Paulo e Silas em Tessalônica

1 Tendo passado por Anfípolis e Apolônia, chegaram a *At 17.11,13;At 27.2;Fp 4.16;2Tm 4.10; cp.At 20.4;1Ts 1.1;2Ts 1.1Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga de judeus. 2 Paulo, *At 9.20;At 17.10,17segundo o seu costume, ali entrou e, por três *At 13.14sábados, discutiu com eles, tirando argumentos das *At 8.35Escrituras, 3 expondo e demonstrando *At 3.18ser necessário que o Cristo padecesse *Jo 20.9e ressurgisse dentre os mortos. *At 9.22;18.5,28Este Jesus, que eu vos anuncio, dizia ele, é o Cristo. 4 *At 14.4Alguns deles ficaram persuadidos e se associaram com *At 17.10;At 15.40;At 15.22;At 17.14s.Paulo e Silas, bem como uma grande multidão de *Jo 7.35gregos *At 17.17;At 13.43devotos e não poucas *At 13.50mulheres de qualidade. 5 Porém *At 17.13;1Ts 2.16os judeus, movidos de inveja, tomando consigo alguns homens maus dentre o vulgacho e ajuntando a turba, amotinaram a cidade e, assaltando a casa de *At 17.6-7,9;Rm 16.21(?)Jasom, procuravam-nos para os entregar ao povo. 6 Porém, não os achando, *cp.At 16.19s.levaram a Jasom e alguns irmãos à presença das autoridades da cidade, clamando: Estes que têm transtornado *At 17.31;Mt 24.14o mundo chegaram também aqui, 7 aos quais Jasom *cp.Lc 10.38;Tg 2.25recolheu. Todos eles vão *Lc 23.2de encontro aos decretos de César, dizendo haver outro rei, que é Jesus. 8 Ao ouvirem isso, ficaram perturbadas a multidão e as autoridades da cidade; 9 e, tendo *At 17.5Jasom e os mais prestado fiança, foram soltos.

Paulo e Silas em Bereia

10 Logo pela noite, *At 17.6,14s.;At 1.15os irmãos enviaram a *At 17.4Paulo e Silas para *At 17.13;At 20.4Bereia; e, tendo eles aí chegado, foram *At 17.2à sinagoga dos judeus. 11 Ora, estes eram mais nobres do que os de *At 17.1Tessalônica, porque receberam a palavra com toda a avidez, indagando diariamente nas Escrituras se essas coisas eram assim. 12 *At 2.47Muitos deles creram, bem como não poucas *At 13.50mulheres gregas *Mc 15.43de boa posição e homens. 13 Quando os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que também em *At 17.10;At 20.4Bereia era anunciada por Paulo a palavra de Deus, foram lá excitar e perturbar o povo. 14 Então, *At 17.6,10;At 1.15os irmãos fizeram logo sair a Paulo para que fosse até o mar. Porém *At 17.4,10;At 15.22Silas e *At 16.1Timóteo ficaram ali. 15 *cp.At 15.3Os que conduziam a Paulo levaram-no até *At 17.16,21s.;At 18.1;1Ts 3.1Atenas e, tendo eles recebido ordem para comunicar a *At 17.14Silas e Timóteo que *At 18.5fossem ter com ele o mais depressa possível, partiram.

O discurso de Paulo em Atenas

16 Enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito revoltava-se dentro de si mesmo, vendo a cidade cheia de ídolos. 17 Assim, *At 9.20; cp.At 17.2na sinagoga, discutia ele com os judeus e *At 17.4com os que temiam a Deus e, na praça, todos os dias, discutia com os que ali se achavam. 18 Mas alguns filósofos epicureus e estoicos contendiam com ele, e uns diziam: Que quererá dizer *cp.1Co 4.10;1.20este paroleiro? E outros: Parece ser proclamador de deuses estranhos; pois pregava a *At 4.2;At 17.31s.Jesus e a ressurreição. 19 *cp.At 23.19Segurando-o, levaram-no ao *At 17.22Areópago, dizendo: Podemos saber que *cp.Mc 1.27nova doutrina é esta que anuncias? 20 Pois tu nos trazes aos ouvidos coisas estranhas; queremos saber que vem a ser isso. 21 Ora, todos os atenienses e os *At 17.15estrangeiros que ali moravam não se ocupavam em outra coisa senão em contar ou em ouvir alguma novidade. 22 Paulo, posto em pé no meio do Areópago, disse:

