1 And it came to pass, when Jesus ended all these words, he said unto his disciples:2 Ye know that, after two days, the passover, taketh place,and, the Son of Man, is to be delivered up, to be crucified.3 Then, were gathered together, the High-priests and the Elders of the people, into the court of the High-priest who was called Caiaphas;4 and they took counsel together, in order that, Jesus, by guile, they might secure, and slay.5 They were saying, however: Not during the feast, lest, an uproar, arise among the people.6 But, Jesus, happening to be in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,7 there came unto him a woman, holding an alabaster-jar of costly perfume, and she poured it down upon his head, as he was reclining.8 And the disciples, seeing it, were greatly displeased, sayingTo what end, this loss?9 For this could have been sold for much, and given to the destitute.10 But Jesus, taking note, said unto themWhy vex ye the woman? for, a seemly work, hath she wrought for me;11 For, always, the destitute, have ye with you,but, me, not always, have ye;12 For, she, pouring this perfume upon my body, so as to prepare me for burial, did it.13 Verily, I say unto youWheresoever this glad-message shall be proclaimed in all the world, also what she did, will be told, as a memorial of her.14 Then, went one of the twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, unto the High-priests,15 and saidWhat are ye willing to give unto me? and, I, unto you, will deliver him up. And they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.16 And, from that time, was he seeking a favourable opportunity that he might, deliver him up.17 And, on the first of the days of unleavened bread, the disciples came unto Jesus, sayingWhere wilt thou, that we make ready for thee to eat the passover?18 And, he, saidGo your way into the city, unto such-a-one, and say to him, The teacher, saith, My season, is, near, with thee, will I keep the passover, with my disciples.19 And the disciples did, as Jesus directed them, and made ready the passover.20 And, when, evening, came, he was reclining with the twelve disciples ;21 and, as they were eating, he saidVerily, I say unto you, One from among you, will deliver me up.22 And, being exceedingly grieved, they began to be saying to him, each oneCan it be, I, Lord?23 And, he, answering, saidHe who hath dipped with me his hand in the bowl, the same, will deliver me up.24 The Son of Man, indeed, goeth his way, according as it is written concerning him,But alas! for that man, through whom the Son of Man, is being delivered up: Well, had it been for him, if, that man, had not been born!25 And Judas, who was delivering him up, answering, saidCan it be, I, Rabbi? He saith unto himThou, hast said.26 And, as they were eating, Jesus, taking a loaf and blessing, brake,and, giving to his disciples, saidTake, eat! This, is, my body.27 And, taking a cup, and giving thanks, he gave unto them, sayingDrink of it, all of you;28 For, this, is my blood of the covenant, which, for many, is to be poured out, for remission of sins.29 Moreover, I say unto youIn nowise, will I drink, henceforth, of this produce of the vine, until that day, whensoever I shall drink it with you, new, in the kingdom of my Father.30 And, having sung praise, they went forth unto the Mount of Olives.31 Then, Jesus saith unto themAll ye, will find cause of stumbling in me, during this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and, the sheep of the flock, will be scattered abroad;32 But, after my arising, I will go before you into Galilee.33 Now Peter, answering, said unto himThough, all, shall find cause of stumbling in thee, I, shall never find cause of stumbling.34 Jesus saith unto him: Verily, I say unto theeDuring this night, before a cock crow, Thrice, wilt thou deny me.35 Peter saith unto him: Even though it be needful for me, with thee to die, in nowise, will I deny thee. Likewise, all the disciples also, said.36 Then Jesus cometh with them, into a place called Gethsemane,and he saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.37 And, taking with him, Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be grieved and to be in great distress.38 Then, saith he unto them: Encompassed with grief, is my soul, unto death: Abide ye here, and be watching with me.39 And, going forward a little, he fell upon his face, offering prayer, and sayingMy Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from me,Nevertheless, not as, I, will, but as, thou, wilt.40 And he