1 Ora, no duodécimo mês, que é o mês de Adar, aos treze dias do mesmo, em que a ordem do rei, e o seu decreto, chegou para se executar, no dia em que os inimigos dos judeus esperavam assenhorear-se deles, sucedeu o contrário, de sorte que os judeus se assenhorearam dos que os odiavam.
2 Os judeus se tinham ajuntado nas suas cidades, em todas as províncias do rei Assuero, para atacarem os que lhes procuravam o mal. Ninguém podia resistir-lhes, pois o medo que inspiravam tinha caído sobre todos os povos.
3 Todos os príncipes das províncias, e os sátrapas e os governadores e os que faziam a obra do rei, tinham estado ajudando os judeus, porque o medo que tinham de Mordecai se apoderara deles.
4 Pois Mordecai era grande na casa do rei, e a sua fama ia crescendo em todas as províncias, porque se ia engrandecendo mais e mais.
5 Os judeus feriram à espada a todos os seus inimigos e os mataram e fizeram perecer: aos que os odiavam eles trataram como quiseram.
6 No castelo de Susã os judeus mataram e destruíram quinhentos homens.
7 Também mataram a Persandata, Dalom, Aspata,
8 Porata, Adalia, Aridata,
9 Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai e Vaisata,
10 os dez filhos de Hamã, filho de Hamedata, e inimigo dos judeus; porém no despojo não tocaram.
11 Nesse mesmo dia veio ao conhecimento do rei o número dos que foram mortos no castelo de Susã.
12 O rei disse à rainha Ester: No castelo de Susã mataram e destruíram os judeus quinhentos homens e os dez filhos de Hamã; que não terão eles feito no resto da província do rei? Ora, qual é a tua petição? e te será concedida; e qual é ainda o teu rogo? e cumprir-se-á.
13 Respondeu Ester: Se parecer bem ao rei, conceda-se aos judeus que estão em Susã que façam amanhã também segundo o decreto de hoje, e sejam pendurados na forca os dez filhos de Hamã.
14 O rei mandou que assim se fizesse; o decreto foi divulgado em Susã, e dependuraram os dez filhos de Hamã.
15 Os judeus que estavam em Susã ajuntaram-se também no dia quatorze do mês de Adar, e mataram trezentos homens em Susã; porém, no despojo não tocaram.
16 Os demais judeus que estavam nas províncias do rei ajuntaram-se, e dispuseram-se para defender as suas vidas, e tiveram descanso dos seus inimigos, e mataram dos que os odiavam setenta e cinco mil; porém, no despojo não tocaram.
17 Sucedeu isso no dia treze do mês de Adar; no dia quatorze do mesmo descansaram, e fizeram-no dia de banquetes e de alegria.
18 Mas os judeus que estavam em Susã ajuntaram-se no dia treze como também no dia quatorze do mesmo; no dia quinze descansaram, e fizeram-no dia de banquetes e de alegria.
19 Portanto, os judeus das vilas, que assistem nas aldeias não muradas, fazem o dia quatorze do mês de Adar dia de alegria e de banquetes, e de festas, e dia de enviarem quinhões uns aos outros.
20 Mordecai escreveu estas coisas, e enviou cartas a todos os judeus que estavam em todas as províncias do rei Assuero, aos de perto e aos de longe,
21 ordenando-lhes que celebrassem o dia quatorze do mês de Adar e o dia quinze do mesmo todos os anos,
22 como os dias em que os judeus tiveram descanso dos seus inimigos, e como o mês que se lhes mudou de tristeza em alegria, e de pranto em festim, a fim de que os fizessem dias de banquetes e de alegria, em que enviassem quinhões uns aos outros, e dádivas aos pobres.
23 Os judeus encarregaram-se de fazer como já tinham começado e como Mordecai lhes tinha escrito;
24 porque Hamã, filho de Hamedata, agagita, inimigo dos judeus, tinha formado contra os judeus o projeto de os destruir, e tinha deitado Pur, que quer dizer, sortes para os assolar e para os destruir.
25 Vindo isso perante o rei, mandou ele por cartas que o mau desígnio que Hamã tinha excogitado contra os judeus, recaísse sobre a cabeça dele, e que ele e seus filhos fossem pendurados na forca.
26 Pelo que se chamaram esses dias Purim, por causa do nome de Pur. Portanto por causa das palavras desta carta, e do que tinham testemunhado, e do que lhes havia sucedido,
27 os judeus estabeleceram e tomaram sobre si, sobre os seus descendentes e sobre todos os que haviam de unir-se com eles, a resolução irrevogável de que fossem celebrados estes dois dias, de acordo com a carta que os prescreveu, e de acordo com o tempo marcado para eles; em todos os anos;
28 e que esses dias fossem lembrados e celebrados em todas as gerações, em todas as famílias, em todas as províncias e em todas as cidades; e que esses dias de Purim não fossem revogados entre os judeus, nem o memorial deles se extinguisse dentre os seus descendentes.
29 Então escreveram à rainha Ester, filha de Abiail, e o judeu Mordecai com toda a autoridade uma segunda vez para confirmar a carta a respeito de Purim.
30 Enviaram cartas a todos os judeus, às cento e vinte e sete províncias do reino de Assuero, palavras de paz e de verdade,
31 para confirmar estes dias de Purim nos seus tempos determinados, como o judeu Mordecai e a rainha Ester lhes tinham ordenado, e como eles se tinham obrigado por si e pela sua descendência, nas particularidades de jejuns e do seu clamor.
32 O mandamento de Ester confirmou estas particularidades de Purim; e foi escrito no livro.
1 Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it turned out that the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them), 2 the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people. 3 All the princes of the provinces, the local governors, the governors, and those who did the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater. 5 The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them. 6 In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men. 7 They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, 8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, 9 Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha, 10 the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.
11 On that day, the number of those who were slain in the citadel of Susa was brought before the king. 12 The king said to Esther the queen, "The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done."
13 Then Esther said, "If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows."
14 The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons. 15 The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.
16 The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder. 17 This was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of that month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
18 But the Jews who were in Susa assembled together on the thirteenth and on the fourteenth days of the month; and on the fifteenth day of that month, they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness. 19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day of sending presents of food to one another.
20 Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly, 22 as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy. 23 The Jews accepted the custom that they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them, 24 because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast "Pur", that is the lot, to consume them and to destroy them; 25 but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26 Therefore they called these days "Purim", from the word "Pur." Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them, 27 the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year; 28 and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.
29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim. 30 He sent letters to all the Jews in the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth, 31 to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants in the matter of the fastings and their mourning. 32 The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
