1 Tendo Jesus concluído todos os seus discursos dirigidos ao povo, entrou em Cafarnaum.2 Um servo de um centurião, a quem este muito estimava, estava doente, quase à morte.3 O centurião, tendo ouvido falar a respeito de Jesus, enviou-lhe alguns anciãos dos judeus, pedindo-lhe que viesse curar o seu servo.4 Estes, chegando-se a Jesus, com instância lhe suplicaram: Ele é digno de que lhe faças isto;5 pois é amigo do nosso povo, e ele mesmo edificou a nossa sinagoga.6 Jesus foi com eles. Quando ia chegando à casa, o centurião enviou-lhe amigos para lhe dizer: Senhor, não te incomodes, porque não sou digno de que entres em minha casa.7 Por isso eu mesmo não me julguei digno de vir a ti; mas dize uma palavra, e o meu criado ficará são.8 Pois também eu sou homem sujeito à autoridade, e tenho soldados às minhas ordens, e digo a um: Vai ali, e ele vai; e a outro: Vem cá, e ele vem; e ao meu servo: Faze isto, e ele o faz.9 Jesus, ouvindo isto, admirou-se e, virando-se para a multidão que o acompanhava, disse: Eu vos afirmo que nem mesmo em Israel achei tamanha fé.10 Voltando para casa os que haviam sido enviados, encontraram o servo de perfeita saúde.11 Em dia subseqüente dirigia-se Jesus para uma cidade chamada Naim, e iam com ele seus discípulos e uma grande multidão.12 Ao aproximar-se ele da porta da cidade, eis que levavam para fora um defunto, filho único de sua mãe, que era viúva; e vinha com ela muita gente da cidade.13 Logo que o Senhor a viu, compadeceu-se dela, e disse-lhe: Não chores.14 Chegando-se, tocou o esquife e, parando os que o conduziam, disse: Moço, eu te mando, levanta-te.15 Aquele que havia estado morto, sentou-se e começou a falar; e Jesus o entregou à mãe dele.16 Todos ficaram cheios de medo, e glorificaram a Deus, dizendo: Um grande profeta levantou-se entre nós, e: Deus visitou ao seu povo.17 A notícia disto se divulgou por toda a Judéia e por toda a circunvizinhança.18 Todas estas coisas foram contadas a João pelos seus discípulos.19 João, chamando dois deles, enviou-os ao Senhor para perguntar: És tu aquele que há de vir, ou havemos de esperar outro?20 Quando estes homens chegaram a Jesus, disseram: João Batista enviou-nos para te perguntar: És tu aquele que há de vir, ou havemos de esperar outro.21 Na mesma hora curou Jesus a muitos de moléstias, de flagelos e de espíritos malignos; e deu vista a muitos cegos.22 Então lhes respondeu: Ide contar a João o que vistes e ouvistes; os cegos vêem, os coxos andam, os leprosos ficam limpos, os surdos ouvem, os mortos são ressuscitados, aos pobres anuncia-se-lhes o Evangelho;23 e bem-aventurado é aquele que não achar em mim motivo de tropeço.24 Partidos que foram os mensageiros de João, começou Jesus a falar ao povo a respeito de João: Que saístes a ver no deserto? uma cana agitada pelo vento?25 Mas que saístes a ver? um homem vestido de roupas finas? Os que se vestem ricamente e vivem no luxo, assistem nos palácios dos reis.26 Mas que saístes a ver? um profeta? Sim, vos digo, e muito mais do que profeta.27 Este é aquele de quem está escrito: Eis aí envio eu ante a tua face o meu anjo, Que há de preparar o teu caminho diante de ti.28 Eu vos digo: Entre os nascidos de mulher não há nenhum maior do que João; mas o que é menor no reino de Deus, é maior do que ele.29 Ao ouvir isto, todo o povo e até os publicanos reconheceram a justiça de Deus, sendo batizados com o batismo de João;30 mas os fariseus e os doutores da lei frustraram o desígnio de Deus quanto a si mesmos, não sendo batizados por ele.31 A que, pois, compararei os homens desta geração, e a que são eles semelhantes?32 São semelhantes aos meninos que se assentam na praça e gritam uns para os outros: Nós vos tocamos flauta, e vós não dançastes; entoamos lamentações, e não pranteastes.33 Pois veio João Batista não comendo pão nem bebendo vinho, e dizeis: Ele tem demônio.34 Veio o Filho do homem comendo e bebendo, e dizeis: Eis um homem glutão e bebedor de vinho, amigo de publicanos e pecadores?35 Contudo a sabedoria é justificada por todos os seus filhos.36 Um dos fariseus convidou-o para jantar com ele. Jesus, entrando na casa do fariseu, tomou lugar à mesa.37 Havia na cidade uma mulher que era pecadora; ela, sabendo que ele estava jantando na casa do fariseu, trouxe um vaso de alabastro com perfume e,38 pondo-se-lhe aos pés, chorando, começou a regá-los com lágrimas, e os enxugava com os cabelos da sua cabeça, e beijava-lhe os pés e ungia-os com o perfume.39 Ao ver isto, o fariseu que o convidara, dizia consigo: Se este homem fosse profeta, saberia quem é a que o toca e que sorte de mulher é, pois é uma pecadora.40 Disse Jesus ao fariseu: Simão, tenho uma coisa para te dizer. Ele respondeu: Dize-a, Mestre.41 Certo credor tinha dois devedores: um lhe devia quinhentos denários, e o outro cinqüenta.42 Não tendo nenhum dos dois com que pagar, perdoou a dívida a ambos. Qual deles, portanto, o amará mais?43 Respondeu Simão: Suponho que aquele a quem mais perdoou. Replicou-lhe: Julgaste bem.44 Virando-se para a mulher, disse a Simão: Vês esta mulher? Entrei em tua casa, e não me deste água para os pés; mas esta mos regou com lágrimas e os enxugou com os seus cabelos.45 Não me deste ósculo; ela, porém, desde que entrei, não cessou de beijar-me os pés.46 Não ungiste a minha cabeça com óleo, mas esta com perfume ungiu os meus pés.47 Por isso te digo: Perdoados lhe são os seus pecados, que são muitos, porque ela muito amou; mas aquele a quem pouco se perdoa, pouco ama.48 Disse à mulher: Perdoados são os teus pecados.49 Os que estavam com ele à mesa, começaram a dizer consigo mesmos: Quem é este que até perdoa pecados?50 Mas Jesus disse à mulher: A tua fé te salvou; vai-te em paz.

