1 Then, Jesus spake unto the multitudes and unto his disciples,2 sayingUpon Moses seat, have sat down, the Scribes and the Pharisees:3 All things, therefore, whatsoever they tell you, do and observe,but, according to their works, do ye not, for they, say, and do not, perform.4 But they bind together heavy burdens, and lay upon mens shoulders, whereas, they, with their finger, are not willing to move them.5 But, all their works, they do, to be gazed at, by men,for they make broad their amulets, and make large their fringes,6 And dearly love the first couch in the chief meals, and the first seats in the synagogues,7 And the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi.8 But, ye,do not be called Rabbi,for, one, is your Teacher, and, all ye, are brethren;9 And, father, be none of you called, upon the earth, for, one, is your Father, the Heavenly;10 Neither be called leaders, for, your leader, is one, the Christ;11 And, the greatest of you, shall be to you, a minister;12 And, whoever shall exalt himself, shall be, abased, and, whoever shall abase himself, shall be, exalted,14 But alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because ye are locking up the kingdom of the heavens before men,for, ye, are not entering, neither, them who are entering, suffer ye to enter.15 Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: because ye compass sea and dry land, to make one convertand, when it is done, ye make him a son of gehenna, twofold more than ye.16 Alas for you, blind guides! that sayWhosoever shall swear by the Temple, it is, nothing, but, whosoever shall swear by the gold of the Temple, is bound:17 Foolish and blind! for which is, greater, The gold, or the Temple that hath hallowed the gold?18 And, whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is, nothing, but, whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, is bound:19 Blind! for which is greater, The gift, or the altar that halloweth the gift?20 He therefore that hath sworn by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all that is upon it;21 And, he that hath sworn by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him who dwelleth therein;22 And, he that hath sworn by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth thereupon.23 Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because ye tithe the mint and the anise and the cummin,and have dismissed the weightier matters of the lawthe justice, the mercy, and the faith; whereas, these, it was binding, to do, and, those, not to, dismiss.24 Blind guides! Straining out the gnat, but, the camel, swallowing.25 Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish,while, within, they are full of plunder and intemperance.26 Blind Pharisee! cleanse, first, the inside, of the cup and of the dish , that, the outside thereof, may become, clean.27 Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because ye make yourselves like sepulchres whitewashed, which, outside, indeed, appear, beautiful, but, within, are full, of dead mens bones and all uncleanness,28 Thus, ye also, outside, indeed, appear to men, righteous, but, within, are full, of hypocrisy and lawlessness.29 Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the righteous,30 and sayIf we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been their partners in the blood of the prophets:31 So that ye bear witness against yourselves, that ye are, sons, of them who murdered the prophets.32 And, ye, fill ye up the measure of your fathers!33 Serpents! broods of vipers! how should ye flee from the judgment of gehenna?34 For this cause, lo! I, send unto you, prophets and wise men and scribes,some from among them, ye will slay and crucify, And some from among them ye willscourge in your synagogues, and pursue from city to city:35 That there may come upon youall righteous blood poured out upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom ye murdered between the Temple and the altar.36 Verily, I say unto youAll these things, will have come, upon this generation.37 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! that slayeth the prophets, and stoneth them that have been sent unto her,how often, would I have gathered thy children, like as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings,and ye would not!38 Lo! your house is left to you;39 For I say unto youin no wise, may ye see me, henceforth, until ye say, Blessed, is he that cometh, in the name of the Lord!