cometh unto his disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and said unto PeterThus, powerless are ye, one hour, to watch with me?41 Be watching and praying, that ye may not enter into temptation: The spirit, indeed, is, eager, but, the flesh, weak.42 Again, a second time, departing he prayed, saying: My Father! If it is impossible for this to pass, except I, drink, it, Accomplished, be, thy will.43 And coming, he, again, found them sleeping, for their eyes had become heavy.44 And, leaving them, he, again, departed, and prayed a third time, the same word, saying again.45 Then, cometh he unto the disciples, and saith unto them,Ye are sleeping what time remaineth, and taking your rest: Lo! the hour hath drawn near, and, the Son of Man, is being delivered up into the hands of sinners.46 Arise! let us be going,Lo! he that delivereth me up, hath drawn near.47 And, while, yet, he was speaking, lo! Judas, one of the twelve, came, and, with him, a large multitude, with swords and clubs, from the High-priests and Elders of the people.48 And, he who was delivering him up, gave them a sign, sayingWhomsoever I shall kiss, he, it is,secure him.49 And, straightway, coming unto Jesus, he saidJoy to thee! Rabbi, and eagerly kissed him.50 But, Jesus, said unto himFriend! wherefore art thou here? Then, coming forward, they thrust their hands upon Jesus, and secured him.51 And lo! one of those with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, grasped his sword, and smiting the servant of the High-priest, cut off his ear.52 Then, Jesus saith unto himPut back thy sword into its place, for, all they who take a sword, by a sword, shall perish.53 Or thinkest thou that I cannot call upon my Father, and he will set near me, even now, more than twelve legions of messengers?54 How then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that, thus, it must needs come to pass?55 In that hour, said Jesus unto the multitudes: As against a robber, came ye forth, with swords and clubs, to arrest me? Daily in the temple, used I to sit teaching, and ye secured me not;56 But, this, hath, wholly, come to pass, that, the Scriptures of the prophets, may be fulfilled. Then, the disciples, all forsaking him, fled.57 And, they who secured Jesus, led him away unto Caiaphas the High-priest, where the Scribes and the Elders gathered themselves together.58 Now, Peter, was following him afar off, unto the court of the High-priest,and, entering within, was sitting with the attendants, to see the end.59 Now, the High-priests and all the High-council, were seeking false-witness against Jesus, that they might, put him to death;60 and found not any, though many came forward as false-witnesses. At length, however, there came forward, two,61 and said: This, man saidI am able to pull down the shrine of God, and, in three days, to, build, it.62 And the High-priest, arising, said unto himNothing, answerest thou? What are these, against thee bearing witness?63 But, Jesus, was silent. And, the High-priest, said unto him: I put thee on oath, by the Living God, that, to us, thou sayWhether, thou, art the Christ, the Son of God.64 Jesus saith unto him: Thou, hast said; Moreover, I say unto youHereafter, ye will see the Son of Man, sitting on the right hand of power, and coming upon the clouds of heaven.65 Then, the High-priest rent asunder his garments, sayingHe hath spoken profanely! What further need have we, of witnesses? Lo! now, ye have heard the profanity!66 How, to you, doth it seem? And, they, answering, said: Guilty of death, he is.67 Then, spat they into his face, and buffeted him; and, others, struck him smartly,68 sayingProphesy unto us, O Christ! Who is he that struck thee?69 Now, Peter, was sitting without, in the court; and there came unto him a certain female servant, sayingThou also, wast with Jesus, the Galilaean.70 But, he, denied before all, sayingI know not what thou sayest.71 And, when he went out into the porch, another female saw him, and said unto them who were thereThis, one was with Jesus the Nazarene.72 And, again, he denied, with an oathI know not the man.73 And, after a little, the by-standers, coming forward, said unto Peter: Truly, thou also, art, from among them, for, thy very speech, maketh thee, manifest.74 Then, began he to be cursing and swearingI know not the man! And, straightway, a cock crowed.75 And Peter was put in mind of the declaration of Jesus, of his having saidBefore a cock crow, thrice, wilt thou utterly deny me; and, going forth outside, he wept bitterly.

