1 Em um sábado, passando Jesus pelas searas, seus discípulos colhiam espigas e, debulhando-as com as mãos, comiam-nas.2 Perguntaram alguns dos fariseus: Por que fazeis o que não é lícito no sábado?3 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Nem ao menos tendes lido o que fez Davi, quando teve fome, ele e seus companheiros?4 como entrou na casa de Deus, tomou e comeu os pães da proposição, que somente aos sacerdotes era lícito comer, e os deu também aos que com ele estavam?5 E acrescentou: O Filho do homem é senhor do sábado.6 Em outro sábado entrou na sinagoga e começou a ensinar. Ali se achava um homem, que tinha seca a mão direita.7 Os escribas e os fariseus observaram-no para ver se ele curava nesse dia, a fim de acharem pretexto para o acusar.8 Mas ele, conhecendo-lhes os pensamentos, disse ao homem que tinha seca a mão: Levanta-te e fica no meio de nós; e ele, levantando-se, ficou em pé.9 Disse-lhes Jesus: Pergunto-vos: É lícito no sábado fazer o bem ou o mal, salvar a vida ou tirá-la?10 Depois de olhar para todos os que o rodeavam, disse ao homem: Estende a mão. Ele a estendeu, e a mão lhe foi restabelecida.11 Mas eles se encheram de furor; e falavam uns com os outros, para ver o que fariam a Jesus.12 Naqueles dias retirou-se para o monte a orar, e passou a noite, orando a Deus.13 Depois de amanhecer, chamou seus discípulos e escolheu doze dentre eles, aos quais deu também o nome de apóstolos,14 a saber: Simão, a quem deu ainda o nome de Pedro, e André, seu irmão; Tiago e João; Filipe e Bartolomeu;15 Mateus e Tomé; Tiago, filho de Alfeu, e Simão chamado zelote;16 Judas, filho de Tiago, e Judas Iscariotes, que se tornou traidor;17 e descendo com eles, parou num lugar plano, onde se achava grande número de seus discípulos e muito povo de toda a Judéia, de Jerusalém e do litoral de Tiro e de Sidom, que vieram para ouvi-lo e ser curados das suas enfermidades.18 Os que eram atormentados por espíritos imundos, ficavam sãos.19 Todo o povo procurava tocá-lo, porque saía dele uma virtude que os curava a todos.20 Olhando para seus discípulos, começou a dizer: Bem-aventurados vós os pobres, porque vosso é o reino de Deus.21 Bem-aventurados vós que agora tendes fome, porque sereis fartos. Bem-aventurados vós que agora chorais, porque vos rireis.22 Bem-aventurados sois, quando os homens vos odiarem, e quando vos expulsarem da sua companhia, vos ultrajarem e rejeitarem o vosso nome como indigno, por causa do Filho do homem.23 Regozijai-vos naquele dia e exultai, porque grande é o vosso galardão no céu; pois assim seus pais trataram aos profetas.24 Mas ai de vós que sois ricos! porque já recebestes a vossa consolação.25 Ai de vós, os que agora estais fartos! porque tereis fome. Ai de vós, os que agora rides! porque haveis de lamentar e chorar.26 Ai de vós, quando todos vos louvarem! porque assim seus pais trataram aos falsos profetas.27 Digo, porém, a vós que me ouvis: Amai os vossos inimigos, fazei o bem aos que vos odeiam,28 bendizei aos que vos maldizem, orai pelos que vos insultam.29 Ao que te bate numa face, oferece-lhe também a outra; e ao que te tira a capa, não lhe negues a túnica.30 Dá a todo o que te pede; e ao que tira o que é teu, não lho reclames.31 Assim como quereis que vos façam os homens, assim fazei vós também a eles.32 Se amais aqueles que vos amam, que mereceis? pois também os pecadores amam aos que os amam.33 Se fizerdes o bem aos que vos fazem o bem, que mereceis? até os pecadores fazem isso.34 Se emprestardes àqueles de quem esperais receber, que mereceis? até os pecadores emprestam aos pecadores, para receberem outro tanto.35 Amai, porém, os vossos inimigos, fazei o bem e emprestai, nunca desanimando; será grande a vossa recompensa, e sereis filhos do Altíssimo. Pois ele é benigno para com os ingratos e maus.36 Sede misericordiosos, como é misericordioso vosso Pai.37 Não julgueis, e não sereis julgados; não condeneis, e não sereis condenados; perdoai, e sereis perdoados;38 dai, e dar-se-vos-á; boa medida, recalcada, sacudida, trasbordando, vos porão no regaço; porque a medida de que usais, dessa tornarão a usar convosco.39 Propôs-lhes também uma parábola: Porventura pode um cego guiar outro cego? não cairão ambos no barranco?40 O discípulo não é mais que seu mestre; mas todo o discípulo quando for bem instruído, será como seu mestre.41 Por que vês o argueiro no olho de teu irmão, porém não reparas na trave que está no teu?42 Como poderás dizer a teu irmão: Deixa, irmão, que eu tire o argueiro do teu olho, não vendo tu mesmo a trave que está no teu? Hipócrita, tira primeiro a trave do teu olho, e então verás claramente para tirar o argueiro que está no olho de teu irmão.43 Não há árvore boa que dê mau fruto; nem tampouco árvore má que dê bom fruto.44 Pois cada árvore se conhece pelo seu fruto. Os homens não colhem figos dos espinheiros, nem dos abrolhos vindimam uvas.45 O homem bom do bom tesouro do seu coração tira o bem, e o homem mau do mau tesouro tira o mal; porque a sua boca fala o de que está cheio o coração.46 Por que me chamais, Senhor, Senhor, e não fazeis o que vos mando?47 Todo aquele que vem a mim e ouve as minhas palavras e as observa, eu vos mostrarei a quem é semelhante.48 É semelhante a um homem que, edificando uma casa, cavou, abriu profunda vala e pôs os alicerces sobre a rocha; e vindo uma enchente, deu a torrente com ímpeto naquela casa, e não a pôde abalar, porque tinha sido bem edificada.49 Mas aquele que as ouve, e não as observa, é semelhante a um homem que edificou uma casa sobre a terra sem alicerces; na qual a torrente deu com ímpeto, e logo caiu; e foi grande a ruína daquela casa.

