1 "At that time the LORD said to me, `Hew two tables of stone like the first, and come up to me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood.2 And I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which you broke, and you shall put them in the ark.'3 So I made an ark of acacia wood, and hewed two tables of stone like the first, and went up the mountain with the two tables in my hand.4 And he wrote on the tables, as at the first writing, the ten commandments which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me.5 Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they are, as the LORD commanded me.6 (The people of Israel journeyed from Be-er'oth Bene-ja'akan to Mose'rah. There Aaron died, and there he was buried; and his son Elea'zar ministered as priest in his stead.7 From there they journeyed to Gud'godah, and from Gud'godah to Jot'bathah, a land with brooks of water.8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister to him and to bless in his name, to this day.9 Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God said to him.)10 "I stayed on the mountain, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights, and the LORD hearkened to me that time also; the LORD was unwilling to destroy you.11 And the LORD said to me, `Arise, go on your journey at the head of the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers to give them.'12 "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I command you this day for your good?14 Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it;15 yet the LORD set his heart in love upon your fathers and chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as at this day.16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.19 Love the sojourner therefore; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.20 You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve him and cleave to him, and by his name you shall swear.21 He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and terrible things which your eyes have seen.22 Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons; and now the LORD your God has made you as the stars of heaven for multitude.

1 Moisés disse ao povo:

— Depois disso o Senhor Deus me disse: "Corte duas placas de pedra, iguais às primeiras, e faça também uma arca de madeira. Então venha se encontrar comigo no monte, 2 e eu escreverei nas placas aquilo que escrevi naquelas que você quebrou. Depois ponha as placas na arca."

3 — Eu fiz uma arca de madeira de acácia, cortei duas placas de pedra iguais às primeiras e subi o monte, levando-as comigo. 4 Aí Deus, o Senhor, conforme havia feito antes, escreveu nelas os dez mandamentos, os mesmos que tinha dado a vocês quando falou do meio do fogo no alto do monte, naquele dia em que vocês estavam reunidos na presença dele. O Senhor me entregou as placas, 5 e eu desci do monte. Conforme ele havia ordenado, coloquei as placas na arca que eu havia feito, e elas ainda estão ali.

6 (Os israelitas partiram dos poços de Benê-Jacã e foram até Mosera. Ali Arão morreu e foi sepultado, e o seu filho Eleazar ficou no lugar dele como sacerdote. 7 Depois o povo foi para Gudgoda e dali para Jotbatá, uma região onde há muitos ribeirões. 8 Foi naquela ocasião que o Senhor Deus escolheu a tribo de Levi para que os homens dessa tribo levassem a arca da aliança, servissem como sacerdotes e abençoassem o povo em nome de Deus, o Senhor. E eles ainda continuam fazendo tudo isso. 9 Portanto, a tribo de Levi não recebeu terras em Canaã, como as outras tribos receberam. Conforme a promessa do Senhor Deus, o que essa tribo recebeu foi o direito de os homens servirem como sacerdotes de Deus.)

10 E Moisés continuou, dizendo ao povo:

— Eu fiquei no monte quarenta dias e quarenta noites, como na primeira vez. Mais uma vez o Senhor Deus atendeu o meu pedido e não acabou com vocês. 11 E mandou que eu fosse e os guiasse, para que entrassem e tomassem posse da terra que ele havia jurado dar aos nossos antepassados.

12 — Povo de Israel, escute o que o Senhor Deus exige de você. Ele quer que vocês o temam e sigam todas as suas ordens; quer que o amem e que o sirvam com todo o coração e com toda a alma. 13 Obedeçam a todas as leis de Deus que eu estou dando a vocês hoje, para o seu bem. 14 Os mais altos céus são de Deus, o Senhor; a ele pertencem a terra e tudo o que nela existe. 15 Mas o amor dele pelos antepassados de vocês foi tão grande, que de todos os povos do mundo ele escolheu vocês, e até o dia de hoje vocês são o seu povo escolhido. 16 Portanto, sejam obedientes a Deus e deixem de ser teimosos. 17 Pois o Senhor, nosso Deus, está acima de todos os deuses e autoridades. Ele é grande, poderoso e causa medo. Ele trata a todos igualmente e não aceita presentes para torcer a justiça. 18 Ele defende os direitos dos órfãos e das viúvas; ele ama os estrangeiros que vivem entre nós e lhes dá comida e roupa. 19 Amem esses estrangeiros, pois vocês foram estrangeiros no Egito. 20 Temam o Senhor, nosso Deus, e adorem somente a ele; fiquem ligados com ele e jurem somente pelo seu nome. 21 Louvem a Deus; ele é o nosso Deus. Vocês viram com os seus próprios olhos as grandes e espantosas coisas que Deus fez em favor de vocês. 22 Quando os nossos antepassados foram para o Egito, eram somente setenta pessoas; mas agora, por causa das bênçãos do Senhor, nosso Deus, vocês são tantos como as estrelas do céu.
