A cura de um cego de nascença

1 Jesus, ao passar, viu um homem cego de nascença. 2 Perguntaram-lhe seus discípulos: *Mt 23.7Mestre, quem pecou para que este homem nascesse cego? *cp.Jo 9.34;Lc 13.2;At 28.4Ele ou *Êx 20.5seus pais? 3 Respondeu Jesus: Nem ele pecou, nem seus pais, mas *cp.Jo 11.4isso se deu para que as obras de Deus nele sejam manifestas. 4 É necessário que façamos as obras do que me enviou, *Jo 11.9;12.35; cp.7.33;Gl 6.10enquanto é dia; vem a noite, quando ninguém pode trabalhar. 5 Estando eu no mundo, sou *Jo 1.4;8.12;12.46a luz do mundo. 6 Tendo assim falado, *Mc 7.33;8.23cuspiu no chão e, fazendo lodo com o cuspo, aplicou-o aos olhos do cego, 7 dizendo: Vai lavar-te no *Jo 9.11;Lc 13.4tanque de Siloé (que quer dizer, Enviado). Ele foi, lavou-se e *Jo 11.37voltou com vista. 8 Então, os vizinhos e os que dantes o conheciam de vista, como mendigo, perguntavam: Não é este o que se *cp.At 3.2,10assentava para mendigar? 9 É ele mesmo, respondiam uns; não é, mas é parecido com ele, diziam outros. Porém ele dizia: Sou eu mesmo. 10 Perguntaram-lhe, pois: Como te foram abertos os olhos? 11 Respondeu ele: Aquele homem chamado Jesus fez lodo, ungiu-me os olhos e disse-me: Vai a *Jo 9.7Siloé e lava-te; então, fui, lavei-me e fiquei vendo. 12 Eles lhe perguntaram: Onde está ele? Respondeu: Não sei.

O cego examinado pelos fariseus

13 Levaram aos fariseus o que fora cego. 14 *Jo 5.9Ora, era sábado o dia em que Jesus fez lodo e lhe abriu os olhos. 15 *Jo 9.10Então, os fariseus, por sua vez, perguntaram-lhe como recebeu a vista. Ele respondeu: Aplicou lodo aos meus olhos, lavei-me e agora vejo. 16 Por isso, alguns dos fariseus diziam: *cp.Mt 12.2Este homem não é de Deus, porque não guarda o sábado. Outros, porém, diziam: Como pode um homem pecador fazer tais *Jo 2.11milagres? *cp.Jo 6.52;7.43;10.19Havia dissensão entre eles. 17 *cp.Jo 9.15Tornaram a perguntar ao cego: Que dizes tu a respeito dele, visto que te abriu os olhos? *Mt 21.11É profeta, respondeu ele. 18 Mas *Jo 1.19;Jo 9.22os judeus não acreditaram que ele tivesse sido cego e que tivesse recebido a vista, enquanto não chamaram os pais dele 19 e os interrogaram: É este vosso filho, que vós dizeis ter nascido cego? Como, pois, vê agora? 20 Responderam seus pais: Sabemos que este é nosso filho e que nasceu cego; 21 mas como agora vê não sabemos; ou quem lhe abriu os olhos nós não sabemos. Interrogai-o, já tem idade; ele mesmo falará por si. 22 Isso disseram seus pais, porque *cp.Jo 7.13tinham medo dos judeus, porquanto estes já *cp.Jo 7.45-52tinham combinado que, se alguém confessasse ser Jesus o Cristo, *Jo 12.42;16.2; cp.Lc 6.22fosse expulso da sinagoga. 23 Por isso, disseram seus pais: *Jo 9.21Ele já tem idade; interrogai-o. 24 Então, chamaram pela segunda vez o homem que fora cego e lhe disseram: *Js 7.19; cp.Ed 10.11;Ap 11.13Dá glória a Deus; nós sabemos que *Jo 9.16este homem é pecador. 25 Ele respondeu: Se é pecador, não sei; uma coisa sei: eu era cego e agora vejo. 26 Perguntaram-lhe, pois: Que é o que te fez? Como te abriu os olhos? 27 Ele lhes respondeu: *Jo 9.15Já vo-lo disse e não *Jo 5.25ouvistes; por que quereis ouvir outra vez? Porventura, quereis também vós tornar-vos seus discípulos? 28 Injuriaram-no e disseram: Discípulo dele és tu; *cp.Jo 5.45;Rm 2.17mas nós somos discípulos de Moisés. 29 Nós sabemos que Deus falou a Moisés, mas este não *Jo 8.14sabemos donde ele é. 30 Respondeu-lhes o homem: É maravilhoso que não saibais donde ele é; contudo, ele me abriu os olhos. 31 Sabemos que Deus não ouve a pecadores; mas, se alguém temer a *Jó 27.8s.;35.13;Sl 34.15s.;66.18;145.19;Pv 15.29;28.9;Is 1.15;Tg 5.16ss.Deus e fizer a sua vontade, a este ele ouve. 32 Desde que há mundo, nunca se ouviu que alguém abrisse os olhos a um cego de nascença. 33 *Jo 9.16; cp.Jo 3.2Se esse homem não fosse de Deus, nada poderia fazer. 34 Eles lhe replicaram: *cp.Jo 9.2Tu nasceste todo em pecados e tu nos estás ensinando? *cp.Jo 9.22,35;3Jo 10E lançaram-no fora.

