Ananias e Safira

1 Mas um homem chamado Ananias, com sua mulher Safira, vendeu uma propriedade 2 e *At 5.3reteve parte do preço, sabendo-o também sua mulher; e, levando uma parte, *At 4.35,37depositou-a aos pés dos apóstolos. 3 Pedro disse-lhe: Ananias, por que encheu *Mt 4.10; cp.Lc 22.3;Jo 13.2,27Satanás o teu coração, para que mentisses *cp.At 5.4,9ao Espírito Santo *At 5.2e retivesses parte do preço do terreno? 4 Porventura, se não o vendesses, não seria ele teu; e, vendido, não estava o preço no teu poder? Como formaste esse desígnio no teu coração? Não mentiste aos homens, mas a Deus. 5 Ananias, ao ouvir essas palavras, *At 5.10; cp.Ez 11.13caiu e expirou; e sobreveio *At 5.11;At 2.43grande temor a todos os ouvintes. 6 Levantando-se os moços, *cp.Jo 19.40amortalharam-no e, levando-o para fora, sepultaram-no.

7 Depois de um intervalo de cerca de três horas, entrou sua mulher, não sabendo o que tinha sucedido. 8 Pedro perguntou-lhe: Dize-me se vendestes por *At 5.2tanto o terreno? Ela respondeu: Sim; por tanto. 9 Mas Pedro disse-lhe: Por que é que vós combinastes *cp.At 15.10provar o *cp.At 5.4Espírito do Senhor? Eis à porta os pés dos que sepultaram teu marido, e eles te levarão a ti para fora. 10 Imediatamente, caiu aos pés dele e expirou. Entrando os mancebos, acharam-na morta e, levando-a para fora, sepultaram-na junto a seu marido. 11 Sobreveio grande temor a toda a igreja e a todos os que ouviram essas coisas.

Os apóstolos fazem muitos milagres

12 Faziam-se muitos *Jo 4.48milagres e prodígios entre o povo pelas mãos dos apóstolos. Todos estavam de comum acordo no *At 3.11;Jo 10.23Pórtico de Salomão; 13 dos outros, porém, nenhum ousava ajuntar-se a eles, mas *At 2.47; cp.4.21o povo os engrandecia. 14 Cada vez mais *At 2.47;11.24se agregavam *2Co 6.15crentes ao Senhor, homens e mulheres em grande número, 15 a ponto de levarem os enfermos até pelas ruas e os porem em leitos e enxergões, para que, ao passar Pedro, *cp.At 19.12ao menos a sua sombra cobrisse algum deles. 16 Também das cidades circunvizinhas de Jerusalém afluía uma multidão, trazendo enfermos e atormentados de espíritos imundos, os quais eram todos curados.

Os apóstolos presos

17 Levantando-se, porém, o sumo sacerdote e todos os que estavam com ele (que eram da *At 15.5seita dos *Mt 3.7; cp.At 4.1saduceus), encheram-se de inveja, 18 prenderam os apóstolos e *At 4.3os recolheram à prisão pública. 19 Mas *Mt 1.20,24;2.13,19;28.2;Lc 1.11;2.9;At 8.26;12.7,23; cp.10.3;27.23um anjo do Senhor abriu de noite as portas do cárcere e, conduzindo-os para fora, disse-lhes: 20 Ide e, no templo, postos em pé, falai ao povo *cp.Jo 6.63,68todas as palavras desta vida. 21 Tendo ouvido isso, entraram, *cp.Jo 8.2ao amanhecer, no templo e ensinavam. Mas, comparecendo o *At 4.6sumo sacerdote e os que estavam com ele, convocaram o *Mt 5.22;At 5.27,34,41Sinédrio e todo o senado dos filhos de Israel e enviaram os oficiais ao cárcere para trazê-los. 22 Mas *Mt 26.58;At 5.26os oficiais que lá foram não os acharam no cárcere; e, tendo voltado, relataram: 23 Achamos o cárcere fechado com toda a segurança e os guardas às portas, mas, abrindo-as, a ninguém achamos dentro. 24 Quando *At 4.1;At 5.26o capitão do templo e os principais sacerdotes ouviram essas palavras, ficaram perplexos a respeito deles e do que viria a ser isso. 25 Chegou alguém e anunciou-lhes: Eis que os homens que metestes no cárcere estão no templo, postos em pé, e ensinando o povo. 26 Nisso, foi o *At 5.24capitão com *At 5.22os oficiais e os trouxe sem violência, porque *At 4.21;At 5.13eles temiam ser apedrejados pelo povo. 27 Tendo-os trazido, os apresentaram no *Mt 5.22;At 5.21,34,41Sinédrio. O sumo sacerdote interrogou-os, 28 dizendo: *At 4.18Expressamente vos admoestamos que não ensinásseis nesse nome, e eis que tendes enchido Jerusalém com o vosso ensino *At 2.23,36;3.14s.; cp.7.52;Mt 23.35;27.25e quereis trazer sobre nós o sangue desse homem. 29 Mas Pedro e os apóstolos responderam: *At 4.19Importa antes obedecer a Deus que aos homens. 30 *At 3.13O Deus de nossos pais *At 2.24ressuscitou a Jesus, que vós *At 10.39; cp.13.29;Gl 3.13;1Pe 2.24matastes, pendurando-o num madeiro; 31 *At 2.33a este elevou Deus com a sua destra a *At 3.15Príncipe e *Lc 2.11Salvador, para dar *Lc 24.47; cp.At 2.38arrependimento a Israel e remissão de pecados. 32 Nós somos *Lc 24.48testemunhas dessas coisas, *cp.Jo 15.26;At 15.28;Rm 8.16;Hb 2.4e bem assim o Espírito Santo, que Deus deu aos que lhe obedecem.

