Os pecados e o castigo de Edom

1 Visão de Obadias.

Assim diz o Senhor Jeová acerca de *Sl 137.7;Is 34.1-17;63.1-6;Jr 49.7-22;Ez 25.12-14Edom: Da parte de Jeová *Ob 1.1-4;Jr 49.14-16ouvimos novas, e por entre as nações foi enviado um *Is 18.2;30.4mensageiro a dizer: *Jr 6.4-5Levantai-vos, e levantemo-nos contra Edom em guerra. 2 Eis que te fiz *Nm 24.18;Is 23.9pequeno entre as nações; tu és em extremo desprezado. 3 A *Is 16.6;Jr 49.16soberba do teu coração acaba de te enganar, ó tu que habitas nas fendas do *2Rs 14.7;2Cr 25.12penhasco, e cuja habitação é elevada; que dizes no teu coração: *Is 14.13-15Quem me derrubará em terra? 4 Embora *Jó 20.6-7;Hc 2.9subas ao alto como águia, e embora seja o teu ninho posto entre as *Is 14.12-15estrelas, dali te derrubarei, diz Jeová.

5 Se a ti viessem *Jr 49.9ladrões, se, de noite, salteadores (como és *Ob 1.9-10exterminado!), não furtariam eles até que lhes bastasse? Se a ti viessem vindimadores, não te deixariam umas *Is 17.6;24.13uvas de rabisco?

6 Como têm sido as coisas de Esaú *Jr 49.10esquadrinhadas! Como têm sido investigados os seus tesouros ocultos! 7 Todos os teus *Jr 30.14confederados te fizeram acompanhar no caminho até os confins; os homens que estavam *Jr 38.22de paz contigo te enganaram e contra ti prevaleceram; os que comem *Sl 41.9o teu pão põem debaixo de ti uma armadilha; *Jr 49.7não há nele entendimento. 8 Acaso, naquele dia, não farei eu, diz Jeová, *Jó 5.12-14perecer de Edom os sábios e, do monte de Esaú, o entendimento? 9 Os teus *Jr 49.22valentes, *Gn 36.11;1Cr 1.45;Jó 2.11;Jr 49.7,20;Ez 25.13;Am 1.12;Hc 3.3ó Temã, estarão atemorizados, a fim de que, pela matança, cada um seja *Ob 1.5;Is 34.5-8;63.1-3exterminado do monte de Esaú.

Sua perversa alegria por causa da infelicidade de Israel

10 Por causa *Ez 25.12;Jl 3.19;Am 1.11da violência feita a teu irmão Jacó, cobrir-te-á a vergonha, e serás exterminado para sempre. 11 No dia em que *Sl 83.5-6;137.7;Am 1.6,9estiveste do lado oposto, no dia em que estrangeiros lhe levaram os bens, e forasteiros lhe entraram nas portas *Jl 3.3;Na 3.10e deitaram sortes sobre Jerusalém, tu também eras como um deles. 12 Porém, no dia da sua calamidade, *Mq 4.11;7.10não olhes para o dia de teu irmão *Ez 35.15;36.5e não te regozijes sobre os filhos de Judá no dia da sua destruição; *Sl 31.18;Ez 35.12nem fales arrogantemente no dia da tribulação. 13 Não entres na porta do meu povo no *Ez 35.5dia da sua calamidade, nem tampouco zombes dos seus males no dia da sua calamidade, *Ez 35.10;36.2-3nem ponhas mãos sobre os seus bens no dia da sua calamidade. 14 *Is 16.3-4Não te postes na encruzilhada, para lhe exterminares os que escaparem; e não entregues os que lhe ficarem no dia da tribulação.

15 Pois o *Jl 1.15;2.1,11,31;Am 5.18,20Dia de Jeová está perto sobre todas as nações; *Jr 50.29;51.56como tens feito, assim se te fará a ti; *Ez 35.11o teu feito tornará sobre a tua cabeça. 16 Pois como *Jr 49.12-13bebeste sobre o meu santo monte, assim *Is 51.22-23;Jr 25.15-16beberão de contínuo todas as nações, sim, beberão, e sorverão, e serão como se nunca fossem.

17 No monte *Is 4.2-3de Sião, porém, estarão os que escaparem e serão santos; e os da casa de Jacó *Is 14.1-2;Am 9.11-15possuirão as suas herdades. 18 A casa de Jacó será um *Is 5.24;9.18-19fogo, e a casa de José, uma chama, e a casa de Esaú servirá de restolho; aqueles arderão entre estes e os devorarão; *Jr 11.23;Am 1.8e ninguém mais restará da casa de Esaú, porque Jeová o disse. 19 Os do Neguebe *Is 11.14;Am 9.12possuirão o monte de Esaú; os da planície, *Is 11.14os filisteus; *Jr 31.5;32.44possuirão o campo de Efraim e o campo de Samaria; e Benjamim possuirá a Gileade. 20 A posse do cativeiro desse exército dos filhos de Israel que se acham entre os cananeus estender-se-á até *1Rs 17.9-10;Lc 4.26Sarepta; e o cativeiro de Jerusalém que se acha em Sefarade possuirá *Jr 32.44;33.13as cidades do Neguebe. 21 *Ne 9.27Salvadores subirão ao *Ob 1.3monte de Sião para julgarem o monte de Esaú; *Sl 22.28;47.7-9;67.4;Zc 14.9e o reino será de Jeová.

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle. 2 Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? 4 Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD. 5 If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?*1.5 some…: or, gleanings? 6 How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up! 7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.*1.7 that were…: Heb. of thy peace*1.7 they…: Heb. the men of thy bread*1.7 in him: or, of it 8 Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau? 9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. 11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.*1.11 captive…: or, his substance 12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.*1.12 spoken…: Heb. magnified thy mouth 13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;*1.13 substance: or, forces 14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.*1.14 delivered up: or, shut up 15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. 16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.*1.16 swallow…: or, sup up

17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.*1.17 deliverance: or, they that escape*1.17 there…: or, it shall be holy 18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it. 19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead. 20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.*1.20 which…: or, shall possess that which is in 21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.