1 E aconteceu que, quando Jesus concluiu todos esses discursos, disse aos seus discípulos: 2 Bem sabeis que, daqui a dois dias, é a Páscoa, e o Filho do Homem será entregue para ser crucificado.

3 Depois, os príncipes dos sacerdotes, e os escribas, e os anciãos do povo reuniram-se na sala do sumo sacerdote, o qual se chamava Caifás, 4 e consultaram-se mutuamente para prenderem Jesus com dolo e o matarem. 5 Mas diziam: Não durante a festa, para que não haja alvoroço entre o povo.

6 E, estando Jesus em Betânia, em casa de Simão, o leproso, 7 aproximou-se dele uma mulher com um vaso de alabastro, com unguento de grande valor, e derramou-lho sobre a cabeça, quando ele estava assentado à mesa. 8 E os seus discípulos, vendo isso, indignaram-se, dizendo: Por que este desperdício? 9 Pois este unguento podia vender-se por grande preço e dar-se o dinheiro aos pobres. 10 Jesus, porém, conhecendo isso, disse-lhes: Por que afligis esta mulher? Pois praticou uma boa ação para comigo. 11 Porquanto sempre tendes convosco os pobres, mas a mim não me haveis de ter sempre. 12 Ora, derramando ela este unguento sobre o meu corpo, fê-lo preparando-me para o meu sepultamento. 13 Em verdade vos digo que, onde quer que este evangelho for pregado, em todo o mundo, também será referido o que ela fez para memória sua.

14 Então, um dos doze, chamado Judas Iscariotes, foi ter com os príncipes dos sacerdotes 15 e disse: Que me quereis dar, e eu vo-lo entregarei? E eles lhe pesaram trinta moedas de prata. 16 E, desde então, buscava oportunidade para o entregar.

17 E, no primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães Asmos, chegaram os discípulos junto de Jesus, dizendo: Onde queres que preparemos a comida da Páscoa? 18 E ele disse: Ide à cidade a um certo homem e dizei-lhe: O Mestre diz: O meu tempo está próximo; em tua casa celebrarei a Páscoa com os meus discípulos. 19 E os discípulos fizeram como Jesus lhes ordenara e prepararam a Páscoa.

20 E, chegada a tarde, assentou-se à mesa com os doze. 21 E, enquanto eles comiam, disse: Em verdade vos digo que um de vós me há de trair. 22 E eles, entristecendo-se muito, começaram um por um a dizer-lhe: Porventura, sou eu, Senhor? 23 E ele, respondendo, disse: O que mete comigo a mão no prato, esse me há de trair. 24 Em verdade o Filho do Homem vai, como acerca dele está escrito, mas ai daquele homem por quem o Filho do Homem é traído! Bom seria para esse homem se não houvera nascido. 25 E, respondendo Judas, o que o traía, disse: Porventura, sou eu, Rabi? Ele disse: Tu o disseste.

26 Enquanto comiam, Jesus tomou o pão, e, abençoando-o, o partiu, e o deu aos discípulos, e disse: Tomai, comei, isto é o meu corpo. 27 E, tomando o cálice e dando graças, deu-lho, dizendo: Bebei dele todos. 28 Porque isto é o meu sangue, o sangue do Novo Testamento, que é derramado por muitos, para remissão dos pecados. 29 E digo-vos que, desde agora, não beberei deste fruto da vide até àquele Dia em que o beba de novo convosco no Reino de meu Pai. 30 E, tendo cantado um hino, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.

31 Então, Jesus lhes disse: Todos vós esta noite vos escandalizareis em mim, porque está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho se dispersarão. 32 Mas, depois de eu ressuscitar, irei adiante de vós para a Galileia. 33 Mas Pedro, respondendo, disse-lhe: Ainda que todos se escandalizem em ti, eu nunca me escandalizarei. 34 Disse-lhe Jesus: Em verdade te digo que, nesta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás. 35 Disse-lhe Pedro: Ainda que me seja necessário morrer contigo, não te negarei. E todos os discípulos disseram o mesmo.

36 Então, chegou Jesus com eles a um lugar chamado Getsêmani e disse a seus discípulos: Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto vou além orar. 37 E, levando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se muito. 38 Então, lhes disse: A minha alma está cheia de tristeza até à morte; ficai aqui e vigiai comigo. 39 E, indo um pouco adiante, prostrou-se sobre o seu rosto, orando e dizendo: Meu Pai, se é possível, passa de mim este cálice; todavia, não seja como eu quero, mas como tu queres. 40 E, voltando para os seus discípulos, achou-os adormecidos; e disse a Pedro: Então, nem uma hora pudeste vigiar comigo? 41 Vigiai e orai, para que não entreis em tentação; na verdade, o espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca. 42 E, indo segunda vez, orou, dizendo: Meu Pai, se este cálice não pode passar de mim sem eu o beber, faça-se a tua vontade. 43 E, voltando, achou-os outra vez adormecidos, porque os seus olhos estavam carregados. 44 E, deixando-os de novo, foi orar pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras. 45 Então, chegou junto dos seus discípulos e disse-lhes: Dormi, agora, e repousai; eis que é chegada a hora, e o Filho do Homem será entregue nas mãos dos pecadores. 46 Levantai-vos, partamos; eis que é chegado o que me trai.

