A instituição dos diáconos

1 Nesses dias, porém, crescendo o *At 6.7;At 2.47número dos *At 11.26discípulos, houve uma murmuração dos *At 9.29;11.20helenistas contra os *2Co 11.22;Fp 3.5hebreus, porque *cp.At 9.39,41;1Tm 5.3as viúvas daqueles eram esquecidas na *cp.At 4.35;11.29distribuição diária. 2 Os doze convocaram a comunidade dos discípulos e disseram: Não é justo que nós abandonemos a palavra de Deus e sirvamos às mesas. 3 Mas, *At 1.15; cp.Jo 21.23irmãos, escolhei dentre vós sete homens de boa reputação, *cp.At 2.4cheios do Espírito e de sabedoria, aos quais encarregaremos desse serviço; 4 e *At 1.14nós atenderemos, de contínuo, à oração e ao ministério da palavra. 5 O parecer agradou a toda a comunidade; eles escolheram *At 6.8ss.;At 11.19;22.20Estêvão, homem *At 6.3; cp.At 11.24cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, *At 8.5ss.;21.8Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timão, Pármenas e Nicolau, *Mt 23.15prosélito de *At 11.19Antioquia 6 e apresentaram-nos perante os apóstolos; e estes, *At 1.24tendo orado, *At 13.3;1Tm 4.14;2Tm 1.6; cp.Nm 8.10;27.18;Dt 34.9; cp.At 8.17ss.;9.17;19.6;Hb 6.2;Mc 5.23lhes impuseram as mãos.

Muitos sacerdotes creram

7 Divulgava-se *At 12.24;19.20a palavra de Deus, e se multiplicava muito *At 6.1;At 2.47o número dos discípulos em Jerusalém; também muitos sacerdotes obedeciam *cp.At 13.8;14.22;Gl 1.23;6.10;Jd 3,20à fé.

Estêvão perante o Sinédrio

8 Estêvão, cheio de graça e poder, fazia grandes *Jo 4.48prodígios e milagres entre o povo. 9 Levantaram-se, porém, alguns dos que eram da sinagoga, chamada dos Libertos, *cp.At 2.10;Mt 27.32dos cireneus, *cp.At 18.24, etc.dos alexandrinos e dos *cp.At 15.23,41;21.39;22.3;23.34;27.5;Gl 1.21da Cilícia e *cp.At 16.6;19.10;21.27;24.18, etc.Ásia, e disputavam com Estêvão; 10 e não podiam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito pelo qual ele falava. 11 Então, subornaram homens que diziam: Temo-lo ouvido proferir palavras de blasfêmia contra Moisés e contra Deus; 12 também sublevaram ao povo, *At 4.1;Lc 20.1aos anciãos e aos escribas, e, investindo contra ele, arrebataram-no, e levaram-no *Mt 5.22ao Sinédrio, 13 e apresentaram *Mt 26.59-61; cp.At 7.58falsas testemunhas, que diziam: Este homem não cessa de proferir palavras contra o *Mt 24.15;At 21.28; cp.At 25.8lugar santo e contra a Lei; 14 porque o temos ouvido dizer que *Mt 26.61esse Jesus, o Nazareno, há de destruir este lugar e há de mudar *At 15.1;21.21;26.3;28.17os costumes que Moisés nos deixou. 15 Todos os que estavam sentados no *Mt 5.22Sinédrio, fitando os olhos nele, viram o seu rosto como o rosto de um anjo.

1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, a complaint arose from the Hellenists*6:1 The Hellenists used Greek language and culture, even though they were also of Hebrew descent. against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily service. 2 The twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not appropriate for us to forsake the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, select from among you, brothers, seven men of good report, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word."

5 These words pleased the whole multitude. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles. When they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7 The word of God increased and the number of the disciples greatly multiplied in Jerusalem. A great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 Stephen, full of faith and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. 9 But some of those who were of the synagogue called "The Libertines", and of the Cyrenians, of the Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia arose, disputing with Stephen. 10 They weren’t able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." 12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and came against him and seized him, then brought him in to the council, 13 and set up false witnesses who said, "This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us." 15 All who sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face like it was the face of an angel.