1 After Jesus had finished saying all these things in the hearing of the people, he went to Capernaum.2 There a centurion's servant, whom he valued highly, was sick and about to die.3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and save his servant's life.4 So they went to Jesus and begged him repeatedly, "He deserves to have this done for him,5 because he loves our people and built our synagogue for us."6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to tell Jesus, "Sir, stop troubling yourself. For I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.7 That's why I didn't presume to come to you. But just say the word, and let my servant be healed.8 For I, too, am a man under authority and have soldiers under me. I say to one ‘Go’ and he goes, to another ‘Come’ and he comes, and to my servant ‘Do this’ and he does it."9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said,"I tell you, not even in Israel have I found this kind of faith!"10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant in perfect health.11 Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a city called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were going along with him.12 As he approached the entrance to the city, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.13 When the Lord saw her, he felt compassion for her. He said to her,"You can stop crying."14 Then he went up and touched the open coffin, and the men who were carrying it stopped. He said,"Young man, I say to you, get up!"15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.16 Fear gripped everyone, and they began to praise God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us," and "God has helped his people."17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding countryside.18 John's disciples told him about all these things. So John called two of his disciples19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?"20 When the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?’"21 At that time Jesus had healed many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits and had given sight to many who were blind.22 So he answered them,"Go and tell John what you have observed and heard: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear again, the dead are raised, and the destitute hear the good news.23 How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!"24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John."What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?25 Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? See, those who wear fine clothes and live in luxury are in royal palaces.26 Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!27 Thisis the man about whom it is written,‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,who will prepare your way before you.’28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."29 All the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, for they had been baptized with John's baptism.30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God's plan for themselves by refusing to be baptized by him.31 "To what can I compare the people of this generation?32 Theyare like little children who sit in the marketplace and shout to each other,‘A wedding song we played for you,the dance you did but scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too,but then you did not mourn.’33 For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, yet you say, ‘He has a demon!’34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’35 Absolved from every act of sin,is wisdom by her kith and kin."36 Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. So he went to the Pharisee's home and took his place at the table.37 There was a woman who was a notorious sinner in that city. When she learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's home, she took an alabaster jar of perfume38 and knelt at his feet behind him. She was crying and began to wash his feet with her tears and dry them with her hair. Then she kissed his feet over and over again, anointing them constantly with the perfume.39 Now the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who is touching him and what kind of woman she is. She's a sinner!"40 Jesus said to him,"Simon, I have something to say to you.""Teacher," he replied, "say it."41 "Two men were in debt to a moneylender. One owed him 500 denarii,and the other fifty.42 When they couldn't pay it back, he generously canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him the most?"43 Simon answered, "I suppose the one who had the larger debt canceled."Jesus said to him,"You have answered correctly."44 Then, turning to the woman, he said to Simon,"Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You didn't give me any water for my feet, but this woman has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.45 You didn't give me a kiss,but this woman, from the moment I came in, has not stopped kissing my feet.46 Youdidn't anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet with perfume.47 So I'm telling you that her sins, as many as they are, have been forgiven, and that's why she has shown such great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little."48 Then Jesus said to her,"Your sins are forgiven!"49 Those who were at the table with them began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"50 But Jesus said to the woman,"Your faith had saved you. Go in peace."
