1 "Then we turned, and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, as the LORD told me; and for many days we went about Mount Se'ir.2 Then the LORD said to me,3 `You have been going about this mountain country long enough; turn northward.4 And command the people, You are about to pass through the territory of your brethren the sons of Esau, who live in Se'ir; and they will be afraid of you. So take good heed;5 do not contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Se'ir to Esau as a possession.6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink.7 For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands; he knows your going through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.'8 So we went on, away from our brethren the sons of Esau who live in Se'ir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and E'zion-ge'ber. "And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.9 And the LORD said to me, `Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.'10 (The Emim formerly lived there, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim;11 like the Anakim they are also known as Reph'aim, but the Moabites call them Emim.12 The Horites also lived in Se'ir formerly, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and settled in their stead; as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the LORD gave to them.)13 `Now rise up, and go over the brook Zered.' So we went over the brook Zered.14 And the time from our leaving Ka'desh-bar'nea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.16 "So when all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people,17 the LORD said to me,18 `This day you are to pass over the boundary of Moab at Ar;19 and when you approach the frontier of the sons of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.'20 (That also is known as a land of Reph'aim; Reph'aim formerly lived there, but the Ammonites call them Zamzum'mim,21 a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they dispossessed them, and settled in their stead;22 as he did for the sons of Esau, who live in Se'ir, when he destroyed the Horites before them, and they dispossessed them, and settled in their stead even to this day.23 As for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caph'torim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their stead.)24 `Rise up, take your journey, and go over the valley of the Arnon; behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle.25 This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.'26 "So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Ked'emoth to Sihon the king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,27 `Let me pass through your land; I will go only by the road, I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left.28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on foot,29 as the sons of Esau who live in Se'ir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God gives to us.'30 But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as at this day.31 And the LORD said to me, `Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you; begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.'32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.33 And the LORD our God gave him over to us; and we defeated him and his sons and all his people.34 And we captured all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed every city, men, women, and children; we left none remaining;35 only the cattle we took as spoil for ourselves, with the booty of the cities which we captured.36 From Aro'er, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; the LORD our God gave all into our hands.37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God forbade us.

1 Moisés disse ao povo:

— Então continuamos a viagem pelo deserto na direção do golfo de Ácaba, conforme o Senhor Deus me havia ordenado. E por muito tempo caminhamos sem rumo pela região montanhosa de Edom. 2 Então o Senhor me disse: 3 "Já faz muito tempo que vocês andam por aí sem rumo. Agora vão na direção do norte." 4 E Deus ordenou que eu lhes dissesse: "Vocês vão passar pelo país de Edom, que é dos seus parentes , os descendentes de Esaú. Eles ficarão com medo de vocês, mas tomem cuidado 5 para não provocarem uma luta com eles. Eu não darei a vocês nem mesmo um pedacinho da terra deles, pois foi aos descendentes de Esaú que eu dei o território de Edom. 6 Vocês poderão comprar deles a comida e a água que precisarem."

7 — Lembrem que o Senhor, nosso Deus, abençoou tudo o que vocês fizeram. Ele não esqueceu vocês durante os quarenta anos em que caminharam por esse enorme deserto. Ele sempre cuidou de vocês, dando-lhes tudo o que precisavam.

8 — Assim rodeamos o país de Edom, deixando o caminho que vai de Elate e Eziom-Geber até o mar Morto e seguindo o caminho que vai até o deserto de Moabe. 9 E o Senhor Deus me disse: "Não ataque os moabitas, que são descendentes de Ló, nem entre em luta com eles. Eu dei a eles a cidade de Ar e não darei a você nenhuma parte do país deles."

10 (Antigamente uma raça numerosa de gigantes fortes, chamados emins, vivia em Ar. Eles eram tão altos como os anaquins, outra raça de gigantes. 11 Tanto os anaquins como os emins eram conhecidos como refains; mas os moabitas os chamavam de emins. 12 Naquele tempo os horeus viviam em Edom, mas os descendentes de Esaú os expulsaram dali, acabaram com eles e ficaram morando no seu território. Os descendentes de Esaú fizeram a mesma coisa que os israelitas fizeram mais tarde, quando estes tomaram posse da terra que o Senhor lhes tinha dado.)

