A alegria de João

2 Amado, peço a Deus que prosperes em tudo e tenhas saúde, assim como tua alma prospera. 3 Pois *2Jo 4folgo muito quando *3Jo 5,10;At 1.15; cp.Gl 6.10os irmãos vêm dar testemunho da tua verdade, como tu andas em verdade. 4 Não tenho maior alegria do que saber que *1Jo 2.1; cp.1Co 4.14s.;2Co 6.13;Gl 4.19;1Ts 2.11;1Tm 1.2;2Tm 1.2;Fm 10meus filhos andam na verdade.

O dever da liberdade

5 Amado, tu procedes fielmente em tudo o que fazes aos irmãos, e estes até *cp.Rm 12.13;Hb 13.2estranhos, 6 os quais dão testemunho do teu amor diante da igreja, aos quais farás bem *cp.At 15.3;Tt 3.13se ajudares na sua viagem *1Ts 2.12; cp.Cl 1.10de um modo digno de Deus; 7 pois, por amor do *At 5.41;Jo 15.21; cp.Fp 2.9Nome, é que eles saíram, *At 20.33,35nada aceitando dos gentios. 8 Devemos, pois, acolher tais homens, a fim de que nos tornemos cooperadores com eles na obra da verdade.

Diótrefes, o triunfo temporário da ambição

9 Escrevi algumas palavras à igreja; mas Diótrefes, que gosta da *cp.2Jo 9primazia entre eles, não nos recebe. 10 Por isso, *cp.2Jo 12quando eu aí for, fá-lo-ei lembrar as obras que faz, falando palavras malignas contra nós; e, não satisfeito com isso, ele mesmo *3Jo 5; cp.2Jo 10não recebe *3Jo 3os irmãos e, àqueles que os querem receber, ele proíbe de o fazerem, e ainda *cp.Jo 9.34os exclui da igreja. 11 Amado, *Sl 34.14;37.27, etc.não imites o mal, mas o bem. Aquele *1Jo 2.29;3.10que faz o bem é de Deus; *1Jo 3.6aquele que faz o mal nunca viu a Deus. 12 De Demétrio todos e a própria verdade *cp.At 6.3;1Tm 3.7dão testemunho; nós também damos testemunho, *Jo 21.24; cp.Jo 19.35e sabes que o nosso testemunho é verdadeiro.

Conclusão

13 *2Jo 12Tinha eu muitas coisas que te escrever, porém não o quero fazer com tinta e pena; 14 mas espero ver-te brevemente; então, falaremos face a face. *1Pe 5.14;Ef 6.23; cp.Jo 20.19,21,26Paz seja contigo. Os amigos te saúdam. Saúda aos amigos *Jo 10.3nominalmente.

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. 5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: 7 Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: 14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
