1 Seis dias antes da páscoa foi Jesus a Betânia, onde estava Lázaro, a quem ele ressuscitou dentre os mortos.2 Deram-lhe aí uma ceia, e nela Marta servia, e Lázaro era um dos que estavam à mesa com ele.3 Então Maria, tomando uma libra de perfume de nardo puro, mui precioso, ungiu os pés de Jesus e enxugou-os com os seus cabelos; e a casa encheu-se do cheiro do perfume.4 Judas Iscariotes, um de seus discípulos, aquele que o havia de trair, perguntou:5 Por que não se vendeu este perfume por trezentos denários e não se deu aos pobres?6 Isto disse ele, não porque cuidasse dos pobres; mas porque era ladrão e, tendo a bolsa, subtraía o que nela se deitava.7 Respondeu Jesus: Deixai-a, a fim de que guarde isso para o dia da minha sepultura;8 porque os pobres sempre os tendes convosco, mas a mim nem sempre me tendes.9 Soube uma grande multidão dos judeus que Jesus estava ali, e foram lá não somente por causa dele, mas também para verem a Lázaro, a quem ele ressuscitara dentre os mortos.10 Mas os principais sacerdotes resolveram também tirar a vida a Lázaro,11 pois muitos judeus por causa dele se retiravam e criam em Jesus.12 No dia seguinte uma grande multidão que tinha vindo à festa, sabendo que Jesus vinha a Jerusalém,13 tomaram ramos de palmeiras e saíram ao seu encontro, clamando: Hosana! Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor! bendito o Rei de Israel!14 Jesus, tendo achado um jumentinho, montou nele, segundo está escrito:15 Não temas, filha de Sião, eis que vem o teu Rei, montado em um filho de jumenta.16 Seus discípulos a princípio não compreenderam tudo isto; mas quando Jesus foi glorificado, então se lembraram de que isto estava escrito a respeito dele, e de que assim lhe fizeram.17 A multidão que estava com ele, quando chamara a Lázaro do túmulo e o levantara dentre os mortos, dava testemunho.18 Por isso também a multidão lhe saiu ao encontro, porque souberam que ele tinha feito este milagre.19 De sorte que os fariseus disseram entre si: Vedes que nada conseguis; eis aí após ele foi todo o mundo.20 Entre os que tinham ido para adorar na festa havia alguns gregos;21 estes, pois, foram ter com Filipe, que era de Betsaida da Galiléia, e lhe fizeram este pedido: Senhor, queremos ver a Jesus.22 Filipe foi dizê-lo a André, e André e Filipe foram-no dizer a Jesus.23 Disse-lhes Jesus: É chegada a hora de ser glorificado o Filho do homem.24 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Se o grão de trigo, caindo na terra, não morrer, fica só; mas se morrer, dá muito fruto.25 Quem ama a sua vida, perdê-la-á; mas quem aborrece a sua vida neste mundo, conservá-la-á para a vida eterna.26 Se alguém me servir, siga-me, e onde eu estou, estará aquele que me serve; se alguém me servir, o Pai o honrará.27 Agora está perturbada a minha alma, e que direi? Pai, livra-me desta hora. Mas para isto foi que vim a esta hora.28 Pai, glorifica o teu nome. Veio, então, do céu esta voz: Eu já o glorifiquei, e outra vez o glorificarei.29 A multidão, pois, que ali estava e a ouvira, dizia ter havido um trovão; outros diziam que um anjo lhe falara.30 Disse Jesus: Não foi por minha causa, mas sim por vossa causa que veio esta voz.31 Agora é o juízo deste mundo; agora será expulso o príncipe deste mundo;32 e eu, quando for levantado da terra, atrairei todos a mim.33 Isto dizia, dando a entender o modo por que havia de morrer.34 Replicou o povo: Nós ouvimos da Lei que o Cristo permanece para sempre, e como dizes tu ser necessário que o Filho do homem seja levantado? quem é esse Filho do homem?35 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Ainda por um pouco a luz está entre vós. Andai enquanto tendes a luz, para que as trevas não vos apanhem; e quem anda nas trevas, não sabe para onde vai.36 Enquanto tendes a luz, crede na luz, para que vos torneis filhos da luz. Assim falou Jesus e, tendo-se retirado, escondeu-se deles.37 Embora tivesse feito tantos milagres na presença deles, não criam nele,38 para que se cumprisse a palavra proferida pelo profeta Isaías: Senhor, quem creu a nossa pregação? E a quem foi revelado o braço do Senhor?39 Não podiam crer, porque, como diz ainda Isaías:40 Cegou-lhes os olhos e endureceu-lhes o coração, Para que não vejam com os seus olhos e entendam no coração E se convertam, E eu os sare.41 Isto disse Isaías, porque viu a glória dele e dele falou.42 Contudo muitos das próprias autoridades creram nele, mas por causa dos fariseus não o confessavam, para não serem expulsos da sinagoga;43 porque prezaram mais a glória que vem dos homens, do que a glória que vem de Deus.44 Clamou Jesus, dizendo: Quem crê em mim, não crê em mim, mas naquele que me enviou;45 e quem me vê, vê aquele que me enviou.46 Eu que sou a luz, vim ao mundo, a fim de que todo o que crê em mim, não permaneça nas trevas.47 Se alguém ouvir as minhas palavras, e não as guardar, eu não o julgo; porque não vim a julgar o mundo, mas a salvar o mundo.48 Quem me despreza e não recebe as minhas palavras, tem quem o julgue; a palavra que falei, essa o julgará no último dia.49 Pois eu por mim mesmo não falei, mas o Pai que me enviou, esse mesmo me tem prescrito o que devo dizer e o que devo falar.50 Eu sei que o seu mandamento é vida eterna. Aquilo, pois, que eu falo, falo-o como o Pai mo tem dito.

1 Jesus therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life.2 And they made him a supper there: and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him.3 Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?6 Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein.7 Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.8 For the poor you have always with you; but me you have not always.9 A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.10 But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also:11 Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away, and believed in Jesus.12 And on the next day, a great multitude that was to come to the festival day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.14 And Jesus found a young ass, and sat upon it, as it is written:15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy king cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.16 These things his disciples did not know at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.17 The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him, when he called Lazarus out of the grave, and raised him from the dead.18 For which reason also the people came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this miracle.19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.20 Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day.21 These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.22 Philip cometh, and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.23 But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.24 Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,25 Itself remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.26 If any man minister to me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.27 Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour.28 Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.29 The multitude therefore that stood and heard, said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him.30 Jesus answered, and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.31 Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.33 (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)34 The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?35 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.36 Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.37 And whereas he had done so many miracles before them, they believed not in him:38 That the saying of Isaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: Lord, who hath believed our hearing? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.41 These things said Isaias, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.42 However, many of the chief men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.43 For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.44 But Jesus cried, and said: He that believeth in me, doth not believe in me, but in him that sent me.45 And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me.46 I am come a light into the world; that whosoever believeth in me, may not remain in darkness.47 And if any man hear my words, and keep them not, I do not judge him: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.48 He that despiseth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment what I should say, and what I should speak.50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. The things therefore that I speak, even as the Father said unto me, so do I speak.
