1 mas Jesus foi para o *Mt 21.1monte das Oliveiras. 2 De madrugada, voltou ao templo, e todo o povo ia ter com ele; e Jesus, *Mt 26.55;Jo 8.20sentando-se o ensinava. 3 Os escribas e os fariseus trouxeram uma mulher apanhada em adultério, puseram-na no meio de todos 4 e disseram a Jesus: Mestre, esta mulher tem sido apanhada em flagrante adultério. 5 *Lv 20.10;Dt 22.22s.Moisés nos ordenou na Lei que tais mulheres sejam apedrejadas; tu, pois, que dizes? 6 Isso diziam, *Mt 16.1;19.3;22.18,35;Mc 8.11;10.2;12.15;Lc 10.25;11.16experimentando-o, *Mc 3.2para ter de que o acusar. Jesus, porém, abaixando-se começou a escrever no chão com o dedo. 7 Como eles insistissem na pergunta, *Jo 8.10levantou-se e disse-lhes: *cp.Mt 7.1;Rm 2.1Aquele que dentre vós está sem pecado *cp.Dt 17.7seja o primeiro que lhe atire uma pedra. 8 Tornando a abaixar-se, continuou a escrever no chão. 9 Mas, ouvindo essa resposta, foram saindo um a um, começando pelos mais velhos, ficando só Jesus e a mulher no lugar em que estava. 10 Então, *Jo 8.7levantando-se Jesus, perguntou-lhe: Mulher, onde estão eles? Ninguém te condenou? 11 Respondeu ela: Ninguém, Senhor. Disse Jesus: *cp.Jo 3.17Nem eu tampouco te condeno; *Jo 5.14vai e não peques mais.]

Jesus é a luz do mundo

12 Então, Jesus tornou a falar-lhes, dizendo: *Jo 1.4; cp.12.35Eu sou a luz do mundo; *cp.Mt 5.14quem me segue de modo nenhum andará nas trevas; pelo contrário, terá a luz da vida. 13 Disseram-lhe os fariseus: *cp.Jo 5.31Tu dás testemunho de ti mesmo; o teu testemunho não é verdadeiro. 14 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: *cp.Jo 18.37;Ap 1.5;3.14Ainda que eu dou testemunho de mim mesmo, o meu testemunho é verdadeiro; porque sei *Jo 13.3;16.28; cp.Jo 8.42de onde vim e para onde vou; mas *cp.Jo 7.28;9.29vós não sabeis donde venho, nem para onde vou. 15 *1Sm 16.7;Jo 7.24Vós julgais segundo a carne, *Jo 3.17eu a ninguém julgo. 16 *Jo 5.30E, se eu julgo, o meu juízo é verdadeiro; porque não estou só, mas o Pai, que me enviou, está comigo. 17 Na vossa Lei está escrito que o testemunho de *cp.Dt 19.15;17.6;Mt 18.16duas pessoas é verdadeiro. 18 Eu dou testemunho de mim, *Jo 5.37; cp.1Jo 5.9e meu Pai, que me enviou, também dá testemunho de mim. 19 Estes lhe perguntaram: Onde está teu Pai? Respondeu Jesus: Não me conheceis a mim, nem a meu Pai; *Jo 14.7;16.3; cp.7.28;14.9;Jo 8.55se me conhecêsseis, também conheceríeis a meu Pai. 20 Proferiu ele essas palavras *Mc 12.41,43;Lc 21.1no lugar do gazofilácio, *Jo 7.14; cp.Jo 8.2quando ensinava no templo; e ninguém o prendeu, *Jo 7.30porque não era ainda chegada a sua hora.

Jesus defende a sua missão e autoridade

21 Disse-lhes outra vez: Eu vou retirar-me, *Jo 7.34e me buscareis *Jo 8.24e morrereis em vossos pecados; para onde eu vou, vós não podeis ir. 22 Então, diziam *Jo 1.19;Jo 8.48,52,57os judeus: Será caso que se suicide, pois diz: *cp.Jo 7.35Para onde eu vou, não podeis vós ir? 23 Disse-lhes Jesus: Vós *cp.Jo 3.31sois cá de baixo; eu sou lá de cima; *1Jo 4.5vós sois deste mundo; *Jo 17.14,16eu não sou deste mundo. 24 Por isso, eu vos disse que morrereis em vossos pecados; porque, se não crerdes *Jo 8.28;Mc 13.6;Lc 21.8; cp.Mt 24.5;Jo 4.26;13.19que Eu Sou, morrereis em vossos pecados. 25 Perguntaram-lhe, então: Quem és tu? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Perguntais aquilo que vos tenho dito desde o princípio? 26 Muitas coisas tenho a falar e a julgar acerca de vós; *Jo 7.28; cp.3.33mas aquele que me enviou é verdadeiro, *cp.Jo 12.49;15.15;Jo 8.40e o que dele ouvi, isto falo ao mundo. 27 Eles não perceberam que ele lhes falava do Pai. 28 Jesus, pois, continuou: Quando tiverdes *Jo 3.14;12.32levantado o Filho do Homem, então, conhecereis que *Jo 8.24;Mc 13.6;Lc 21.8; cp.Mt 24.5;Jo 4.26;13.19Eu Sou e que *Jo 5.19; cp.3.11nada faço de mim mesmo, mas, como me ensinou o Pai, assim falo. 29 Quem me enviou está comigo; *Jo 8.16;Jo 16.32ele não me deixou só, porque *cp.Jo 4.34eu faço sempre as coisas que são do seu agrado. 30 Falando essas coisas, *Jo 7.31muitos creram nele.

