1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD, like his father David,2 but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made molten images for the Ba'als;3 and he burned incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burned his sons as an offering, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel.4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.5 Therefore the LORD his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with great slaughter.6 For Pekah the son of Remali'ah slew a hundred and twenty thousand in Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.7 And Zichri, a mighty man of E'phraim, slew Ma-asei'ah the king's son and Azri'kam the commander of the palace and Elka'nah the next in authority to the king.8 The men of Israel took captive two hundred thousand of their kinsfolk, women, sons, and daughters; they also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Sama'ria.9 But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the army that came to Sama'ria, and said to them, "Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have slain them in a rage which has reached up to heaven.10 And now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, as your slaves. Have you not sins of your own against the LORD your God?11 Now hear me, and send back the captives from your kinsfolk whom you have taken, for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you."12 Certain chiefs also of the men of E'phraim, Azari'ah the son of Joha'nan, Berechi'ah the son of Meshil'lemoth, Jehizki'ah the son of Shallum, and Ama'sa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war,13 and said to them, "You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring upon us guilt against the LORD in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel."14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the assembly.15 And the men who have been mentioned by name rose and took the captives, and with the spoil they clothed all that were naked among them; they clothed them, gave them sandals, provided them with food and drink, and anointed them; and carrying all the feeble among them on asses, they brought them to their kinsfolk at Jericho, the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Sama'ria.16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the king of Assyria for help.17 For the E'domites had again invaded and defeated Judah, and carried away captives.18 And the Philistines had made raids on the cities in the Shephe'lah and the Negeb of Judah, and had taken Beth-she'mesh, Ai'jalon, Gede'roth, Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages; and they settled there.19 For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had dealt wantonly in Judah and had been faithless to the LORD.20 So Til'gath-pilne'ser king of Assyria came against him, and afflicted him instead of strengthening him.21 For Ahaz took from the house of the LORD and the house of the king and of the princes, and gave tribute to the king of Assyria; but it did not help him.22 In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the LORD--this same King Ahaz.23 For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, and said, "Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me." But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of the LORD; and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem.25 In every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, provoking to anger the LORD, the God of his fathers.26 Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezeki'ah his son reigned in his stead.

1 Acaz tinha vinte anos de idade quando se tornou rei de Judá. Ele governou dezesseis anos em Jerusalém. Acaz não seguiu o bom exemplo do seu antepassado, o rei Davi; pelo contrário, fez aquilo que não agrada ao Senhor, seu Deus, 2 e seguiu o exemplo dos reis de Israel. Fez imagens de metal do deus Baal 3 e queimou incenso no vale de Ben-Hinom. Chegou até a oferecer os seus próprios filhos, queimando-os como oferta aos ídolos, de acordo com o nojento costume dos povos que o Senhor Deus havia expulsado da terra conforme os israelitas avançavam. 4 Acaz também ofereceu sacrifícios e queimou incenso nos lugares pagãos de adoração, nos morros e debaixo de todas as árvores que dão sombra.

5 Por isso, o Senhor, o Deus de Acaz, deixou que o rei sírio o vencesse. Os sírios derrotaram o exército de Acaz e levaram muitos judeus como prisioneiros para Damasco. E Deus também deixou que Acaz sofresse uma grande derrota na guerra contra o rei de Israel. 6 Em um só dia, o rei de Israel, Peca, filho de Remalias, matou cento e vinte mil soldados valentes do exército de Acaz. Deus fez isso porque o povo de Judá havia abandonado o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados. 7 Zicri, um valente soldado de Israel, matou Maaseias, filho do rei Acaz; matou também Azricã, o chefe do palácio, e Elcana, o primeiro-ministro do rei. 8 Da terra de Judá os israelitas levaram como prisioneiros muitos dos seus patrícios, isto é, duzentas mil mulheres e crianças. Pegaram também muitos objetos de valor e os levaram consigo para a cidade de Samaria.

