1 Antes da festa da páscoa, sabendo Jesus que era chegada a sua hora de passar deste mundo ao Pai, tendo amado os seus que estavam no mundo, amou-os até o fim.2 Durante a ceia, como o Diabo havia já posto no coração de Judas Iscariotes, filho de Simão, que traísse a Jesus,3 sabendo este que o Pai tudo pusera nas suas mãos, e que saíra de Deus e ia para Deus,4 levantou-se da mesa, tirou as suas vestes e, tomando uma toalha, cingiu-se;5 depois deitou água na bacia e começou a lavar os pés aos discípulos e a enxugar-lhos com a toalha com que estava cingido.6 Chegando a Simão Pedro, perguntou-lhe este: Senhor, tu a mim me lavas os pés?7 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: O que eu faço, tu não o sabes agora, mas entendê-lo-ás mais tarde.8 Disse-lhe Pedro: Não me lavarás os pés jamais. Replicou-lhe Jesus: Se eu não te lavar, não tens parte comigo.9 Disse-lhe Simão Pedro: Senhor, não somente os meus pés, mas também as mãos e a cabeça.10 Declarou-lhe Jesus: Aquele que já se banhou, não tem necessidade de lavar senão os pés, porém está todo limpo; e vós estais limpos, mas não todos.11 Pois ele conhecia aquele que o havia de trair; por isso disse: Não estais todos limpos.12 Depois de lhes ter lavado os pés, tomou as suas vestes e, pondo-se de novo à mesa, perguntou-lhes: Compreendeis o que vos tenho feito?13 Vós me chamais Mestre, e Senhor, e dizeis bem; porque eu o sou.14 Se eu, pois, sendo Senhor e Mestre, vos lavei os pés, também vós deveis lavar os pés uns aos outros;15 porque vos dei exemplo, a fim de que, como eu fiz, assim façais vós também.16 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo que o servo não é maior do que seu senhor, nem o enviado maior do que aquele que o enviou.17 Se sabeis estas coisas, bem-aventurados sois se as praticardes.18 Não falo de todos vós; eu conheço aqueles que escolhi, mas para que se cumpra a Escritura: Aquele que come o meu pão, levantou contra mim o seu calcanhar.19 Desde já vo-lo digo antes que suceda, para que, quando suceder, vós creiais que eu sou.20 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Quem recebe aquele que eu enviar, a mim me recebe; e quem me recebe a mim, recebe aquele que me enviou.21 Dito isto, perturbou-se Jesus em espírito e protestou: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo que um de vós me há de trair.22 Os discípulos olharam uns para os outros, sem saber a quem ele se referia.23 Estava reclinado no seio de Jesus um de seus discípulos, a quem ele amava.24 A esse fez Simão Pedro um sinal e pediu-lhe que dissesse a quem ele se referia.25 Aquele discípulo, assim reclinado, encostou-se ao peito de Jesus e perguntou-lhe: Quem é, Senhor?26 Respondeu Jesus: É aquele a quem eu der o pedaço de pão molhado. Tendo, pois, molhado o pedaço de pão, deu-o a Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes.27 Após o bocado entrou logo nele Satanás. Disse-lhe Jesus: O que fazes, faze-o depressa.28 Nenhum dos que estavam à mesa, percebeu a que fim lhe dissera isto;29 pois como Judas era quem trazia a bolsa, alguns pensavam que Jesus lhe dissera: Compra as coisas de que precisamos para a festa, ou lhe ordenara que desse alguma coisa aos pobres.30 Ele, tendo recebido o pedaço de pão, saiu imediatamente. Era noite.31 Depois de ter ele saído, disse Jesus: Agora é glorificado o Filho do homem, e Deus é glorificado nele;32 se Deus é glorificado nele, também Deus o glorificará nele mesmo, e glorificá-lo-á imediatamente.33 Filhinhos, ainda um pouco estou convosco; procurar-me-eis, e o que eu disse aos judeus: Aonde eu vou, não podeis vós ir; isto digo também a vós neste momento.34 Um novo mandamento vos dou, que vos ameis uns aos outros; assim como eu vos amei, que também vos ameis uns aos outros.35 Nisto conhecerão todos que sois meus discípulos, se tiverdes amor uns aos outros.36 Perguntou-lhe Simão Pedro: Senhor, para onde vais? Respondeu Jesus: Para onde vou, não me podes seguir agora, mas seguir-me-ás mais tarde.37 Replicou-lhe Pedro: Senhor, por que não te posso seguir agora? Por ti darei a minha vida.38 Respondeu Jesus: Darás a tua vida por mim? Em verdade, em verdade te digo que não cantará o galo, sem que três vezes me tenhas negado.

1 Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.2 And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,)3 Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God;4 He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself.5 After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.6 He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?7 Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.8 Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.9 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.10 Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.11 For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.12 Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?13 You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.14 If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.15 For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.16 Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.17 If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.19 At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.20 Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.22 The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?25 He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?26 Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.28 Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.29 For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.30 He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.31 When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.34 A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.36 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.37 Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.38 Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.