31 Disse, pois, Jesus aos judeus que o haviam crido: *Jo 15.7;2Jo 9Se vós permanecerdes na minha palavra, verdadeiramente sois meus *Jo 2.2discípulos, 32 *cp.Jo 1.14,17conhecereis a verdade, *Jo 8.36; cp.Rm 8.2;2Co 3.17;Gl 5.1,13;Tg 2.12;1Pe 2.16e a verdade vos libertará. 33 Eles lhe responderam: *Jo 8.37,39;Mt 3.9Nós somos descendência de Abraão e nunca temos sido escravos de ninguém; como dizes tu: Vós sereis livres? 34 Replicou-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: *Rm 6.16;2Pe 2.19todo o que comete pecado é escravo do pecado. 35 *Gn 21.10;Gl 4.30O escravo não fica para sempre na casa; *Lc 15.31o filho fica para sempre. 36 Se, pois, o Filho *Jo 8.32vos libertar, sereis realmente livres. 37 Sei que sois descendência de *Jo 8.37,39;Mt 3.9Abraão; mas *Jo 8.40;Jo 7.1procurais tirar-me a vida, porque a minha palavra não cabe em vós. 38 Eu falo o que tenho visto na presença de meu Pai; e vós fazeis o que ouvistes de *Jo 8.41,44vosso pai. 39 Responderam-lhe eles: Nós somos filhos de Abraão. Disse-lhes Jesus: *cp.Rm 9.7;Gl 3.7Se sois filhos de Abraão, fazei as obras de Abraão; 40 mas agora procurais tirar-me a vida, a mim que vos tenho *cp.Jo 8.26falado a verdade que ouvi de Deus; isso Abraão não fez. 41 Vós fazeis as obras de vosso pai. Responderam-lhe eles: Nós não somos bastardos; *Dt 32.6;Is 63.16;64.8temos um pai, que é Deus. 42 Replicou-lhes Jesus: Se Deus fosse vosso pai, *1Jo 5.1vós me amaríeis; *Jo 13.3;16.28,30;17.8porque eu vim de Deus e estou aqui; pois *Jo 7.28não vim de mim mesmo, *Jo 3.17mas ele me enviou. 43 Por que não compreendeis a *Jo 8.33,39,41, etc.minha linguagem? É porque não podeis *cp.Jo 5.25ouvir as minhas palavras. 44 *1Jo 3.8Vós sois *Jo 8.38,41filhos do Diabo *cp.Jo 7.17e tendes vontade de cumprir os desejos de vosso pai. *Gn 3.4; cp.1Jo 3.8,15Ele era homicida desde o princípio e não permaneceu na verdade, porque *1Jo 2.4não há nele verdade. Quando ele diz uma mentira, *cp.Mt 12.34fala do que lhe é próprio, porque é mentiroso e o pai da mentira. 45 Mas porque *Jo 18.37eu digo a verdade, vós não me credes. 46 Qual de vós me convence de pecado? Abraão morreu, e também os profetas, e tu dizes: Se alguém guardar a minha palavra, nunca jamais *Jo 8.51provará a morte. 53 *cp.Jo 4.12Porventura, és tu maior do que nosso pai Abraão, que morreu? Também os profetas morreram. Se eu disser que não o conheço, serei, como vós, *cp.Jo 8.44mentiroso; mas eu o conheço *Jo 15.10; cp.Jo 8.51e guardo a sua palavra. 56 *Jo 8.37,39Vosso pai Abraão *cp.Mt 13.17;Hb 11.13alegrou-se de ver o meu dia, viu-o e regozijou-se. 57 Perguntaram-lhe os judeus: Ainda não tens cinquenta anos e viste a Abraão? 58 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: antes que Abraão fosse feito, *cp.Jo 17.5,24;1.1Eu Sou. 59 Então, *Jo 10.31;11.8; cp.Mt 12.14pegaram em pedras, para lhe atirar, mas ele *Jo 12.36encobriu-se e saiu do templo.

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle, 4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.✝8:5 Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22 What then do you say about her?" 6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of.

But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her." 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.

9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle. 10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, "Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"

11 She said, "No one, Lord."

Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."*8:11 NU includes John 7:53–John 8:11, but puts brackets around it to indicate that the textual critics had less confidence that this was original.

12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world.✝8:12 Isaiah 60:1 He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."

13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."

14 Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. 16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. 17 It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.✝8:17 Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15 18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."

19 They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?"

Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. 21 Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can’t come."

22 The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come’?"

23 He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. 24 I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am*8:24 or, I AM he, you will die in your sins."

25 They said therefore to him, "Who are you?"

Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However, he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."

27 They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father. 28 Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things. 29 He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."

30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him. 31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." ✝8:32 Psalms 119:45

33 They answered him, "We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?"

34 Jesus answered them, "Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. 35 A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. 36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38 I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."

39 They answered him, "Our father is Abraham."

Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this. 41 You do the works of your father."

They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."

42 Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me. 46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don’t hear, because you are not of God."

48 Then the Jews answered him, "Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"

49 Jesus answered, "I don’t have a demon, but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 But I don’t seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. 51 Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."

52 Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"

54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. 55 You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, ‘I don’t know him,’ I would be like you, a liar. But I know him and keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it and was glad."

57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?"

58 Jesus said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.✝8:58 Exodus 3:14"

59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.
