhece o Filho, senão o Pai; e ninguém conhece o Pai, senão o Filho e aquele a quem o Filho o quiser revelar.

28 Vinde a mim, todos os que estais cansados e oprimidos, e eu vos aliviarei. 29 Tomai sobre vós o meu jugo, e aprendei de mim, que sou manso e humilde de coração, e encontrareis descanso para a vossa alma. 30 Porque o meu jugo é suave, e o meu fardo é leve.
