A vocação de Jonas; a sua fuga e o seu castigo

Desceu a *2Cr 2.16;Ed 3.7;At 9.36,43Jope e achou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem e embarcou nele para ir com eles a Társis da presença de Jeová.

4 Mas *Sl 107.25-28;135.7Jeová lançou no mar um grande vento, e fez-se no mar uma grande tempestade, de sorte que o navio estava em perigo de se fazer em pedaços. 5 Então, os marinheiros tiveram medo, e clamavam cada um *1Rs 18.26ao seu deus, *At 27.18-19,38e alijaram ao mar a carga que estava no navio, para o aliviarem. Jonas, porém, tinha descido ao interior do navio; e, tendo-se deitado, dormia um profundo sono. 6 Chegou-se a ele o piloto e disse-lhe: Que estás fazendo, ó tu que dormes? Levanta-te, *Sl 107.23clama ao teu Deus, a ver se, acaso, *Jn 3.9;2Sm 12.22;Am 5.15Deus se lembrará de nós, para que não pereçamos. 7 Disseram uns aos outros: Vinde, *Js 7.14-18;1Sm 10.20-21;14.41-42;At 1.23-26e deitemos sortes, para sabermos por causa de quem nos acontece este mal. Deitaram, pois, sortes, *Nm 32.23;Pv 16.33e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas. 8 Então, lhe disseram: *Js 7.19;1Sm 14.43Dize-nos: por causa de quem nos acontece este mal. Qual é a tua *Gn 47.3;1Sm 30.13ocupação? Donde vens? Qual é a tua terra? E de que povo és? 9 Respondeu-lhes ele: Eu sou *Gn 14.13;Êx 1.15;2.13hebreu *2Rs 17.25,28,32-33e temo a Jeová, *Ed 1.2;Ne 1.4;Sl 136.26;Dn 2.18Deus do céu, *Ne 9.6;Sl 95.5;146.6que fez o mar e a terra. 10 Então, os homens ficaram possuídos de grande medo e lhe disseram: Que é isso que fizeste? Pois os homens souberam que ele *Jn 1.3;Jó 27.22fugia da presença de Jeová, porque lho havia dito.

11 Disseram-lhe: Que te faremos nós, para que o mar cesse de se levantar contra nós? Pois o mar se ia tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso. 12 Respondeu-lhes: *2Sm 24.17Levantai-me e lançai-me no mar; assim, cessará o mar de se levantar contra vós, porque eu sei que é *1Cr 21.17por minha causa que vos sobreveio esta grande tempestade. 13 Todavia, os homens se esforçavam com os remos para tornar a ganhar a terra; porém *Pv 21.30não podiam, pois o mar se ia tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso contra eles. 14 Por isso, clamaram *Jn 1.16;Sl 107.28a Jeová e disseram: Rogamos-te, Jeová, que não pereçamos por causa da vida deste homem e que não faças cair sobre nós o sangue inocente; pois tu, *Sl 115.3;135.6;Dn 4.34-35Jeová, fizeste como foi do teu agrado. 15 Levantaram, pois, a Jonas e lançaram-no ao mar; e o mar *Sl 65.7;93.3-4;107.29cessou da sua fúria. 16 Então, os homens temeram em extremo a Jeová; ofereceram sacrifícios *1Sm 6.2-5;Dn 4.34-37a Jeová e fizeram *Sl 50.14;66.13-14votos.

Jonas no ventre do grande peixe; sua oração e seu salvamento

17 *Jn 4.6Jeová preparou um grande peixe que tragasse a Jonas, e Jonas esteve no *Mt 12.40ventre do peixe três dias e três noites.

1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,*1.1 Jonah: Gr. Jonas 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.*1.4 sent out: Heb. cast forth*1.4 was like…: Heb. thought to be broken 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. 7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.*1.9 the LORD: or, JEHOVAH 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this?
