1 When Solomon had ended his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.2 And the priests could not enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD's house.3 When all the children of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the LORD upon the temple, they bowed down with their faces to the earth on the pavement, and worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, "For he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever."4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifice before the LORD.5 King Solomon offered as a sacrifice twenty-two thousand oxen and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.6 The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also, with the instruments for music to the LORD which King David had made for giving thanks to the LORD--for his steadfast love endures for ever--whenever David offered praises by their ministry; opposite them the priests sounded trumpets; and all Israel stood.7 And Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD; for there he offered the burnt offering and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar Solomon had made could not hold the burnt offering and the cereal offering and the fat.8 At that time Solomon held the feast for seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entrance of Hamath to the Brook of Egypt.9 And on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly; for they had kept the dedication of the altar seven days and the feast seven days.10 On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the goodness that the LORD had shown to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.11 Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD and the king's house; all that Solomon had planned to do in the house of the LORD and in his own house he successfully accomplished.12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: "I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.16 For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there for ever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time.17 And as for you, if you walk before me, as David your father walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances,18 then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, `There shall not fail you a man to rule Israel.'19 "But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them,20 then I will pluck you up from the land which I have given you; and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.21 And at this house, which is exalted, every one passing by will be astonished, and say, `Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?"22 Then they will say, `Because they forsook the LORD the God of their fathers who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore he has brought all this evil upon them'"

1 Quando Salomão terminou a oração, desceu fogo do céu e queimou completamente o animal oferecido em sacrifício e os outros sacrifícios que tinham sido oferecidos; e a glória do Senhor Deus encheu o Templo. 2 E, por causa dessa luz, os sacerdotes não puderam entrar no Templo. 3 Ao verem o fogo descer e a glória do Senhor encher o Templo, todos os israelitas que estavam ali no pátio se ajoelharam e encostaram o rosto no chão. Eles adoraram a Deus e o louvaram, dizendo:

"Louvem a Deus, o Senhor, porque ele é bom,

e porque o seu amor dura para sempre."

4 Então o rei e todo o povo ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor. 5 Salomão ofereceu em sacrifício vinte e dois mil bois e cento e vinte mil ovelhas. Assim o rei e o povo dedicaram o Templo ao serviço de Deus. 6 Os sacerdotes estavam nos seus lugares, e os levitas também, com os instrumentos de música sagrada que o rei Davi tinha feito para eles tocarem acompanhando o cântico "O Seu Amor É Eterno". Era assim que eles executavam os cânticos de louvor feitos por Davi. Todos os israelitas ficaram de pé enquanto os sacerdotes, que estavam em frente dos levitas, tocavam as trombetas. 7 Salomão dedicou também ao serviço de Deus a parte central do pátio que ficava em frente do Templo; ali ele apresentou as ofertas que foram completamente queimadas e a gordura dos animais que haviam sido oferecidos nas ofertas de paz. Salomão fez isso porque o altar de bronze era muito pequeno para os sacrifícios que eram completamente queimados, para as ofertas de cereais e para a gordura das ofertas de paz.

8 Depois Salomão e todo o povo de Israel comemoraram durante sete dias a festa da dedicação do altar. Estava ali uma enorme multidão, pessoas que tinham vindo do país inteiro, desde a subida de Hamate, no Norte, até a fronteira do Egito, no Sul. 9 No dia seguinte, começaram a comemorar a Festa das Barracas, que também durou uma semana. E no dia seguinte fizeram uma grande festa de encerramento. 10 No outro dia, o dia vinte e três do sétimo mês, o rei mandou o povo para casa. Todos foram embora felizes e alegres por causa de todas as coisas boas que o Senhor Deus tinha dado a Davi, a Salomão e ao seu povo de Israel.

11 Assim Salomão acabou de construir o Templo e o palácio real; todos os seus planos para a construção do Templo e do palácio deram certo. 12 Então o Senhor Deus apareceu de noite a Salomão e disse:

— Eu ouvi a sua oração e escolhi este Templo para ser o lugar onde serão oferecidos os sacrifícios. 13 Quando eu fechar o céu e não deixar que chova, ou ordenar aos gafanhotos que destruam as colheitas, ou mandar uma peste atacar o povo, 14 então, se o meu povo, que pertence somente a mim, se arrepender, abandonar os seus pecados e orar a mim, eu os ouvirei do céu, perdoarei os seus pecados e farei o país progredir de novo. 15 Escutarei com atenção as orações que forem feitas neste Templo, 16 pois é o Templo que escolhi e separei para ser o lugar onde deverei ser adorado para sempre. Eu tomarei conta dele e sempre o protegerei.

17 — E se você, Salomão, me servir fielmente, como fez Davi, o seu pai, e se obedecer às minhas leis e ordens e fizer tudo o que eu mandar, 18 então eu firmarei o seu poder como rei, cumprindo assim a aliança que fiz com Davi quando lhe disse que Israel sempre seria governado pelos descendentes dele. 19 Mas, se você e o seu povo deixarem de me seguir, se desobedecerem às leis e aos mandamentos que lhes dei e se adorarem e servirem outros deuses, 20 então eu os arrancarei da terra que lhes dei. E também abandonarei este Templo, que separei para ser o lugar onde devo ser adorado. Aí todos os povos vão desprezar e zombar do Templo, 21 que agora é tão glorioso. Todos os que passarem por perto dele ficarão chocados e perguntarão: "Por que foi que Deus fez isso com esta terra e com este Templo?" 22 E a resposta será: "Foi porque os israelitas abandonaram o Senhor, seu Deus, que tirou do Egito os antepassados deles. Eles seguiram outros deuses e os adoraram e os serviram. Foi por isso que o Senhor fez com que toda esta desgraça caísse sobre eles."