*At 17.15Atenienses, em tudo vos vejo muitíssimo tementes aos deuses. 23 Pois, passando e observando os *2Ts 2.4objetos do vosso culto, achei um altar em que estava escrito: AO DEUS DESCONHECIDO. O que, pois, *cp.Jo 4.22adorais sem o conhecer é o que eu vos anuncio. 24 *Is 42.5;At 14.15O Deus que fez o mundo e tudo o que nele há, sendo ele *Mt 11.25; cp.Dt 10.14;Sl 115.16o Senhor do céu e da terra, *At 7.48não habita em santuários feitos por mãos dos homens, 25 nem é servido por mãos humanas, *Sl 50.10-12; cp.Jó 22.2como se necessitasse de alguma coisa, visto ele mesmo dar a todos vida, respiração e todas as coisas; 26 *Ml 2.10e de um só fez todo o gênero humano para habitar sobre toda a face da terra, havendo *Dt 32.8;Jó 12.23fixado os seus tempos determinados e os limites da sua habitação; 27 para buscarem a Deus, se, porventura, apalpando, o achassem, *Dt 4.7;Jr 23.23s.; cp.14.17ainda que não esteja longe de cada um de nós. 28 Pois *Jó 12.10;Dn 5.23nele vivemos, e nos movemos, e existimos, como até alguns dos vossos poetas o têm dito:

Porque dele também somos geração.

29 Sendo, pois, geração de Deus, *Is 40.18s.; cp.Rm 1.23não devemos pensar que a divindade é semelhante ao ouro, ou à prata, ou à pedra lavrada por arte e gênio do homem. 30 *cp.At 14.16;Rm 3.25Dissimulando, pois, os tempos da *cp.At 17.23ignorância, *Lc 24.47;At 26.20;Tt 2.11s.Deus manda agora que todos os homens, em todo lugar, se arrependam, 31 porquanto tem fixado *Mt 10.15um dia em que *Jo 5.22,27;At 10.42; cp.Sl 9.8;96.13;98.9há de julgar *Mt 24.14;At 17.6o mundo com justiça, pelo varão que para isso *cp.Lc 22.22destinou, do que tem dado certeza a todos, *At 2.24ressuscitando-o dentre os mortos.

Uns zombam, outros creem

32 Mas, quando ouviram falar *At 17.18,31da ressurreição dos mortos, uns zombavam, e outros diziam: Sobre isso te ouviremos ainda outra vez. 33 Assim, Paulo saiu do meio deles. 34 Porém alguns homens agregaram-se a ele e creram; entre os quais, Dionísio, o *cp.At 17.19,22areopagita, e uma mulher chamada Dâmaris, e, com eles, outros.

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 Paul, as was his custom, went in to them; and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ."

4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas: of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women. 5 But the unpersuaded Jews took along*17:5 TR reads "And the Jews who were unpersuaded, becoming envious and taking along" instead of "But the unpersuaded Jews took along" some wicked men from the marketplace and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people. 6 When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers*17:6 The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." before the rulers of the city, crying, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here also, 7 whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!" 8 The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things. 9 When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

11 Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes. 14 Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there. 15 But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also*17:18 TR omits "also" were conversing with him. Some said, "What does this babbler want to say?"

Others said, "He seems to be advocating foreign deities," because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

19 They took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is, which you are speaking about? 20 For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean." 21 Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

22 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, "You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, I announce to you. 24 The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands. 25 He isn’t served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath and all things. 26 He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live, move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’ 29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man. 30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead."

32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, "We want to hear you again concerning this."

33 Thus Paul went out from among them. 34 But certain men joined with him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