1 Once, on the second Sabbath after the first, Jesus was walking through some grainfields. His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.2 Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"3 Jesus answered them,"Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions became hungry?4 How was it that he went into the house of God and took and ate the Bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for anyone but the priests to eat, and gave some of it to his companions?"5 Then he said to them,"The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."6 Once, on another Sabbath, Jesus went into a synagogue and began teaching. A man whose right hand was paralyzed was there.7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, in order to find a way of accusing him of doing something wrong.8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to the man with the paralyzed hand,"Get up, and stand in the middle of the synagogue." So he got up and stood there.9 Then Jesus said to them,"I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?"10 He looked around at all of them and then said to the man,"Hold out your hand." The man did so, and his hand was restored to health.11 The others were filled with fury and began to discuss with each other what they could do to Jesus.12 Now it was in those days that Jesus went to a mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.13 When daylight came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also called apostles:14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholemew,15 Matthew, Thomas, James (the son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the Zealot),16 Judas (the son of James), and Judas Iscariot (who became a traitor).17 Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, along with a huge crowd of his disciples and a large gathering of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Even those who were being tormented by unclean spirits were being healed.19 The entire crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing all of them.20 Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "How blessed are you who are destitute,for the kingdom of God is yours!21 How blessed are you who are hungry now,for you will be satisfied! How blessed are you who are crying now,for you will laugh!22 How blessed are you whenever people hate you, avoid you, insult you, and slander you because of the Son of Man!23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for your reward in heaven is great! For that's the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.24 "But how terrible it will be for you who are rich,for you have had your comfort!25 How terrible it will be for you who are full now,for you will be hungry! How terrible it will be for you who are laughing now,for you will mourn and cry!26 How terrible it will be for you when everyone says nice things about you, for that's the way their ancestors used to treat the false prophets!"27 "But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.28 Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who insult you.29 If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one as well, and if someone takes your coat, don't keep back your shirt, either.30 Keep on giving to everyone who asks you for something, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not insist on getting it back.31 Whatever you want people to do for you, do the same for them.32 "If you love those who love you, what thanks do you deserve? Why, even sinners love those who love them.33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners do that.34 If you lend to those from whom you expect to get something back, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back what they lend.35 Rather, love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he is kind to ungrateful and evil people.36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."37 "Stop judging, and you will never be judged. Stop condemning, and you will never be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.38 Give, and it will be given to you. A large quantity, pressed together, shaken down, and running over will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use,you will be measured."39 He also told them a parable:"One blind person can't lead another blind person, can he? Both will fall into a ditch, won't they?40 A disciple is not better than his teacher. But everyone who is fully-trained will be like his teacher.41 "Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you don't see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you'll see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye."43 "A good tree doesn't produce rotten fruit, and a rotten tree doesn't produce good fruit.44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. Peopledon't gather figs from thorny plants or pick grapes from a thorn bush.45 A good person produces good from the good treasure of his heart, and an evil person produces evil from an evil treasure. For it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks."46 "Why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but don't do what I tell you?47 I will show you what everyone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.48 He is like a person building a house, who dug a deep hole to lay the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the floodwaters pushed against that house but couldn't shake it, because it had been founded on the rock.49 But the person who hears what I saybut doesn't act on it is like someone who built a house on the ground without any foundation. When the floodwaters pushed against it, that housequickly collapsed, and the ruin of that house was devastating."
