Os dez mandamentos

1 Então, falou Deus todas estas palavras, dizendo:

2 Eu sou Jeová, teu Deus, *Êx 15.13,16;Dt 5.6;7.8que te tirei da terra do Egito, da casa de servidão.

3 Não terás outros *Êx 15.11;20.23deuses diante de mim.

4 *Lv 26.1;Dt 4.15-19;27.15Não farás para ti imagem de escultura, nem figura alguma do que há em cima no céu, nem embaixo na terra, nem nas águas debaixo da terra. 5 *Êx 23.24Não as adorarás, nem lhes darás culto, porque eu, Jeová, teu Deus, sou *Êx 34.14;Dt 4.24Deus zeloso, que *Êx 34.6-7;Dt 5.9-10visito a iniquidade dos pais nos filhos, na terceira e na quarta geração daqueles que me aborrecem, 6 e uso misericórdia *Dt 7.9até mil gerações daqueles que me amam e guardam os meus mandamentos.

7 *Lv 19.12;Dt 6.13;10.20Não tomarás o nome de Jeová, teu Deus, em vão, porque Jeová não terá por inocente aquele que tomar o seu nome em vão.

8 Lembra-te do *Êx 23.12;31.15dia de sábado, para o santificar. 9 Seis dias trabalharás e *Êx 34.21;35.2-3farás toda a tua obra; 10 mas o sétimo dia é o sábado de Jeová, teu Deus. Nesse dia, não farás obra alguma, nem tu, nem teu filho, nem tua filha, nem teu servo, nem tua serva, nem teu animal, nem o teu estrangeiro que está das tuas portas para dentro; 11 *Êx 31.17;Gn 2.2-3porque em seis dias fez Jeová o céu e a terra, o mar e tudo o que neles há; por isso, Jeová abençoou o dia sétimo e o santificou.

12 *Lv 19.3;Mt 15.4;19.19;Ef 6.2Honrarás a teu pai e a tua mãe, para que *Dt 5.16,33;6.2;11.9se prolonguem os teus dias na terra que Jeová, teu Deus, te dá.

17 *Rm 7.7;13.9Não cobiçarás a casa do teu próximo, não cobiçarás a mulher do teu próximo, nem o seu servo, nem a sua serva, nem o seu boi, nem o seu jumento, nem coisa alguma que lhe pertença.

Leis acerca dos ídolos e dos altares

22 Então, disse Jeová a Moisés: Assim dirás aos filhos de Israel: Vós mesmos tendes visto que *Dt 4.36;5.24,26;Ne 9.3do céu eu vos falei. 23 *Êx 20.3Não fareis outros deuses ao lado de mim; *Dt 29.17deuses de prata ou deuses de ouro, não os fareis para vós. 24 *Êx 27.1-8Um altar de terra me farás e sobre ele sacrificarás os teus *Êx 10.25;18.12holocaustos e as tuas *Êx 24.5ofertas pacíficas, as tuas ovelhas e os teus bois. Em todo lugar *Dt 12.5;26.2em que eu fizer recordar o meu nome, virei ter contigo e te abençoarei. 25 Se me edificares um altar de *Dt 27.5-6pedras, não o edificarás de pedras lavradas; pois, se levantares sobre ele a tua ferramenta, tê-lo-ás profanado. 26 Nem subirás por degraus ao meu altar, para que a *Êx 28.42-43tua nudez não seja ali exposta.

3 "You shall have no other gods before me.

4 "You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God,*20:7 or, You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who misuses his name.

8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 You shall labor six days, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; 11 for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.

12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

13 "You shall not murder.

14 "You shall not commit adultery.

15 "You shall not steal.

16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 "You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s."

18 All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance. 19 They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die."

20 Moses said to the people, "Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin." 21 The people stayed at a distance, and Moses came near to the thick darkness where God was.

22 Yahweh said to Moses, "This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 You shall most certainly not make gods of silver or gods of gold for yourselves to be alongside me. 24 You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. 25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. 26 You shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.’
