A Lei é impotente para salvar. O justo viverá da fé

1 Ó insensatos *cp.Gl 1.2gálatas! Quem vos fascinou a vós, ante cujos olhos *cp.1Co 1.23;Gl 5.11foi representado Jesus Cristo como crucificado? 2 Só isso quero saber de vós: recebestes o Espírito por obras da lei ou pela *cp.Rm 10.17mensagem da fé? 3 Sois tão insensatos? Tendo começado no Espírito, estais agora vos aperfeiçoando na carne? 4 Sofrestes tantas coisas em vão? *cp.1Co 15.2Se é que, na verdade, foram em vão. 5 Aquele que vos *Fp 1.19; cp.2Co 9.10subministra o Espírito e *cp.1Co 12.10opera milagres entre vós, acaso fá-lo ele por obras da lei ou pela *cp.Rm 10.17mensagem da fé? 6 Justamente como *vd.Rm 4.3;Gn 15.6Abraão creu a Deus, e foi-lhe imputado para justiça. 7 Sabei, pois, que *Gl 3.9os que são da fé, estes são *vd.Lc 19.9; cp.Gl 6.16filhos de Abraão. 8 A Escritura, prevendo que Deus justificaria os gentios pela fé, de antemão, anunciou as boas-novas a Abraão: *Gn 12.3Em ti serão bem-aventuradas todas as nações. 9 Assim, *Gl 3.7os que são da fé são bem-aventurados com o fiel Abraão. 10 Pois todos quantos são das obras da lei estão sob a maldição; porque está escrito:

*Dt 27.26Maldito todo aquele que não permanece em todas as coisas escritas no livro da Lei para fazê-las.

11 É claro que, pela Lei, *Gl 2.16ninguém é justificado diante de Deus, porque:

*Rm 1.17;Hb 10.38;Hc 2.4O justo viverá da fé.

12 A Lei não é da fé, mas:

*Lv 18.5;Rm 10.5Aquele que faz essas coisas viverá por elas.

13 Cristo *Gl 4.5nos remiu da maldição da Lei, tornando-se maldição por nós, porque está escrito:

*Dt 21.23; vd.At 5.30Maldito todo aquele que é pendurado no madeiro,

14 para que *Rm 4.9,16; cp.Gl 3.28sobre os gentios viesse a bênção de Abraão em Jesus Cristo, a fim de que nós *Gl 3.2recebêssemos a *vd.At 2.33; cp.Ef 1.13promessa do Espírito, por meio da fé.

A Lei não pode invalidar as promessas

15 *vd.Gl 6.18;Rm 1.13;At 1.15Irmãos, *vd.Rm 3.5falo como homem. *cp.Hb 6.16Ainda que a aliança seja só de homem, contudo, uma vez confirmada, ninguém a anula ou lhe acrescenta coisa alguma. 16 Ora, *cp.Lc 1.55;Rm 4.13,16;9.4a Abraão foram feitas as promessas e à sua semente. Não diz: *cp.At 3.25;Gn 13.15;17.8E às sementes, como falando de muitos; mas, como de um: E à tua semente, a qual é Cristo. 17 Digo isto: Uma aliança previamente confirmada por Deus, a Lei, que veio *Êx 12.40; cp.Gn 15.13s.;At 7.6quatrocentos e trinta anos depois, não a ab-roga, de modo a tornar de nenhum efeito a promessa. 18 Pois, *Rm 4.14se da Lei vem a herança, não é mais da promessa; mas pela promessa é que *cp.Hb 6.14Deus a deu a Abraão. 19 *vd.Rm 5.20Que é, pois, a Lei? Foi acrescentada por causa das transgressões, até *Gl 3.16que viesse a semente a quem se fez a promessa, tendo sido *vd.At 7.53ordenada mediante anjos, *Êx 20.19;Dt 5.5pela mão de um mediador. 20 *cp.1Tm 2.5;Hb 8.6;9.15;12.24O mediador, porém, não o é de um só, mas Deus é só um. 21 É a Lei, porventura, contra as promessas de Deus? *vd.Lc 20.16;Gl 2.17De modo nenhum! Pois, *Gl 2.21se tivesse sido dada uma lei que pudesse dar vida, a justiça, na verdade, teria sido pela Lei. 22 A Escritura, porém, *vd.Rm 11.32encerrou todas as *cp.1Co 1.27coisas debaixo do pecado, para que a promessa pela fé em Jesus Cristo fosse dada aos que creem.

A Lei é pedagogo para nos conduzir a Cristo

23 Mas, antes que viesse a fé, estávamos debaixo da guarda da Lei, encerrados para a fé que havia de ser revelada. 24 Assim, a Lei se tornou nosso *1Co 4.15pedagogo, para conduzir-nos a Cristo, a fim de *Gl 2.16sermos justificados pela fé. 25 Mas, tendo vindo a fé, não estamos mais debaixo de pedagogo. 26 Pois todos vós sois *Gl 4.5; vd.Rm 8.14filhos de Deus, mediante a fé em *Gl 3.28;Gl 4.14;5.6,24; vd.Rm 8.1;Ef 1.1;Cl 1.4;Fp 1.1;1Tm 1.12;2Tm 1.1;Tt 1.4, etc.Cristo Jesus; 27 porque tantos quantos fostes *vd.Mt 28.19;Rm 6.3; cp.1Co 10.2batizados em Cristo *vd.Rm 13.14vos revestistes de Cristo. 28 *vd.1Co 12.13;Cl 3.11; cp.Rm 3.22Não pode haver judeu nem grego, não pode haver escravo nem livre, não pode haver homem nem mulher, pois todos *cp.Jo 17.11;Ef 2.15vós sois um em *vd.Gl 3.26Cristo Jesus. 29 Mas, se *cp.1Co 3.23vós sois de Cristo, então, sois semente de Abraão, herdeiros segundo a *Gl 3.18;Gl 4.28;Rm 9.8promessa.

1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 I just want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? 5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you and does miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 6 Even so, Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness."✝3:6 Genesis 15:6 7 Know therefore that those who are of faith are children of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you all the nations will be blessed."✝3:8 Genesis 12:3; 18:18; 22:18 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them."✝3:10 Deuteronomy 27:26 11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith."✝3:11 Habakkuk 2:4 12 The law is not of faith, but, "The man who does them will live by them."✝3:12 Leviticus 18:5

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"✝3:13 Deuteronomy 21:23 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void or adds to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring.*3:16 or, seed He doesn’t say, "To descendants*3:16 or, seeds", as of many, but as of one, "To your offspring",✝3:16 Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 24:7 which is Christ. 17 Now I say this: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

19 Then why is there the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.