1 Então, falou Jesus à multidão e aos seus discípulos, 2 dizendo: Na cadeira de Moisés, estão assentados os escribas e fariseus. 3 Observai, pois, e praticai tudo o que vos disserem; mas não procedais em conformidade com as suas obras, porque dizem e não praticam. 4 Pois atam fardos pesados e difíceis de suportar, e os põem sobre os ombros dos homens; eles, porém, nem com o dedo querem movê-los. 5 E fazem todas as obras a fim de serem vistos pelos homens, pois trazem largos filactérios, e alargam as franjas das suas vestes, 6 e amam os primeiros lugares nas ceias, e as primeiras cadeiras nas sinagogas, 7 e as saudações nas praças, e o serem chamados pelos homens: — Rabi, Rabi. 8 Vós, porém, não queirais ser chamados Rabi, porque um só é o vosso Mestre, a saber, o Cristo, e todos vós sois irmãos. 9 E a ninguém na terra chameis vosso pai, porque um só é o vosso Pai, o qual está nos céus. 10 Nem vos chameis mestres, porque um só é o vosso Mestre, que é o Cristo. 11 Porém o maior dentre vós será vosso servo. 12 E o que a si mesmo se exaltar será humilhado; e o que a si mesmo se humilhar será exaltado.

13 Mas ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que fechais aos homens o Reino dos céus; e nem vós entrais, nem deixais entrar aos que estão entrando.

14 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que devorais as casas das viúvas, sob pretexto de prolongadas orações; por isso, sofrereis mais rigoroso juízo.

15 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que percorreis o mar e a terra para fazer um prosélito; e, depois de o terdes feito, o fazeis filho do inferno duas vezes mais do que vós.

16 Ai de vós, condutores cegos! Pois que dizeis: Qualquer que jurar pelo templo, isso nada é; mas o que jurar pelo ouro do templo, esse é devedor. 17 Insensatos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: o ouro ou o templo, que santifica o ouro? 18 E aquele que jurar pelo altar, isso nada é; mas aquele que jurar pela oferta que está sobre o altar, esse é devedor. 19 Insensatos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: a oferta ou o altar, que santifica a oferta? 20 Portanto, o que jurar pelo altar jura por ele e por tudo o que sobre ele está. 21 E o que jurar pelo templo jura por ele e por aquele que nele habita. 22 E o que jurar pelo céu jura pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que está assentado nele.

23 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que dais o dízimo da hortelã, do endro e do cominho e desprezais o mais importante da lei, o juízo, a misericórdia e a fé; deveis, porém, fazer essas coisas e não omitir aquelas. 24 Condutores cegos! Coais um mosquito e engolis um camelo.

25 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que limpais o exterior do copo e do prato, mas o interior está cheio de rapina e de iniquidade. 26 Fariseu cego! Limpa primeiro o interior do copo e do prato, para que também o exterior fique limpo.

27 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que sois semelhantes aos sepulcros caiados, que por fora realmente parecem formosos, mas interiormente estão cheios de ossos de mortos e de toda imundícia. 28 Assim, também vós exteriormente pareceis justos aos homens, mas interiormente estais cheios de hipocrisia e de iniquidade.

29 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que edificais os sepulcros dos profetas e adornais os monumentos dos justos 30 e dizeis: Se existíssemos no tempo de nossos pais, nunca nos associaríamos com eles para derramar o sangue dos profetas. 31 Assim, vós mesmos testificais que sois filhos dos que mataram os profetas. 32 Enchei vós, pois, a medida de vossos pais. 33 Serpentes, raça de víboras! Como escapareis da condenação do inferno? 34 Portanto, eis que eu vos envio profetas, sábios e escribas; e a uns deles matareis e crucificareis; e a outros deles açoitareis nas vossas sinagogas e os perseguireis de cidade em cidade, 35 para que sobre vós caia todo o sangue justo, que foi derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue de Abel, o justo, até ao sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, que matastes entre o santuário e o altar. 36 Em verdade vos digo que todas essas coisas hão de vir sobre esta geração.

37 Jerusalém, Jerusalém, que matas os profetas e apedrejas os que te são enviados! Quantas vezes quis eu ajuntar os teus filhos, como a galinha ajunta os seus pintos debaixo das asas, e tu não quiseste! 38 Eis que a vossa casa vos ficará deserta. 39 Porque eu vos digo que, desde agora, me não vereis mais, até que digais: Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor!
