1 I kung Darejaveshs fjärde regeringsår kom Herrens ord till Sakarja, på fjärde dagen i nionde månaden*7:1fjärde dagen i nionde månaden7 dec 518 f Kr., som är månaden Kislev.

2 Från Betel*7:2BetelLåg ca 1-2 mil norr om Jerusalem, vid utkanten av provinsen Juda. hade då Sareser och Regem-Melek med sina män blivit sända för att bönfalla inför Herren3 *Jer 52:12f. och fråga prästerna i Herren Sebaots hus och profeterna följande: "Ska jag gråta och fasta i femte månaden, som jag har gjort i många år?"

4 Då kom Herrens ord till mig. Han sade: 5 *Jes 58:3f, Jer 41:1f. "Säg till allt folket i landet och till prästerna: När ni under sjuttio år har fastat och klagat i femte och sjunde månaden,*7:5fastat och klagat i femte och sjunde månadenTemplets förstöring i femte månaden (juli-augusti, jfr 2 Kung 25:8) högtidlighålls av judarna med fasta än i dag ("Tisha b’Av"). Ståthållaren Gedalja mördades samma år den sjunde månaden (2 Kung 25:25). Männen undrar om sorgeriterna borde upphöra när templet nu återuppbyggs. är det då för mig ni har fastat? 6 Och när ni äter och dricker, är det inte då för er själva som ni äter och dricker? 7 *Jos 15:20f, Jer 17:26. Är inte detta de ord som Herren predikade genom forna tiders profeter, när Jerusalem ännu levde i lugn och ro med sina städer omkring sig och Sydlandet och Låglandet ännu var bebodda?"

8 Och Herrens ord kom till Sakarja. Han sade: 9 *Jes 1:7, Jer 7:5f, 21:12, Hos 6:6, 12:7, Mika 6:8, Sak 8:16f, Luk 6:36. Så säger Herren Sebaot:

"Döm rätta domar

och visa varandra

godhet och barmhärtighet.

10 *2 Mos 22:21f, Jer 7:6, Mika 2:1. Förtryck inte änkan

och den faderlöse,

främlingen och den fattige,

och tänk inte ut ont

mot varandra i era hjärtan."

11 *Jes 65:12, Jer 2:27, 32:33, 35:17, Hos 4:16. Men de ville inte lyssna på detta utan var upproriska och stängde sina öron så att de inte hörde. 12 *Jes 48:4, Jer 5:3, Hes 2:4, 11:19, Dan 9:11f. De gjorde sina hjärtan hårda som diamant så att de inte hörde den undervisning och de ord som Herren Sebaot genom sin Ande hade sänt genom forna tiders profeter.

Därför kom stor vrede från Herren Sebaot. 13 *Ords 1:27f, Jes 1:15, Jer 11:11, 14:12, Mika 3:4, Joh 9:31. Och liksom de inte ville höra när han ropade, vill jag inte höra när de ropar, sade Herren Sebaot. 14 *Ps 79:1f, Jer 44:2f, Hes 33:28. "Jag ska skingra dem genom en stormvind bland alla hednafolk som de inte känner." Så har nu landet blivit öde efter dem, ingen kommer eller går, för de gjorde det ljuvliga landet till en ödemark.
