1 Ora, depois que o muro tinha sido edificado, e eu tinha assentado as portas, e foram apontados os porteiros, os cantores e os levitas.2 Entreguei a Hanani, meu irmão, e a Hananias, governador do castelo, o cargo de Jerusalém; pois ele era homem fiel, e temia a Deus mais do que muitos.3 Eu lhes disse: Não se abram as portas de Jerusalém, até que o sol faça sentir o seu calor; estando presentes os da guarda, fechem-se e tranquem-se as portas; e apontai dos habitantes de Jerusalém guardas, cada um por seu turno, e cada um diante da sua casa.4 Ora, a cidade era larga e grande; porém dentro dela era pouco o povo, e não estavam edificadas as casas.5 Meu Deus me incitou a juntar os nobres, os magistrados e o povo, para que fossem contados segundo as genealogias. Achei o livro da genealogia dos que tinham subido primeiro, e achei que nele estava escrito o que segue:6 Estes são os filhos da província, que subiram do cativeiro dos que tinham sido transportados por Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilônia, e que voltaram para Jerusalém e para Judá, cada um para a sua cidade,7 os quais vieram com Zorubabel, Jesua, Neemias, Azarias, Raamias, Naamani, Mordecai, Bilsã, Misperete, Bigvai, Neum e Baaná. Quando chegou o sétimo mês, já se achavam os filhos de Israel nas suas cidades.

1 Now after the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and numbered the porters and singing men, and Levites:2 I commanded Hanani my brother, and Hananias ruler of the house of Jerusalem, (for he seemed as a sincere man, and one that feared God above the rest,)3 And I said to them: Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened till the sun be hot. Athersatha gave into the treasure a thousand drama of gold, fifty bowls, and five hundred and thirty garments for priests.71 And some of the heads of families gave to the treasure of the work, twenty thousand drama of gold, and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver.72 And that which the rest of the people gave, was twenty thousand drama of gold, and two thousand pounds of silver, and sixty-seven garments for priests.73 And the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singing men, and the rest of the common people, and the Nathinites, and all Israel dwelt in their cities.
