1 Estava Jesus orando em certo lugar e, quando acabou, disse-lhe um de seus discípulos: Senhor, ensina-nos a orar, como João ensinou a seus discípulos.2 Ele lhes respondeu: Quando orardes, dizei: Pai, santificado seja o teu nome; venha o teu reino;3 o pão nosso de cada dia dá-nos diariamente;4 e perdoa-nos os nossos pecados, porque nós também perdoamos a todo aquele que nos deve; e não nos deixes cair em tentação.5 Disse-lhe mais: Se um de vós tiver um amigo e for procurá-lo à meia-noite e lhe disser: Amigo, empresta-me três pães,6 porque um amigo meu acaba de chegar à minha casa de uma viagem, e nada tenho para lhe oferecer;7 e se do interior o outro lhe responder: Não me incomodes; a porta já está fechada, eu e meus filhos estamos deitados; não posso levantar-me para tos dar.8 Digo-vos: Embora não se levante para lhos dar por ser seu amigo, ao menos por causa da sua importunação se levantará e lhe dará quantos pães precisar.9 Eu vos digo: Pedi, e dar-se-vos-á; buscai, e achareis; batei, e abrir-se-vos-á.10 Pois todo o que pede, recebe; o que busca, acha; e ao que bate, abrir-se-lhe-á.11 Qual de vós é o pai que, se o filho pedir peixe, lhe dará em vez de peixe uma serpente?12 Ou se pedir um ovo, lhe dará um escorpião?13 Se vós, sendo maus, sabeis dar boas dádivas a vossos filhos, quanto mais vosso Pai celestial dará o Espírito Santo aos que lho pedirem.14 Estava Jesus expelindo um demônio, e era este mudo. Tendo saído o demônio, falou o mudo, e maravilhou-se a multidão.15 Mas alguns deles disseram: É por Belzebu, príncipe dos demônios, que ele expele os demônios;16 outros, para o experimentarem, lhe pediam um sinal do céu.17 Ele, porém, conhecendo-lhes os pensamentos, disse: Todo o reino dividido contra si mesmo será desolado, e cairá uma casa sobre outra.18 Também se Satanás está dividido contra si mesmo, como subsistirá o seu reino? pois dizeis que eu expulso os demônios por Belzebu.19 Se eu expulso os demônios por Belzebu, por quem os expelem vossos filhos? Por isso eles mesmos serão os vossos juízes.20 Mas se pelo dedo de Deus eu expulso os demônios, logo é chegado a vós o reino de Deus.21 Quando o homem valente, bem armado, guardar a sua casa, os seus bens estão seguros;22 Mas quando sobrevier outro mais valente do que ele e o vencer, tira-lhe toda a armadura em que confiava, e reparte os seus despojos.23 Quem não é por mim, é contra mim; e quem comigo não ajunta, espalha.24 Quando o espírito imundo tiver saído do homem, anda por lugares áridos, procurando repouso; e não o achando, diz: Voltarei para minha casa donde saí;25 e ao chegar, acha-a varrida e adornada.26 Depois vai, e leva consigo mais sete espíritos piores do que ele, e ali entram e habitam; o último estado daquele homem fica sendo pior do que o primeiro.27 Enquanto assim falava, uma mulher, do meio da multidão, levantou a voz e disse-lhe: Bem-aventurado o ventre que te trouxe, e os peitos a que foste criado.28 Mas ele respondeu: Antes bem-aventurados aqueles que ouvem a palavra de Deus e a observam.29 Como afluíssem as multidões, começou a dizer: Esta é uma geração perversa; pede um sinal e nenhum sinal se lhe dará, senão o de Jonas.30 Pois assim como Jonas foi um sinal para os ninivitas, assim também o Filho do homem o será para esta geração.31 A rainha do sul se levantará no juízo juntamente com os homens desta geração, e os condenará; pois veio dos confins da terra para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão; e aqui está quem é maior do que Salomão.32 Os ninivitas se levantarão no juízo juntamente com esta geração, e a condenarão; porque se arrependeram com a pregação de Jonas; e aqui está quem é maior do que Jonas.33 Ninguém, depois de acender uma candeia, a põe em um lugar escondido nem debaixo do módio, mas sobre o velador, a fim de que os que entram, vejam a luz.34 A candeia do corpo são os teus olhos. Quando estes forem simples, todo o teu corpo é luminoso; mas quando forem maus, todo o teu corpo fica às escuras.35 Vê, então, se a luz que há em ti, não são trevas.36 Pois se todo o teu corpo for luminoso, sem ter parte alguma em trevas, será inteiramente luminoso, como quando uma candeia te alumiar com a sua luz.37 Tendo acabado de falar, um fariseu convidou-o para almoçar com ele; e Jesus havendo entrado, pôs-se à mesa.38 Vendo isto o fariseu, estranhou não se ter ele lavado antes de almoçar.39 O Senhor, porém, disse-lhe: Agora vós os fariseus limpais o exterior do copo e do prato, mas o vosso interior está cheio de rapina e maldade.40 Insensatos, porventura quem fez o exterior, não fez também o interior?41 Dai, porém, em esmolas o que está no copo e no prato, e eis que todas as coisas vos são limpas.42 Mas ai de vós, fariseus! porque dais o dízimo da hortelã, da arruda e de todas as hortaliças, e desprezais a justiça e o amor de Deus; estas coisas, porém, devíeis fazer sem omitirdes aquelas.43 Ai de vós, fariseus! porque gostais das primeiras cadeiras nas sinagogas, e das saudações nas ruas.44 Ai de vós! porque sois semelhantes aos túmulos que não aparecem, sobre os quais andam os homens sem o saberem.45 Então lhe disse um dos doutores da lei: Mestre, falando tu assim, a nós também nos insultas.46 Respondeu Jesus: Ai de vós também, doutores da lei! porque carregais os homens com fardos difíceis de suportar, e vós nem com um dedo vosso os tocais.47 Ai de vós! porque erigis os túmulos dos profetas que vossos pais mataram.48 Assim dais testemunho e consentis nas obras de vossos pais, porque eles os mataram, e vós lhes erigis os túmulos.49 Por isso também disse a sabedoria de Deus: Enviar-lhes-ei profetas e apóstolos, e a alguns deles matarão e a outros perseguirão,50 para que a esta geração se peça contas do sangue de todos os profetas, derramado desde a fundação do mundo,51 desde o sangue de Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, que foi morto entre o altar e o santuário; sim, eu vos digo que se pedirá contas a esta geração.52 Ai de vós, doutores da lei! porque tirastes a chave da ciência: vós mesmos não entrastes, e impedistes aos que entravam.53 Ao sair ele dali, os escribas e fariseus começaram a apertá-lo fortemente e a importuná-lo com perguntas sobre muitos assuntos,54 armando-lhe ciladas a fim de o apanhar em algumas das suas respostas.