47 E, estando ele ainda a falar, eis que chegou Judas, um dos doze, e com ele, grande multidão com espadas e porretes, vinda da parte dos príncipes dos sacerdotes e dos anciãos do povo. 48 E o traidor tinha-lhes dado um sinal, dizendo: O que eu beijar é esse; prendei-o. 49 E logo, aproximando-se de Jesus, disse: Eu te saúdo, Rabi. E beijou-o. 50 Jesus, porém, lhe disse: Amigo, a que vieste? Então, aproximando-se eles, lançaram mão de Jesus e o prenderam. 51 E eis que um dos que estavam com Jesus, estendendo a mão, puxou da espada e, ferindo o servo do sumo sacerdote, cortou-lhe uma orelha. 52 Então, Jesus disse-lhe: Mete no seu lugar a tua espada, porque todos os que lançarem mão da espada à espada morrerão. 53 Ou pensas tu que eu não poderia, agora, orar a meu Pai e que ele não me daria mais de doze legiões de anjos? 54 Como, pois, se cumpririam as Escrituras, que dizem que assim convém que aconteça? 55 Então, disse Jesus à multidão: Saístes, como para um salteador, com espadas e porretes, para me prender? Todos os dias me assentava junto de vós, ensinando no templo, e não me prendestes. 56 Mas tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumpram as Escrituras dos profetas. Então, todos os discípulos, deixando-o, fugiram.

57 E os que prenderam Jesus o conduziram à casa do sumo sacerdote Caifás, onde os escribas e os anciãos estavam reunidos. 58 E Pedro o seguiu de longe até ao pátio do sumo sacerdote e, entrando, assentou-se entre os criados, para ver o fim. 59 Ora, os príncipes dos sacerdotes, e os anciãos, e todo o conselho buscavam falso testemunho contra Jesus, para poderem dar-lhe a morte, 60 e não o achavam, apesar de se apresentarem muitas testemunhas falsas, mas, por fim, chegaram duas 61 e disseram: Este disse: Eu posso derribar o templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias. 62 E, levantando-se o sumo sacerdote, disse-lhe: Não respondes coisa alguma ao que estes depõem contra ti? 63 E Jesus, porém, guardava silêncio. E, insistindo o sumo sacerdote, disse-lhe: Conjuro-te pelo Deus vivo que nos digas se tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus. 64 Disse-lhes Jesus: Tu o disseste; digo-vos, porém, que vereis em breve o Filho do Homem assentado à direita do Todo-Poderoso e vindo sobre as nuvens do céu. 65 Então, o sumo sacerdote rasgou as suas vestes, dizendo: Blasfemou; para que precisamos ainda de testemunhas? Eis que bem ouvistes, agora, a sua blasfêmia. 66 Que vos parece? E eles, respondendo, disseram: É réu de morte. 67 Então, cuspiram-lhe no rosto e lhe davam murros, e outros o esbofeteavam, 68 dizendo: Profetiza-nos, Cristo, quem é o que te bateu?

69 Ora, Pedro estava assentado fora, no pátio; e, aproximando-se dele uma criada, disse: Tu também estavas com Jesus, o galileu. 70 Mas ele negou diante de todos, dizendo: Não sei o que dizes. 71 E, saindo para o vestíbulo, outra criada o viu e disse aos que ali estavam: Este também estava com Jesus, o Nazareno. 72 E ele negou outra vez, com juramento: Não conheço tal homem. 73 E, logo depois, aproximando-se os que ali estavam, disseram a Pedro: Verdadeiramente, também tu és deles, pois a tua fala te denuncia. 74 Então, começou ele a praguejar e a jurar, dizendo: Não conheço esse homem. E imediatamente o galo cantou. 75 E lembrou-se Pedro das palavras de Jesus, que lhe dissera: Antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás. E, saindo dali, chorou amargamente.
