1 Nesse tempo separou-se Judá de seus irmãos e uniu-se a um adulamita, que se chamava Hira.2 Viu ali a filha dum cananeu, por nome Sua; tomou-a por mulher e a conheceu.3 Ela concebeu e deu à luz um filho; e o pai chamou-lhe Er.4 Tornou a conceber e deu à luz um filho, a quem a mãe chamou Onã.5 Deu à luz mais um filho, e chamou-lhe Selá. Judá estava em Quezibe, quando ela deu à luz.6 Judá tomou para o seu primogênito Er uma mulher, a qual se chamava Tamar.7 Ora Er, o primogênito de Judá, era um homem mau aos olhos de Jeová; assim Jeová o matou.8 Disse Judá a Onã: Toma a mulher de teu irmão, cumpre para com ela o dever dum irmão de seu marido e dá sucessão a teu irmão.9 Mas Onã sabia que os filhos não havia de ser tidos por seus; assim todas as vezes que ele se unia à mulher de seu irmão, deixava cair o sêmen no chão, para que não desse sucessão a seu irmão.10 O que ele fazia era mau aos olhos de Jeová, que o matou também a ele.11 Disse Judá a Tamar, sua nora: Fica-te viúva em casa de teu pai, até que meu filho Selá venha a ser homem; porquanto disse: Para que não morra este, como seus irmãos. Assim se foi Tamar e morou em casa de seu pai.12 No correr do tempo morreu a filha de Sua, mulher de Judá; e consolado Judá, subiu a Timna para ir ter com os tosquiadores das suas ovelhas, ele e seu amigo Hira, o adulamita.13 Foi dito a Tamar: Eis que teu sogro sobe a Timna para tosquiar as suas ovelhas.14 Ela se despiu dos vestidos de sua viuvez, se cobriu com um véu, envolveu-se e se assentou à entrada de Enaim, que está no caminho que vai dar a Timna; pois viu que Selá era já homem feito, e ela não lhe fora dada por mulher.15 Vendo-a Judá, teve-a por uma prostituta; pois ela tinha coberto o rosto.16 Então se chegou a ela no caminho e disse: Vem, deixa-me estar contigo; pois não sabia que ela era sua nora. Perguntou-lhe ela: Que me darás, para estares comigo?17 Respondeu ele: Eu te enviarei um cabrito do rebanho. Perguntou ela: Dar-me-ás um penhor, até que o envies?18 Respondeu ele: Que penhor é o que te darei? Disse ela: Teu selo com a corda, e o báculo que tens na mão. Ele, pois, lhos deu, e a conheceu, e ela concebeu.19 Ela, levantando-se, se foi, tirou de si o véu, e se vestiu com os vestidos de sua viuvez.20 Enviou Judá o cabrito por intermédio de seu amigo, o adulamita, para receber o penhor da mão da mulher; porém não a encontrou.21 Então perguntou aos homens daquele lugar: Onde está a prostituta que estava em Enaim junto ao caminho? Responderam eles: Aqui não tem estado prostituta alguma.22 Tendo voltado a Judá, disse: Não a encontrei; e também os homens do lugar disseram: Aqui não tem estado prostituta alguma.23 Respondeu Judá: Que ela o guarde para si, para que não nos tornemos em opróbrio; eis que enviei este cabrito, mais tu não a encontraste.24 Passado quase três meses foi dito a Judá: Tamar, tua nora, fornicou; e eis que está pejada da fornicação. Então disse Judá: Tirai-a para fora, e seja ela queimada.25 Havendo sido tirada para fora, mandou ela dizer a seu sogro: Eu concebi do homem de quem são estas coisas; e disse mais: Reconhece de quem são estes, o selo com o cordão e o báculo.26 Reconheceu-os Judá e disse: Ela é mais justa do que eu; porquanto não a entreguei a meu filho Selá. Ele, pois, nunca mais a conheceu.27 Aconteceu que ao tempo de dar à luz, eis que havia gêmeos no seu ventre.28 Quando estava com dores de parto, um deitou fora a mão, e a parteira tomou e atou na mão dele uma fita encarnada, dizendo: Este saiu primeiro.29 Mas, recolhendo ele a mão, saiu seu irmão; e ela disse: Porque fizestes para ti uma rotura? portanto foi chamado Perez.30 Depois saiu seu irmão, em cuja a mão estava a fita encarnada; e foi chamado Zera.

1 At that time Juda went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Odollamite, named Hiras.2 And he saw there the daughter of a man of Chanaan, called Sue: and taking her to wife, he went in unto her.3 And she conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Her.4 And conceiving again, she bore a son, and called him Onan.5 She bore also a third: whom she called Sela. after whose birth, she ceased to bear any more.6 And Juda took a wife for Her his firstborn, whose name was Thamar.7 And Her, the firstborn of Juda, was wicked in the sight of the Lord: and was slain by him.8 Juda, therefore add to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother.9 He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name.10 And therefore the Lord slew him, be- cause he did a detestable thing.11 Wherefore Juda said to Thamar his daughter in law: Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Sela my son grow up: for he was afraid lest he also might die, as his brethren did. She went her way and dwelt in her father's house.12 And after many days were past, the daughter of Sue the wife of Juda died: and when he had taken comfort after his mourning, he went up to Thamnas, to the shearers of his sheep, he and Hiras the Odollamite the shepherd of his flock.13 And it was told Thamar that her father in law was come up to Thamnas to shear his sheep.14 And she put off the garments of her widowhood, and took a veil: and changing her dress, sat in the cross way, that leadeth to Thamnas: because Sela was grown up, and she had not been married to him.15 dummy verses inserted by amos16 When Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot: for she had covered her face, lest she should be known.18 He said: I will send thee a kid out of the flock. And when she said again: I will suffer what thou wilt, if thou give a pledge, till thou send what thou promisest,19 Juda said: What wilt thou have for a pledge ? She answered: Thy ring and bracelet, and the staff which thou holdest in thy hand. The woman therefore at one copulation conceived.20 And she arose and went her way: and putting off the apparel which she had taken, put on the garments of her widowhood.21 And Juda sent a kid by his shepherd, the Odollamite, that he might receive the pledge again, which he had given to the woman: but he, not finding her,22 asked the men of that place : Where is the woman that sat in the cross way? And when they all made answer: There was no harlot in this place,23 He returned to Juda, and said to him: I have not found her; moreover the men of that place said to me, that there never sat a harlot there.24 Juda said : Let her take it to herself ; surely she cannot charge us with a,lie: I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her.25 And behold after three months they told a lie, saying: Thamar, thy daughter in law hath played the harlot, and she appeareth to have a big belly. And Juda said : Bring her out that she may be burnt.26 dummy verses inserted by amos27 But when she was led to execution, she sent to her father in law, saying: By the man, to whom these things belong, I am with child. See whose ring, and bracelet, and staff this is.29 And when she was ready to be brought to bed, there appeared twins in her womb: and in the very delivery of the infants, one put forth a hand, whereon the midwife tied a scarlet thread, saying:30 This shall come forth the first.31 But he drawing back his hand, the other came forth: and the woman said: Why is the partition divided for thee? and therefore called his name Phares.32 Afterwards his brother came out, on whose hand was the scarlet thread: and she called him Zara.
