1 Foi a vida de Sara cento e vinte e sete anos: estes foram os anos da vida de Sara.2 Morrendo Sara em Quiriate-Arba, que é Hebrom, na terra de Canaã, veio Abraão para carpi-la e chorar por ela.3 Depois de se levantar de diante da sua falecida mulher, disse aos filhos de Hete:4 Peregrino e forasteiro sou entre vós. Dai-me entre vós a posse dum lugar de sepultura para que eu sepulte o meu defunto de diante da minha face.5 Responderam-lhe os filhos de Hete:6 Ouve-nos, meu senhor. Tu és príncipe de Deus entre nós: enterra na melhor de nossas sepulturas o teu defunto; nenhum de nós te vedará a sua sepultura, para enterrares o teu defunto.7 Levantou-se Abraão e fez reverência ao povo da terra, aos filhos de Hete.8 Falou com eles, dizendo: Se é do vosso agrado que eu sepulte o meu defunto de diante da minha face, ouvi-me e intercedei por mim junto a Efrom, filho de Zoar,9 para que ele me dê a cova de Macpela, que tem no fim do seu campo; que ma dê pelo preço justo para uma posse entre vós de um lugar de sepultura.10 Ora Efrom estava sentado no meio dos filhos de Hete; respondeu Efrom, o heteu a Abraão, ouvindo-o os filhos de Hete, a saber, todos os que entravam pela porta da sua cidade:11 De nenhuma sorte, meu senhor, ouve-me. O campo te dou, também te dou a cova que nele está: na presença dos filhos do meu povo te dou; sepulta o teu defunto.12 Abraão fez uma reverência diante do povo da terra.13 E disse a Efrom, aos ouvidos do povo da terra: Mas, se te agrada, ouve-me. Darei o preço do campo: toma-o de mim, e ali sepultarei o meu defunto.14 Respondeu-lhe Efrom:15 Meu senhor, ouve-me. Um terreno que vale quatrocentos siclos de prata! que é isto entre mim e ti? Sepulta ali o teu defunto.16 Abraão ouviu a Efrom; e pesou-lhe a prata, de que este tinha falado aos ouvidos dos filhos de Hete, quatrocentos siclos de prata, moeda corrente entre os mercadores.17 Assim o campo de Efrom, que estava em Macpela, em frente de Manre, o campo e a cova que nele havia e todas as árvores que no campo havia, por todos os seus limites ao redor, se confirmaram18 a Abraão como posse na presença dos filhos de Hete, a saber, de todos os que entravam pela porta da sua cidade.19 Depois sepultou Abraão a Sara, sua mulher, na cova do campo de Macpela em frente de Manre (esta é Hebrom), na terra de Canaã.20 Assim o campo, e a cova que nele estava, foram confirmados a Abraão pelos filhos de Hete para posse de um lugar de sepultura.

1 And Sara lived a hundred and twenty-seven years.2 And she died in the city of Arbee which is Hebron, in the land of Chanaan: and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her.3 And after he rose up from the funeral obsequies, he spoke to the children of Heth, saying:4 I am a stranger and sojourner among you: give me the right of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead.5 The children of Heth answered, saying:6 My Lord, hear us, thou art a prince of God among us: bury thy dead in our principle sepulchers: and no man shall have power to hinder thee from burying thy dead in his sepulcher.7 Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, to wit the children of Heth:8 And said to them: If it please your soul that I should bury my dead, hear me, and intercede for me to Ephron the son of Seor.9 That he may give me the double cave, which he hath in the end of his field: for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me before you, for a possession of a buryingplace.10 Now Ephron dwelt in the midst of the children of Heth. And Ephron made answer to Abraham in the hearing of all that went in at the gate of the city, saying:11 Let it not be so, my lord, but do thou rather hearken to what I say: The field I deliver to thee, and the cave that is therein, in the presence of the children of my people, bury thy dead.12 Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,13 And he spoke to Ephron, in the presence of the people: I beseech thee to hear me: I will give money for the field: take it, and so I will bury my dead in it.14 And Ephron answered:15 My lord, hear me. The ground which thou desirest, is worth four hundred sicles of silver: this is the price between me and thee: but what is this? bury thy dead.16 And when Abraham had heard this, he weighed out the money that Ephron had asked, in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred sicles of silver of common current money.17 And the field that before was Ephron's, wherein was the double cave, looking towards Mambre, both it and the cave, and all the trees thereof in all its limits round about,18 Was made sure to Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the children of Heth, and of all that went in at the gate of his city.19 And so Abraham buried Sara his wife, in a double cave of the field, that looked towards Mambre, this is Hebron in the land of Chanaan.20 And the field was made sure to Abraham, and the cave that was in it, for a possession to bury in, by the children of Heth.
