1 Auch euch, die ihr tot waret, durch eure Übertretungen und Sünden, 2 in welchen ihr einst wandeltet nach dem Lauf dieser Welt, nach dem Fürsten, der in der Luft herrscht, dem Geiste, der jetzt in den Kindern des Unglaubens wirkt, 3 unter welchen auch wir alle einst einhergingen in den Lüsten unsres Fleisches, indem wir den Willen des Fleisches und der Gedanken taten; und wir waren Kinder des Zorns von Natur, gleichwie die andern. 4 Gott aber, der da reich ist an Erbarmen, hat durch seine große Liebe, womit er uns liebte, 5 auch uns, die wir tot waren durch die Sünden, samt Christus lebendig gemacht (aus Gnaden seid ihr gerettet) 6 und hat uns mitauferweckt und mitversetzt in die himmlischen [Regionen] in Christus Jesus, 7 auf daß er in den darauffolgenden Zeiten den überschwenglichen Reichtum seiner Gnade erzeigte durch Güte gegen uns in Christus Jesus. 8 Denn durch die Gnade seid ihr gerettet, vermittels des Glaubens, und das nicht aus euch, Gottes Gabe ist es; 9 nicht aus Werken, damit niemand sich rühme. 10 Denn wir sind sein Werk, erschaffen in Christus Jesus zu guten Werken, welche Gott zuvor bereitet hat, daß wir darin wandeln sollen. 11 Darum gedenket daran, daß ihr, die ihr einst Heiden im Fleische waret und Unbeschnittene genannt wurdet von der sogenannten Beschneidung, die am Fleisch mit der Hand geschieht, 12 daß ihr zu jener Zeit außerhalb Christus waret, entfremdet von der Bürgerschaft Israels und fremd den Bündnissen der Verheißung und keine Hoffnung hattet und ohne Gott waret in der Welt. 13 Nun aber, in Christus Jesus, seid ihr, die ihr einst ferne waret, nahe gebracht worden durch das Blut Christi. 14 Denn er ist unser Friede, der aus beiden eins gemacht und des Zaunes Scheidewand abgebrochen hat, 15 indem er in seinem Fleische die Feindschaft (das Gesetz der Gebote in Satzungen) abtat, um so die zwei in ihm selbst zu einem neuen Menschen zu schaffen und Frieden zu stiften, 16 und um die beiden in einem Leibe durch das Kreuz mit Gott zu versöhnen, nachdem er durch dasselbe die Feindschaft getötet hatte. 17 Und er kam und verkündigte Frieden euch, den Fernen, und Frieden den Nahen; 18 denn durch ihn haben wir beide den Zutritt zum Vater in einem Geist. 19 So seid ihr nun nicht mehr Fremdlinge und Gäste, sondern Mitbürger der Heiligen und Gottes Hausgenossen, 20 auferbaut auf die Grundlage der Apostel und Propheten, während Jesus Christus selber der Eckstein ist, 21 in welchem der ganze Bau, zusammengefügt, wächst zu einem heiligen Tempel im Herrn, 22 in welchem auch ihr miterbaut werdet zu einer Behausung Gottes im Geist.
