1 Então se levantou um grande clamor do povo, e de suas mulheres contra os judeus, seus irmãos.2 Pois havia quem dissesse: Nós, nossos filhos e nossas filhas somos muitos; que se nos dê trigo, para que comamos e vivamos.3 Havia também alguns que diziam: Os nossos campos, as nossas vinhas e as nossas casas estão sendo hipotecados; que se nos dê trigo, por causa da fome.4 Havia também quem dissesse: Para pagarmos o tributo do rei temos tomado dinheiro emprestado sobre os nossos campos e as nossas vinhas.5 Todavia a nossa carne é como a carne de nossos irmãos, e nossos filhos como os filhos deles: eis que nós reduzimos nossos filhos e nossas filhas à escravidão, e algumas de nossas filhas já estão reduzidas à escravidão. Não está em nosso poder evitá-lo; pois outros têm os nossos campos e as nossas vinhas.6 Fiquei muito irado quando ouvi o seu clamor e estas palavras.7 Consultei comigo mesmo e contendi com os nobres e magistrados e disse-lhes: Cada um de vós é usurário para com seu irmão. Convoquei contra eles uma grande assembléia.8 Eu lhes disse: Nós, segundo nossas posses, temos resgatado os judeus, nossos irmãos, que tinham sido vendidos às nações; e quereis vós até vender os vossos irmãos, e devem eles ser vendidos a nós? Então se calaram e não acharam que me responder.9 Disse eu mais: Não é bom o que fazeis; porventura não deveis andar no temor do nosso Deus, para não sermos objeto do opróbrio dos povos nossos inimigos?10 Também eu, meus irmãos e os meus servos lhes emprestamos dinheiro e trigo à usura. Vamos, deixemo-nos disto.11 Restituí-lhes hoje mesmo os seus campos, as suas vinhas, os seus olivais e as suas casas, como também a centésima do dinheiro e do trigo, vinho e azeite, que estais exigindo deles.12 Responderam: Nós lho restituiremos e nada lhes pediremos; faremos assim como tu dizes. Chamei os sacerdotes, e fi-los jurar que fariam segundo esta promessa.13 Também sacudi os meus vestidos, e disse: Assim sacuda Deus da sua casa e do seu trabalho todo o homem que não cumprir esta promessa: Assim seja ele sacudido e despojado. Toda a congregação respondeu: Amém, e louvaram a Jeová. O povo fez conforme esta promessa.14 Além disso desde o dia em que fui designado para ser governador na terra de Judá, desde o vigésimo ano até o trigésimo segundo ano do rei Artaxerxes, isto é, doze anos, nem eu nem meus irmãos temos comido o pão devido ao governador.15 Mas os primeiros governadores que foram antes de mim, oprimiram o povo e dele tomaram pão e vinho, além de quarenta siclos de prata. Até os seus servos dominavam sobre o povo, porém eu assim não fiz, por causa do temor de Deus.16 Também eu continuei na obra deste muro, e não adquirimos terras: e todos os meus servos foram reunidos ali para a obra.17 Também se assentaram à minha mesa cento e cinqüenta homens dentre os judeus e os magistrados, além dos que vinham ter conosco dentre as nações que estavam ao redor de nós.18 Ora, o que se preparava para um só dia era um boi e seis ovelhas escolhidas; também se me preparavam aves, e de dez em dez dias provisão de toda a sorte de vinho. Todavia não obstante tudo isso não pedi o pão devido ao governador, porque a servidão pesava sobre o povo.19 Lembra-te, Deus meu, para meu bem, de tudo quanto tenho feito para este povo.

1 Now there was a great cry of the people, and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.2 And there were some that said: Our sons and our daughters are very many: Yet us take up corn for the price of them, and let us eat and live.3 And there were some that said: Let us mortgage our lands, and our vineyards, and our houses, and let us take corn be- cause of the famine.4 And others said: Let us borrow money for the king's tribute, and let us give up our fields and vineyards:5 And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren: and our children as their children. Behold we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters, and some of our daughters are bondwomen already, neither have we wherewith to redeem them, and our fields and our vineyards other men possess.6 And I was exceedingly angry when I heard their cry according to these words.7 And my heart thought with myself: and I rebuked the nobles and magistrates, and said to them: Do you every one ex- act usury of your brethren ? And I gathered together a great assembly against them,8 And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them ? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.9 And I said to them: The thing you do is not good: why walk you not in the fear of our God, that we be not exposed to the reproaches of the Gentiles our enemies?10 Both I and my brethren, and my servants, have lent money and corn to many: let us all agree not to call for it again; let us forgive the debt that is owing to us.11 Restore ye to them this day their fields, and their vineyards, and their oliveyards, and their houses: and the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which you mere wont to exact of them, give it rather for them.12 And they said: We will restore, and we will require nothing of them: and we will do as thou sayest. And I called the priests and took an oath of them, to do according to what I had said.13 Moreover I shook my lap, and said: So may God shake every man that shall not accomplish this word, out of his house, and out of his labours, thus may he be shaken out, and become empty. And all the multitude said: Amen. And they praised God. And the people did according to what was said.14 And from the day, in which the king commanded me to be governor in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my brethren did not eat the yearly allowance that was due to the governors.15 But the former governors that had been before me, were chargeable to the people, and took of them in bread, and wine, and in money every day forty sides: and their officers also oppressed the people. But I did not so for the fear of God.16 Moreover I built in the work of the wall, and I bought no land, and all my servants were gathered together to the work.17 The Jews also and the magistrates to the number of one hundred and fifty men, were at my table, besides them that came to us from among the nations that were round about us.18 And there was prepared for me day by day one ox, and six choice rams, be- sides fowls, and once in ten days I gave store of divers wines, and many other things: yet I did not require my yearly allowance as governor: for the people were very much impoverished.19 Remember me, O my God, for good according to all that I have done for this people.
