1 Os apóstolos e os irmãos que estavam na Judéia, souberam que também os gentios haviam recebido a palavra de Deus.2 Quando Pedro subiu a Jerusalém, disputavam com ele os que eram da circuncisão, dizendo:3 Entraste em casa de homens incircuncisos, e comeste com eles.4 Mas Pedro, começando a falar, lhes fez uma exposição por ordem, dizendo:5 Eu estava na cidade de Jope orando, e em êxtase tive uma visão em que via descer um objeto, como se fora uma grande toalha que era baixada do céu pelas quatro pontas, e chegar até perto de mim;6 olhando-a atentamente, eu notava, e vi quadrúpedes da terra, feras, répteis e aves do céu.7 Ouvi também uma voz que me dizia: Levanta-te, Pedro; mata e come.8 Mas eu respondi: De nenhum modo, Senhor, porque nunca entrou na minha boca coisa impura ou imunda.9 Segunda vez falou a voz do céu: Ao que Deus purificou, não faças tu impuro.10 Isto sucedeu por três vezes, e tudo tornou a recolher-se ao céu.11 Logo três homens, enviados a mim de Cesaréia, pararam em frente à casa onde estávamos.12 O Espírito disse-me que eu fosse sem escrúpulo com eles. Foram comigo também estes seis irmãos e entramos na casa daquele homem.13 Ele nos referiu como vira o anjo em pé em sua casa, e que lhe dissera: Envia a Jope e chama a Simão, que tem por sobrenome Pedro,14 o qual te anunciará as coisas pelas quais serás salvo, tu e toda a tua casa.15 Começando eu a falar, desceu o Espírito Santo sobre eles como no princípio descera também sobre nós.16 Lembrei-me da palavra do Senhor, como disse: João, na verdade, batizou com água, mas vós sereis batizados com o Espírito Santo.17 Pois se Deus lhes deu o mesmo dom que dera também a nós, quando cremos no Senhor Jesus Cristo, quem era eu para que pudesse resistir a Deus?18 Eles, depois de ouvir estas palavras, se apaziguaram, e glorificaram a Deus, dizendo: Assim, pois, Deus também aos gentios deu o arrependimento para a vida.19 Aqueles, pois, que foram dispersos pela tribulação que houve por causa de Estêvão, passaram até Fenícia, Chipre e Antioquia, não anunciando a ninguém a palavra, senão somente aos judeus.20 Mas alguns deles que eram de Chipre e de Cirene, quando foram a Antioquia, falavam também aos gregos, pregando-lhes o Senhor Jesus.21 A mão do Senhor era com eles, e um grande número dos que creram, converteu-se ao Senhor.22 A igreja em Jerusalém, tendo notícia disto, enviou Barnabé a Antioquia;23 o qual, quando chegou e viu a graça de Deus, se alegrou, e exortava a todos a perseverar no Senhor com firmeza de coração;24 porque era homem bom e cheio do Espírito Santo e de fé. Muita gente uniu-se ao Senhor.25 Barnabé partiu para Tarso em busca de Saulo26 e, tendo-o achado, levou-o a Antioquia. Durante um ano inteiro reuniram-se com a igreja, e instruíram muita gente; e em Antioquia os discípulos pela primeira vez foram chamados cristãos.27 Naqueles dias desceram alguns profetas de Jerusalém a Antioquia;28 e levantando-se um deles, chamado Ágabo, dava a entender pelo Espírito que haveria uma grande fome por todo o mundo; e ela sucedeu no reinado de Cláudio.29 Os discípulos, cada um conforme as suas posses, resolveram enviar socorro aos irmãos que moravam na Judéia;30 o que fizeram, enviando-o aos presbíteros por mão de Barnabé e de Saulo.

1 Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God.2 But when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who emphasized circumcision disagreed with him.3 They said, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them!"4 Then Peter began to explain to them point by point what had happened. He said,5 "I was in the town of Joppa praying when in a trance I saw a vision: Something like a large linen sheet was coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners, and it came right down to me.6 When I examined it closely, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the air.7 I also heard a voice telling me,‘Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it.’8 But I replied, ‘Absolutely not, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth!’9 Then the voice from heaven answered a second time,‘You must stop calling common what God has made clean!’10 This happened three times. Then everything was pulled up to heaven again.11 "At that very moment three men arrived at the house where we were staying. They had been sent to me from Caesarea.12 The Spirit told me to go with them and not to treat them differently. These six brothers went with me, too, and we went into the man's house.13 Then he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his home and saying, ‘Send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter.14 He will speak words to you by which you and your entire home will be saved.’15 "When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he had on us at the beginning.16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord—how he had said,‘John baptized withwater, but you will be baptized withthe Holy Spirit.’17 Now if God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to try to stop God?"18 When they heard this, they quieted down, and praised God, saying, "So God has given even the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."19 Now the people who were scattered by the persecution that started because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.20 But among them were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene who came to Antioch and began talking to the Hellenistic Jews too, proclaiming the Lord Jesus.21 The hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number of people believed and turned to the Lord.22 News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and so they sent Barnabas all the way to Antioch.23 When he arrived, he rejoiced to see what the grace of God had done, and with a hearty determination he continuously encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord.24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. And so a large crowd was brought to the Lord.25 Then Barnabas left for Tarsus to look for Saul.26 When he found him, he brought him to Antioch, and for a whole year they were guests of the church and taught a large crowd. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.27 At that time some prophets from Jerusalem came down to Antioch.28 One of them named Agabus got up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world. This happened during the reign of Claudius.29 So every one of the disciples decided, as he was able, to send a contribution to the brothers living in Judea.30 They did this by sending Barnabas and Saul to the elders.
