1 Quando todos os reis dos amorreus, que estavam além do Jordão ao ocidente, e todos os reis dos cananeus, que estavam junto ao mar, ouviram como Jeová havia secado as águas do Jordão diante dos filhos de Israel, até que passamos, derreteu-se-lhes o coração, nem lhes ficou alento algum, por causa dos filhos de Israel.2 Nesse tempo disse Jeová a Josué: Faze-te canivetes de pedra e circuncida segunda vez aos filhos de Israel.3 Fez Josué para si canivetes de pedra, e circuncidou aos filhos de Israel no outeiro dos prepúcios.4 Esta é a razão por que Josué administrou a circuncisão: todo o povo que saiu do Egito, os homens, todos os homens de guerra, morreram no deserto pelo caminho.5 Porque todos os que saíram estavam circuncidados, porém todos os que nasceram no deserto pelo caminho quando saíram do Egito, não haviam sido circuncidados.6 Pois quarenta anos andaram os filhos de Israel pelo deserto, até se acabar toda a nação, a saber, todos os homens de guerra que saíram do Egito, e isto porque não obedeceram à voz de Jeová: a eles jurou Jeová que não os deixaria ver a terra que prometeu com juramento a seus pais que nos daria, uma terra que mana leite e mel.7 A seus filhos, que suscitou em lugar deles, a estes circuncidou Josué; pois estavam incircuncidados, por não o terem sido pelo caminho.8 Depois que a circuncisão havia sido administrada a toda a nação, ficaram nos seus lugares no arraial, até que sararam.9 Disse Jeová a Josué: Hoje tirei de sobre vós o opróbrio do Egito. Pelo que ficou aquele lugar sendo chamado Gilgal até o dia de hoje.10 Acamparam-se em Gilgal os filhos de Israel; e celebraram a Páscoa aos quatorze dias do mês, à tarde, na Arabá de Jericó.11 Ao outro dia comeram do produto da terra pães asmos e espigas tostadas.12 Cessou o maná no dia seguinte, depois que os filhos de Israel comeram do produto da terra, e não o tiveram mais; mas nesse ano comeram as novidades da terra de Canaã.13 Estando Josué perto de Jericó, levantou os olhos e olhou: eis que estava em pé diante dele um homem, que tinha na mão uma espada nua. Josué foi ter com ele e perguntou-lhe: És tu por nós, ou pelos nossos adversários?14 Respondeu ele: Não; mas agora estou aqui como capitão do exército de Jeová. Prostrando-se Josué com o rosto em terra adorou e perguntou-lhe: Que diz o meu senhor ao seu servo?15 Respondeu o capitão do exército de Jeová a Josué: Tira o calçado dos teus pés, porque o lugar em que estás é santo. Josué assim fez.

1 Now when all the kings of the Amorrhites, who dwelt beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of Chanaan, who possessed the places near the great sea, had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel, till they passed over, their heart failed them, and there remained no spirit in them, fearing the coming in of the children of Israel.2 At that time the Lord said to Josue: Make thee knives of stone, and circumcise the second time the children of Israel.3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the children of Israel in the hill of the foreskins.4 Now this is the cause of the second circumcision: All the people that came out of Egypt that were males, all the men fit for war, died in the desert, during the time of the long going about in the way.5 Now these were all circumcised. But the people that were born in the desert,6 Luring the forty years of the journey in the wide wilderness, were uncircumcised: till all they were consumed that had not heard the voice of the Lord, and to whom he had sworn before, that he would not shew them the land flowing with milk and honey.7 The children of these succeeded in the place of their fathers, and were circumcised by Josue: for they were uncircumcised even as they were born, and no one had circumcised them in the way.8 Now after they were all circumcised, they remained in the same place of the camp, until they were healed.9 And the Lord said to Josue: This day have I taken away from you the reproach of Egypt. And the name of that place was called Galgal, until this present day.10 And the children of Israel abode in Galgal, and they kept the phase on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho:11 And they ate on the next day unleavened bread of the corn of the land, and frumenty of the same year.12 And the manna ceased after they ate of the corn of the land, neither did the children of Israel use that food any more, but they ate of the corn of the present year of the land of Chanaan.13 And when Josue was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and saw a man standing over against him: holding a drawn sword, and he went to him, and said: Art thou one of ours, or of our adversaries?14 And he answered: No: but I am prince of the host of the Lord, and now I am come.15 Josue fell on his face to the ground. And worshipping, add: What saith my lord to his servant?16 Loose, saith he, thy shoes from off thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Josue did as was commanded him.