13 — Depois atravessamos o riacho de Zerede, conforme Deus havia mandado. 14 Isso foi trinta e oito anos depois de termos saído de Cades-Barneia. Durante esses anos aconteceu aquilo que o Senhor nos tinha dito: morreram todos os homens daquela geração que tinham idade para ir à guerra. 15 O Senhor ficou contra eles e os foi matando, até que não sobrou mais nenhum deles no acampamento dos israelitas.

16 — Depois da morte de todos aqueles homens, 17 o Senhor Deus me disse: 18 "Passe hoje pela cidade de Ar, na fronteira com Moabe. 19 Quando chegar à terra dos amonitas, que são descendentes de Ló, não os ataque, nem entre em luta com eles. Eu entreguei a eles a terra de Amom e não darei a você nenhuma parte do país deles."

20 (Essa região é conhecida também como a terra dos refains, uma raça de gigantes que antigamente moravam ali; os amonitas os chamavam de zanzumins. 21 Havia muitos deles, e eram altos e fortes, como os anaquins. Deus destruiu os zanzumins, e os amonitas ocuparam a região e ficaram morando ali. 22 Deus havia feito a mesma coisa em favor dos edomitas, que são descendentes de Esaú: ele acabou com os horeus, e os edomitas ocuparam a terra deles e ali moram até hoje. 23 Os cretenses fizeram a mesma coisa: eles saíram da ilha de Creta, invadiram a terra dos avins, no litoral do mar Mediterrâneo, e foram na direção do sul até a cidade de Gaza. Os cretenses acabaram com os avins e ficaram morando nas cidades deles.)

24 — Depois que atravessamos o país de Moabe, Deus nos disse: "Continuem avançando e atravessem o rio Arnom, pois eu deixarei que vocês derrotem Seom, o rei dos amorreus, que mora na cidade de Hesbom. Lutem contra Seom e tomem posse da terra dele." 25 E Deus me disse: "De hoje em diante eu vou fazer com que todos os povos do mundo tenham medo de você. Você será famoso, e, quando ouvirem falar a seu respeito, todos ficarão tão assustados, que tremerão de medo."

26 E Moisés continuou, dizendo:

— Depois, quando estávamos no deserto de Quedemote, mandei que alguns mensageiros levassem ao rei Seom, que morava na cidade de Hesbom, um tratado de paz, com as seguintes condições: 27 "Pedimos licença para passar pelo seu país. Prometemos andar somente pela estrada, sem sair dela; 28 e também pagaremos pela comida e pela bebida que precisarmos. A única coisa que queremos é licença para passarmos pelo seu país 29 até chegarmos ao rio Jordão. Então atravessaremos o rio para entrar na terra que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos está dando. Os descendentes de Esaú, que moram em Edom, e os moabitas, que moram em Ar, já nos deram licença para passarmos pelos países deles." 30 Mas o rei Seom não deixou, pois o Senhor, nosso Deus, fez com que Seom ficasse teimoso e rebelde. Deus fez isso para que nós pudéssemos derrotar o rei Seom e conquistar a terra dele, que é nossa até hoje.

31 — Então o Senhor Deus me disse: "Veja! Eu vou deixar que você derrote Seom; ataque-o imediatamente e tome posse da terra dele." 32 Seom saiu com o seu exército para lutar contra nós na cidade de Jasa. 33 O Senhor, nosso Deus, nos deu a vitória, e nós derrotamos Seom, os seus filhos e todo o seu exército. 34 Além disso conquistamos e destruímos todas as suas cidades e matamos todos os homens, mulheres e crianças. Não escapou ninguém. 35 Mas ficamos com o gado e com os objetos de valor que encontramos nas cidades. 36 O Senhor, nosso Deus, deixou que conquistássemos todas as cidades, desde Aroer, que fica perto do vale do rio Arnom, e desde a cidade que está no vale, até a região de Gileade. Nós conquistamos todas as cidades, mesmo as que tinham muralhas altas e fortes. 37 Não invadimos a terra dos amonitas, nem as cidades que ficam nas margens do rio Jaboque, nem as que ficam na região montanhosa, nem os outros lugares que o Senhor, nosso Deus, havia proibido.