O parecer de Gamaliel

33 Mas eles, quando ouviram isso, *At 7.54; cp.2.37se enfureceram e queriam matá-los. 34 Levantando-se, porém, *At 5.21no Sinédrio um fariseu chamado *At 22.3Gamaliel, *Lc 2.46;5.17doutor da lei, acatado por todo o povo, mandou retirar os apóstolos por um pouco 35 e disse: Israelitas, atentai bem para o que ides fazer a estes homens. 36 Pois faz já algum tempo que Teudas se levantou, *At 8.9; cp.Gl 2.6;6.3dizendo ser alguma coisa, ao qual se ajuntaram uns quatrocentos homens; ele foi morto, e todos quantos lhe obedeciam foram dissolvidos e reduzidos a nada. 37 Depois deste, levantou-se Judas, o galileu, nos dias do *cp.Lc 2.2alistamento, e levou muitos consigo; este também pereceu, e todos quantos lhe obedeciam foram dispersos. 38 Agora, vos digo: não vos metais com esses homens, mas deixai-os; porque, se este conselho ou esta obra *cp.Mc 11.30for de homens, se desfará; 39 mas, se é de Deus, não podereis desfazê-la, para que não sejais, porventura, achados até *cp.At 11.17;Pv 21.30pelejando contra Deus. 40 Concordaram com ele; e, tendo chamado os apóstolos, *Mt 10.17açoitaram-nos, e ordenaram-lhes que não falassem em o nome de Jesus, e soltaram-nos. 41 Eles, pois, saíram do Sinédrio, *1Pe 4.14,16regozijando-se por terem sido achados dignos de sofrer afrontas *Jo 15.21pelo nome de Jesus. 42 E *At 2.46todos os dias, no templo e em casa, não cessavam de ensinar e *At 8.35;11.20;17.18;Gl 1.16pregar a Jesus, o Cristo.

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it, then brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God."

5 Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Great fear came on all who heard these things. 6 The young men arose and wrapped him up, and they carried him out and buried him. 7 About three hours later, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. 8 Peter answered her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much."

She said, "Yes, for so much."

9 But Peter asked her, "How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."

10 She fell down immediately at his feet and died. The young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband. 11 Great fear came on the whole assembly, and on all who heard these things.

12 By the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. They were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. 13 None of the rest dared to join them; however, the people honored them. 14 More believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women. 15 They even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might overshadow some of them. 16 The multitude also came together from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits; and they were all healed.

17 But the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy 18 and laid hands on the apostles, then put them in public custody. 19 But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night, and brought them out and said, 20 "Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life."

21 When they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak and taught. But the high priest and those who were with him came and called the council together, with all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But the officers who came didn’t find them in the prison. They returned and reported, 23 "We found the prison shut and locked, and the guards standing before the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside!"

24 Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were very perplexed about them and what might become of this. 25 One came and told them, "Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people." 26 Then the captain went with the officers, and brought them without violence, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.

27 When they had brought them, they set them before the council. The high priest questioned them, 28 saying, "Didn’t we strictly command you not to teach in this name? Behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood on us."

29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed, hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins. 32 We are his witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

33 But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were determined to kill them. 34 But one stood up in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honored by all the people, and commanded to put the apostles out for a little while. 35 He said to them, "You men of Israel, be careful concerning these men, what you are about to do. 36 For before these days Theudas rose up, making himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves. He was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the enrollment, and drew away some people after him. He also perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad. 38 Now I tell you, withdraw from these men and leave them alone. For if this counsel or this work is of men, it will be overthrown. 39 But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it, and you would be found even to be fighting against God!"

40 They agreed with him. Summoning the apostles, they beat them and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for Jesus’ name.

42 Every day, in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and preaching Jesus, the Christ.