Jesus revela-se ao cego

35 Soube Jesus que o haviam lançado fora e, encontrando-o, lhe perguntou: Crês tu no Filho do Homem? 36 *cp.Rm 10.14Quem é ele, Senhor, para que eu creia nele? — respondeu-lhe o homem. 37 Disse-lhe Jesus: Já o viste, *Jo 4.26e é ele quem fala contigo. 38 Ele disse: Creio, Senhor; *Mt 8.2e o adorou. 39 Jesus prosseguiu: Eu vim a este mundo *Jo 5.22,27;3.19para um juízo, a fim de que *Lc 4.18os que não veem vejam; e *Mt 13.13;15.14os que veem se tornem cegos. 40 Ouvindo isso alguns dos fariseus que estavam com ele, perguntaram-lhe: *cp.Rm 2.19Porventura somos nós também cegos? 41 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: *cp.Jo 15.22,24Se fôsseis cegos, não teríeis pecado algum; mas agora dizeis: *cp.Pv 26.12Nós vemos, fica subsistindo o vosso pecado.

1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

3 Jesus answered, "This man didn’t sin, nor did his parents, but that the works of God might be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud, 7 and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.

8 Therefore the neighbors and those who saw that he was blind before said, "Isn’t this he who sat and begged?" 9 Others were saying, "It is he." Still others were saying, "He looks like him."

He said, "I am he."

10 They therefore were asking him, "How were your eyes opened?"

11 He answered, "A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received sight."

12 Then they asked him, "Where is he?"

He said, "I don’t know."

13 They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees. 14 It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see."

16 Some therefore of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath."

Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" So there was division among them.

17 Therefore they asked the blind man again, "What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?"

He said, "He is a prophet."

18 The Jews therefore didn’t believe concerning him, that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight, 19 and asked them, "Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"

20 His parents answered them, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself." 22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."

24 So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner."

25 He therefore answered, "I don’t know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see."

26 They said to him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

27 He answered them, "I told you already, and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t also want to become his disciples, do you?"

28 They insulted him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don’t know where he comes from."

30 The man answered them, "How amazing! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, he listens to him.✝9:31 Psalms 66:18; Proverbs 15:29; 28:9 32 Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."

34 They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" Then they threw him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"

36 He answered, "Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?"

37 Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you."

38 He said, "Lord, I believe!" and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who don’t see may see; and that those who see may become blind."

40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?"

41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.