1 Once Jesus was praying in a certain place. After he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples."2 So he told them,"Whenever you pray you are to say,‘Father,may your name be kept holy.May your kingdom come.3 Keep giving us every day our daily bread,4 and forgive us our sins, as we forgive everyone who sins against us.And never bring us into temptation.’"5 Then he said to them,"Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread.6 A friend of mine on a trip has dropped in on me, and I don't have anything to serve him.’7 Suppose he answers from inside, ‘Stop bothering me! The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything!’8 I tell you, even though he doesn't want to get up and give him anything because he is his friend, he will get up and give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.9 So I say to you: Keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the doorwill be opened for you.10 For everyone who keeps asking will receive, and the person who keeps searching will find, and the person who keeps knocking will have the dooropened.11 "What father among you, if his son asks for bread, would give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish,would give him a snake instead of the fish?12 Or if he asks for an egg, would he give him a scorpion?13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who keep asking him!"14 Jesus was driving a demon out of a man who was unable to talk. When the demon had gone out, the man began to speak, and the crowds were amazed.15 But some of them said, "He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons."16 Others, wanting to test Jesus, kept asking him for a sign from heaven.17 Since he knew what they were thinking, he said to them,"Every kingdom divided against itself is devastated, and a divided household collapses.18 Now if Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? For you say that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own followersdrive them out? That is why they will be your judges!20 But if I drive out demons by the fingerof God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own mansion, his property is safe.22 But when a stronger man than he attacks him and defeats him, he'll take away his armor in which he trusted and divide his plunder.23 The person who isn't with me is against me, and the person who doesn't gather with me scatters."24 "Whenever an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it wanders through dry places looking for a place to rest but doesn't find any. So it says, ‘I will go back to my home that I left.’25 When it arrives, it finds it swept clean and put in order.26 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and settle there. And so the final condition of that person is worse than the first."27 As Jesus was saying this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "How blessed is the womb that gave birth to you and the breasts that nursed you!"28 But he said,"Rather, how blessed are those who hear God's word and obey it!"29 Now as the crowds continued to throng around Jesus, he went on to say,"This generation is an evil generation. It craves a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.30 For just as Jonah became a signto the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.31 The queen of the south will stand up at the judgment with the people of this generation and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. But look, something greater than Solomon is here!32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. But look, something greater than Jonah is here!"33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a hiding placeor under a basket,but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light. But when it is evil, your body is full of darkness.35 Therefore, be careful that the light in you isn't darkness.36 Now if your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be as full of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays."37 After Jesus had said this, a Pharisee invited him to have a meal with him. So Jesus went and took his place at the table.38 The Pharisee was surprised to see that he didn't first wash before the meal.39 But the Lord said to him,"Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but on the inside you are full of greed and evil.40 You fools! The one who made the outside made the inside, too, didn't he?41 So give what is inside to the poor, and then everything will be clean for you.42 "How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! For you give a tenth of your mint, spices, and every kind of herb, but you neglect justice and the love of God. These are the things you should have practiced, without neglecting the others.43 How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! For you love to have the places of honor in the synagogues and to be greeted in the marketplaces.44 How terrible it will be for you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk on them without realizing it."45 Then one of the experts in the law said to him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us, too."46 Jesus said,"How terrible it will be for you experts in the law, too! For you load people with burdens that are hard to carry, yet you yourselves don't even lift one of your fingers to ease the burdens.47 How terrible it will be for you! For you build monuments for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them!48 Soyou are witnesses and approve of the deeds of your ancestors, because they killed those for whom you are building monuments.49 Thatis why the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles. They will kill some of them and persecute others,’50 sothat this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets that was shed since the foundation of the world,51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who died between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation!52 How terrible it will be for you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You didn't go in yourselves, and you kept out those who were trying to go in."53 When Jesus left, the scribes and the Pharisees began to fiercely oppose him and to interrogate him about many things,54 watching him closely in an effort to trap him in something he might say.
