1 Tendo passado por Anfípolis e Apolônia, chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga de judeus.2 Paulo, segundo o seu costume, ali entrou, e por três sábados discutiu com eles, tirando argumentos das Escrituras,3 expondo e demonstrando ser necessário que o Cristo padecesse e ressurgisse dentre os mortos. Este Jesus, que eu vos anuncio, dizia ele, é o Cristo.4 Alguns deles ficaram persuadidos, e se associaram com Paulo e Silas, bem como uma grande multidão de gregos devotos e não poucas mulheres de qualidade.5 Porém os judeus, movidos de inveja, tomando consigo alguns homens maus dentre o vulgacho e, ajuntando a turba, amotinaram a cidade e, assaltando a casa de Jasom, procuravam-nos para os entregar ao povo.6 Porém não os achando, levaram a Jasom e alguns irmãos à presença das autoridades da cidade, clamando: Estes que têm transtornado o mundo, chegaram também aqui,7 aos quais Jasom recolheu. Todos eles vão de encontro aos decretos de César, dizendo haver outro rei que é Jesus.8 Ao ouvirem isto, ficaram perturbadas a multidão e as autoridades da cidade9 e, tendo Jasom e os mais prestado fiança, foram soltos.10 Logo pela noite os irmãos enviaram a Paulo e Silas para Beréia, e tendo eles aí chegado, foram à sinagoga dos judeus.11 Ora estes eram mais nobres do que os de Tessalônica, porque receberam a palavra com toda a avidez, indagando diariamente nas Escrituras se estas coisas eram assim.12 Muitos deles creram, bem como não poucas mulheres gregas de boa posição, e homens.13 Quando os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que também em Beréia era anunciada por Paulo a palavra de Deus, foram lá excitar e perturbar o povo.14 Então os irmãos fizeram logo sair a Paulo para que fosse até o mar. Porém Silas e Timóteo ficaram ali.15 Os que conduziam a Paulo, levaram-no até Atenas e, tendo eles recebido ordem para comunicar a Silas e Timóteo que fossem ter com ele o mais depressa possível, partiram.16 Enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito revoltava-se dentro de si mesmo, vendo a cidade cheia de ídolos.17 Assim na sinagoga discutia ele com os judeus e com os que temiam a Deus, e na praça todos os dias discutia com os que ali se achavam.18 Mas alguns filósofos epicureus e estóicos, contendiam com ele, e uns diziam: Que quererá dizer este paroleiro? e outros: Parece ser proclamador de deuses estranhos; pois pregava a Jesus e a ressurreição.19 Segurando-o, levaram-no ao Areópago, dizendo: Podemos saber que nova doutrina é essa que anuncias?20 Pois tu nos trazes aos ouvidos coisas estranhas; queremos saber que vem a ser isto.21 Ora todos os atenienses e os estrangeiros que ali moravam, não se ocupavam em outra coisa senão em contar ou em ouvir alguma novidade.22 Paulo, posto em pé no meio do Areópago, disse: Atenienses, em tudo vos vejo muitíssimo tementes aos deuses.23 Pois, passando e observando os objetos do vosso culto, achei um altar, em que estava escrito: AO DEUS DESCONHECIDO. O que, pois, adorais sem o conhecer, é o que eu vos anuncio.24 O Deus que fez o mundo e tudo o que nele há, sendo ele o Senhor do céu e da terra, não habita em santuários feitos por mãos dos homens,25 nem é servido por mãos humanas, como se necessitasse de alguma coisa, visto ele mesmo dar a todos vida, respiração e todas as coisas;26 e de um só fez todo o gênero humano para habitar sobre toda a face da terra, havendo fixado os seus tempos determinados e os limites da sua habitação;27 para buscarem a Deus, se, porventura, apalpando, o achassem, ainda que não esteja longe de cada um de nós.28 Pois nele vivemos, e nos movemos, e existimos, como até alguns dos vossos poetas o têm dito: Porque dele também somos geração.29 Sendo, pois, geração de Deus, não devemos pensar que a divindade é semelhante ao ouro ou à prata ou à pedra, lavrada por arte e gênio do homem.30 Dissimulando, pois, os tempos da ignorância, Deus manda agora que todos os homens em todo o lugar se arrependam,31 porquanto tem fixado um dia em que há de julgar o mundo com justiça pelo varão que para isto destinou, do que tem dado certeza a todos, ressuscitando-o dentre os mortos.32 Mas quando ouviram falar da ressurreição dos mortos, uns zombavam, e outros diziam: Sobre isso te ouviremos ainda outra vez.33 Assim Paulo saiu do meio deles.34 Porém alguns homens agregaram-se a ele e creram; entre os quais Dionísio o Areopagita, e uma mulher chamada Damaris, e com eles outros.

1 They traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.2 As usual, Paul went in and on three Sabbaths discussed the Scriptures with them.3 He explained and showed them that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. He said, "This very Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ."4 Some of them were persuaded to join Paul and Silas, especially a large crowd of devout Greeks and the wives of many prominent men.5 But the Jews became jealous, and they took some contemptible characters who used to hang out in the public square, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. They attacked Jason's home and searched it for Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the people.6 When they didn't find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials and shouted, "These fellows who have turned the world upside down have come here, too,7 and Jason has welcomed them as his guests. All of them oppose the emperor's decrees by saying that there is another king—Jesus!"8 The crowd and the city officials were upset when they heard this,9 but after they had gotten a bond from Jason and the others they let them go.10 That night the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.11 These people were more receptive than those in Thessalonica. They were very willing to receive the message, and every day they carefully examined the Scriptures to see if those things were so.12 Many of them believed, including a large number of prominent Greek women and men.13 But when the Jews in Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul also in Berea, they went there to upset and incite the crowds.14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paul away to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed there.15 The men who escorted Paul took him all the way to Athens and, after receiving instructions to have Silas and Timothy join him as soon as possible, they left.16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred to its depths to see the city full of idols.17 So he began holding discussions in the synagogue with the Jews and other worshipers, as well as every day in the public square with anyone who happened to be there.18 Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some asked, "What is this blabbermouth trying to say?" while others said, "He seems to be preaching about foreign gods." This was because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.19 Then they took him, brought him before the Areopagus, and asked, "May we know what this new teaching of yours is?20 It sounds rather strange to our ears, and we would like to know what it means."21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there used to spend their time in nothing else than repeating or listening to the latest ideas.22 So Paul stood up in front of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in every way.23 For as I was walking around and looking closely at the objects you worship, I even found an altar with this written on it: ‘To an unknown god.’ So I am telling you about the unknown object you worship.24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn't live in shrines made by human hands,25 and he isn't served by hands as if he needed anything. He himself gives everyone life, breath, and everything.26 From one man he made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth, fixing the seasons of the year and the boundaries they live in,27 so that they might look for God, somehow reach for him, and find him. Of course, he is never far from any one of us.28 For we live, move, and exist because of him, as some of your own poets have said: ‘For we are his children, too.’29 So if we are God's children, we shouldn't think that the divine being is like gold, silver, or stone, or is an image carved by human imagination and skill.30 Though God has overlooked those times of ignorance, he now commands everyone everywhere to repent,31 for he has set a day when he is going to judge the world with justice through a man he has appointed, and he has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead."32 When they heard about a resurrection of the dead, some began joking about it, while others said, "We will hear you again about this."33 And so Paul left the meeting.34 Some men joined him and became believers. With them were Dionysius, who was a member of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and some others along with them.