9 Odede, um profeta do Senhor Deus, estava em Samaria e foi encontrar-se com o exército israelita, que estava voltando para lá. Odede disse a eles:

— O Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, ficou irado com o povo de Judá e deixou que vocês o derrotassem. Mas vocês mataram aquela gente com tanta raiva, que Deus ficou sabendo disso. 10 Agora vocês estão querendo fazer com que os homens e as mulheres de Judá e de Jerusalém se tornem seus escravos. Será que vocês não sabem que vocês pecaram contra o Senhor, seu Deus? 11 Portanto, ouçam o que eu estou dizendo. Levem de volta os seus patrícios, esses prisioneiros que vocês trouxeram, pois Deus está muito irado com vocês.

12 Então quatro das altas autoridades de Israel, isto é, Azarias, filho de Joanã; Berequias, filho de Mesilemote; Jeizquias, filho de Salum; e Amasa, filho de Hadlai, também ficaram contra o que o exército israelita tinha feito. 13 Eles disseram:

— Não tragam esses prisioneiros para cá! Já pecamos muito contra Deus, o Senhor, e o que vocês estão querendo fazer agora nos tornaria ainda mais culpados diante de Deus. Ele já está muito irado com a gente!

14 Aí os soldados israelitas largaram os prisioneiros e as coisas que tinham trazido de Judá, entregando-os ao povo e às autoridades. 15 Os quatro homens já citados foram escolhidos para cuidar dos prisioneiros. Das coisas que tinham sido trazidas de Judá, eles pegaram roupas e sandálias e deram aos que precisavam. Depois deram de comer e de beber a todos eles e cuidaram dos seus ferimentos. Em seguida, levaram todos os prisioneiros de volta para a sua terra e os deixaram em Jericó, a cidade das palmeiras. Os que estavam muito fracos foram montados em jumentos.

Então os israelitas voltaram para Samaria.

16 Nessa mesma época, o rei Acaz mandou pedir socorro ao rei da Assíria 17 porque mais uma vez os edomitas tinham invadido o país de Judá e haviam derrotado o exército de Acaz e levado alguns prisioneiros. 18 Ao mesmo tempo, os filisteus estavam atacando as cidades que ficavam nas planícies e no sul de Judá, conquistando Bete-Semes, Aijalom e Gederote e também as cidades de Socó, Timna e Ginzo, com os povoados que ficavam ao redor. Tendo conquistado essas cidades, os filisteus começaram a morar nelas. 19 Deus fez o país de Judá sofrer esta humilhação por causa do rei Acaz, pois ele havia levado o povo de Judá a cometer imoralidades e ele mesmo havia desobedecido a Deus, o Senhor.

20 O rei Tiglate-Pileser, da Assíria, marchou com o seu exército contra Acaz e, em vez de ajudá-lo, o deixou numa situação mais difícil ainda. 21 Acaz pegou objetos de valor do Templo, do palácio e das casas das altas autoridades e os deu ao rei da Assíria; porém isso não adiantou nada.

22 Quando as suas dificuldades aumentaram, o rei Acaz cometeu pecados piores contra Deus, o Senhor. Acaz era assim mesmo! 23 Ofereceu sacrifícios aos deuses da Síria, mas esses mesmos deuses foram a causa da sua derrota. Ele disse:

— Os deuses da Síria ajudaram os reis sírios; portanto, vou lhes oferecer sacrifícios, e eles me ajudarão também.

Mas eles trouxeram desgraça para o rei e para todo o país. 24 Acaz pegou os objetos do Templo e os quebrou em pedaços. Fechou os portões do pátio do Templo e mandou construir altares em todas as esquinas de Jerusalém. 25 E mandou construir em todas as cidades de Judá lugares pagãos de adoração, onde se queimava incenso a deuses estrangeiros. Assim ele fez com que o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, ficasse muito irado.

26 Todas as outras coisas que o rei Acaz fez, desde o começo até o fim do seu reinado, estão escritas na História dos Reis de Judá e de Israel. 27 Acaz morreu e foi sepultado na cidade de Jerusalém, mas não nos túmulos dos reis; e o seu filho Ezequias ficou no lugar dele como rei.
