Prefácio

1 No primeiro livro relatei, ó *Lc 1.3Teófilo, todas as coisas que Jesus *Lc 3.23começou a fazer e a ensinar 2 até o dia em que *Mc 16.19;At 1.9,11,22foi recebido acima, depois de *Mt 28.19s.;Mc 16.15;Jo 20.21s.; cp.At 10.42haver dado preceitos pelo Espírito Santo aos *Mc 6.30apóstolos que *Jo 13.18; cp.At 10.41escolhera; 3 aos quais *Mt 28.17;Mc 16.12,14;Lc 24.34,36;Jo 20.19,26;21.1,14;1Co 15.5-7ele também, depois de haver padecido, apresentou-se vivo, dando disso muitas provas, aparecendo-lhes por espaço de quarenta dias e falando *cp.At 8.12;19.8;28.23,31das coisas concernentes ao reino de Deus. 4 Reunido a eles, ordenou-lhes *Lc 24.49que não saíssem de Jerusalém, mas que esperassem *At 2.33; cp.Jo 14.16,26;15.26a promessa feita pelo Pai, a qual (disse ele) de mim ouvistes; 5 pois *At 11.16;Mt 3.11João, na verdade, batizou com água, mas vós sereis batizados com o Espírito Santo, *At 2.1-4dentro de poucos dias.

A ascensão de Jesus

6 Eles, estando reunidos outra vez, perguntaram-lhe: Senhor, *Mt 17.11;Mc 9.12;Lc 17.20;19.11é agora, porventura, que restabeleces o reino a Israel? 7 Ele lhes respondeu: A vós não vos compete saber os tempos ou as épocas que *Mt 24.36;Mc 13.32o Pai fixou pela sua própria autoridade; 8 mas recebereis poder, *At 2.1-4ao descer sobre vós o Espírito Santo, e sereis *Lc 24.48;Jo 15.27minhas testemunhas tanto em Jerusalém como em toda a Judeia e *At 8.1,5,14Samaria e até *Mt 28.19;Mc 16.15; cp.Cl 1.23;Rm 10.18as extremidades da terra. 9 Tendo dito essas coisas, *At 1.2foi Jesus elevado à vista deles, e uma nuvem o recebeu e ocultou aos seus olhos. 10 Estando eles com os olhos fitos no céu, enquanto ele subia, eis que *cp.Lc 24.4;Jo 20.12dois varões com vestiduras brancas se puseram ao lado deles 11 e lhes perguntaram: *At 2.7; cp.13.31Galileus, por que estais olhando para o céu? Esse Jesus que dentre vós *Mc 16.19;At 1.2,9,22foi recebido no céu assim *Mt 16.27s.; cp.At 3.21virá do modo como o vistes ir para o céu.

Os apóstolos em Jerusalém

12 Então, *Lc 24.50,52voltaram para Jerusalém do *cp.Mt 21.1monte chamado Olival, que está perto de Jerusalém, na distância da jornada de um sábado. 13 Quando entraram, subiram ao *At 9.37,39;20.8; cp.Mc 14.15;Lc 22.12cenáculo, onde assistiam *At 1.13;Mt 10.2-4;Mc 3.16-19;Lc 6.14-16Pedro, João, Tiago e André; Filipe, Tomé, Bartolomeu e Mateus; Tiago, filho de Alfeu, e Simão, o zelote, e *Jo 14.22Judas, filho de Tiago. 14 Todos estes *At 2.42;6.4;Rm 12.12;Cl 4.2; cp.Ef 6.18perseveravam unanimemente em oração com *Lc 8.2s.as mulheres, e com Maria, *Mt 12.46mãe de Jesus, e com os irmãos dele.

A escolha de Matias

15 Naqueles dias, levantou-se Pedro no meio dos *Jo 21.23;At 6.3;9.30;10.23;11.1,12,29;12.17;14.2;15.1,3,22-23,32-33,40;16.2,40;17.6,10,14;18.18,27;21.7,17;22.5;28.14-15, etc.;Rm 1.13; cp.At 11.26irmãos (estava ali reunida uma multidão de cerca de cento e vinte pessoas) e disse: 16 Irmãos, convinha que se cumprisse a *At 1.20; cp.Jo 13.18;17.12Escritura que o Espírito Santo predisse por boca de Davi acerca de Judas, que *Mt 26.47;Mc 14.43;Lc 22.47;Jo 18.3foi o guia daqueles que prenderam a Jesus 17 porque era ele *Jo 6.70s.contado entre nós e tomou parte *At 1.25;At 20.24;21.19neste ministério. 18 (Ora, esse homem *cp.Mt 27.3-10adquiriu um campo com *Mt 26.14s.o preço da sua iniquidade e, precipitando-se de cabeça para baixo, arrebentou pelo meio, e todas as suas entranhas se derramaram; 19 e tornou-se isso conhecido de todos os habitantes de Jerusalém, de maneira que em *cp.At 21.40;Mt 27.8sua própria língua esse campo era chamado Aceldama, isto é, Campo de Sangue.) 20 Pois está escrito *Sl 69.25;109.8no livro dos Salmos:

Fique deserta a sua habitação,

e não haja quem nela habite;

e:

Tome outro o seu ministério.

21 É necessário, pois, que, dos homens que nos acompanharam todo o tempo em que *Lc 24.3o Senhor Jesus viveu entre nós, 22 *Mc 1.1-4começando desde o batismo de João até o dia em que dentre nós *At 1.2foi recebido acima, um destes se torne *At 1.8;2.32testemunha conosco da sua ressurreição. 23 Apresentaram dois — José, também chamado Barsabás, que tinha por sobrenome Justo, e *At 1.26Matias. 24 E, *cp.At 6.6;13.3;14.23orando, disseram: Tu, Senhor, *At 15.8;Rm 8.27;1Sm 16.7;Jr 17.10que conheces os corações de todos, mostra qual destes dois tens escolhido, 25 para tomar o lugar *At 1.17deste ministério e *cp.Rm 1.5;1Co 9.2;Gl 2.8apostolado, do qual Judas se transviou para ir ao seu próprio lugar. 26 A respeito deles *Lv 16.8;Js 14.2;1Sm 14.41s.;Ne 10.34;11.1, etc.; cp.Pv 16.33deitaram sortes; caiu a sorte sobre Matias, e foi ele contado com *At 2.14os onze apóstolos.

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) 16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. 21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. 23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, 25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
