1 Isaque, pois, chamou a Jacó, deu-lhe a sua bênção, e ordenou-lhe, dizendo: Não tomarás mulher dentre as filhas de Canaã.2 Levanta-te, vai a Padã-Arã, a casa de Betuel, pai de tua mãe; e toma de lá uma mulher das filhas de Labão, irmão de tua mãe.3 Deus Todo-poderoso te abençoe, te faça frutificar e te multiplique, para que venhas a ser uma multidão de povos;4 e te dê a bênção de Abraão, a ti, e à tua posteridade contigo, para que herdes a terra das tuas peregrinações, que Deus deu a Abraão.5 Despediu Isaque a Jacó, que foi a Padã-Arã, à casa de Labão, filho de Betuel, o arameu, irmão de Rebeca, mãe de Jacó e de Esaú.6 Vendo que Isaque tinha abençoado a Jacó e o tinha enviado a Padã-Arã, para tomar de lá mulher para si; vendo que, abençoando-o, lhe havia ordenado: Não tomarás mulher dentre as filhas de Canaã,7 e que Jacó, obedecendo a seu pai e a sua mãe, fora a Padã-Arã:8 vendo também que as filhas de Canaã eram más aos olhos de Isaque, seu pai;9 Esaú foi à casa de Ismael e, além das mulheres que já tinha, tomou por mulher a Maalate, filha de Ismael, filho de Abraão, irmã de Nebaiote.10 Jacó partiu de Berseba e foi para Harã.11 Tendo chegado a um certo lugar, ali passou a noite, porque o sol já se havia posto; tomando uma das pedras do lugar e pondo-a debaixo de sua cabeça, deitou-se naquele lugar para dormir.12 Sonhou, e eis posta sobre a terra uma escada, cujo topo chegava ao céu; os anjos de Deus subiam e desciam por ela.13 Perto dele estava Jeová, que disse: Eu sou Jeová, Deus de teu pai Abraão, e Deus de Isaque. A terra em que estás deitado ta darei a ti e à tua posteridade;14 a tua posteridade será como o pó da terra, e te dilatarás para o Ocidente, e para o Oriente, para o Norte e para o Sul. Por ti e por tua descendência serão benditas todas as famílias da terra.15 Eis que estou contigo e te guardarei por onde quer que fores e te reconduzirei para esta terra; porque não te abandonarei até ter eu cumprido aquilo de que te hei falado.16 Despertado Jacó do seu sono, disse: Na verdade Jeová está neste lugar; e eu não o sabia.17 E, temendo, disse: Quão terrível é este lugar! este não é outro lugar senão a casa de Deus, é também a porta do céu.18 Tendo-se Jacó levantado cedo de manhã, tomou a pedra que pusera debaixo de cabeça, po-la por coluna e sobre o topo dela derramou azeite.19 Chamou àquele lugar Betel; porém o nome da cidade antes era Luz.20 Fez também Jacó um voto, dizendo: Se Deus for comigo e me guardar neste caminho que eu vou seguindo, e me der pão para comer e vestidos para me cobrir,21 de maneira que eu volte em paz à casa de meu pai, e Jeová for meu Deus,22 então essa pedra, que tenho posto por coluna, será a casa de Deus; e de tudo quanto me deres certamente te darei o dízimo.

1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, saying: Take not a wife of the stock of Chanaan:2 But go, and take a journey to Mesopotamia of Syria, to the house of Bathuel thy mother's father, and take thee a wife thence of the daughters of Laban thy uncle.3 And God almighty bless thee, and make thee to increase, and multiply thee: that thou mayst be a multitude of people.4 And give the blessings of Abrabam to thee, and to thy seed after thee: that thou mayst possess the land of thy sojournment, which he promised to thy grandfather.5 And when Isaac had sent him away, he took his journey and went to Mesopotamia of Syria to Laban the son of Bathuel the Syrian, brother to Rebecca his mother.6 And Esau seeing that his father had blessed Jacob, and had sent him into Mesopotamia of Syria, to marry a wife thence; and that after the blessing he had charged him, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Chanaan:7 And that Jacob obeying his parents was gone into Syria:8 Experiencing also that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan:9 He went to Ismael, and took to wife, besides them he had before, Maheleth the daughter of Ismael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nabajoth.10 But Jacob being departed from Bersabee, went on to Haran.11 And when he was come to a certain place, and would rest in it after sunset, he took of the stones that lay there, and putting under his head, slept in the same place.12 And he saw in his sleep a ladder standing upon the earth, and the top thereof touching heaven: the angels also of God ascending and descending by it;13 And the Lord leaning upon the ladder, saying to him: I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land, wherein thou sleepest, I will give to thee and to thy seed.14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth: thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and IN THEE and thy seed all the tribes of the earth SHALL BE BLESSED.15 And I will be thy keeper whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back into this land: neither will I leave thee, till I shall have accomplished all that I have said.16 And when Jacob awaked out of sleep, he said: Indeed the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.17 And trembling he said: How terrible is this place! this is no other but the house of God, and the gate of heaven.18 And Jacob, arising in the morning, took the stone, which he had laid under his head, and set it up for a title, pouring oil upon the top of it.19 And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza.20 And he made a vow, saying: If God shall be with me, and shall keep me in the way by which I walk, and shall give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,21 And I shall return prosperously to my father's house: the Lord shall be my God:22 And this stone, which I have set up for a title, shall called the house of God: and of all things that thou shalt give to me, I will offer tithes to thee.
