1 Naquele dia, saiu Jesus e sentou-se à beira do lago.2 Acercou-se dele, porém, uma tal multidão, que precisou entrar numa barca. Nela se assentou, enquanto a multidão ficava à margem.3 E seus discursos foram uma série de parábolas.4 Disse ele: Um semeador saiu a semear. E, semeando, parte da semente caiu ao longo do caminho; os pássaros vieram e a comeram.5 Outra parte caiu em solo pedregoso, onde não havia muita terra, e nasceu logo, porque a terra era pouco profunda.6 Logo, porém, que o sol nasceu, queimou-se, por falta de raízes.7 Outras sementes caíram entre os espinhos: os espinhos cresceram e as sufocaram.8 Outras, enfim, caíram em terra boa: deram frutos, cem por um, sessenta por um, trinta por um.9 Aquele que tem ouvidos, ouça.10 Os discípulos aproximaram-se dele, então, para dizer-lhe: Por que lhes falas em parábolas?11 Respondeu Jesus: Porque a vós é dado compreender os mistérios do Reino dos céus, mas a eles não.12 Ao que tem, se lhe dará e terá em abundância, mas ao que não tem será tirado até mesmo o que tem.13 Eis por que lhes falo em parábolas: para que, vendo, não vejam e, ouvindo, não ouçam nem compreendam.14 Assim se cumpre para eles o que foi dito pelo profeta Isaías: Ouvireis com vossos ouvidos e não entendereis, olhareis com vossos olhos e não vereis,15 porque o coração deste povo se endureceu: taparam os seus ouvidos e fecharam os seus olhos, para que seus olhos não vejam e seus ouvidos não ouçam, nem seu coração compreenda; para que não se convertam e eu os sare {Is 6,9s}.16 Mas, quanto a vós, bem-aventurados os vossos olhos, porque vêem! Ditosos os vossos ouvidos, porque ouvem!17 Eu vos declaro, em verdade: muitos profetas e justos desejaram ver o que vedes e não o viram, ouvir o que ouvis e não ouviram.18 Ouvi, pois, o sentido da parábola do semeador:19 quando um homem ouve a palavra do Reino e não a entende, o Maligno vem e arranca o que foi semeado no seu coração. Este é aquele que recebeu a semente à beira do caminho.20 O solo pedregoso em que ela caiu é aquele que acolhe com alegria a palavra ouvida,21 mas não tem raízes, é inconstante: sobrevindo uma tribulação ou uma perseguição por causa da palavra, logo encontra uma ocasião de queda.22 O terreno que recebeu a semente entre os espinhos representa aquele que ouviu bem a palavra, mas nele os cuidados do mundo e a sedução das riquezas a sufocam e a tornam infrutuosa.23 A terra boa semeada é aquele que ouve a palavra e a compreende, e produz fruto: cem por um, sessenta por um, trinta por um.24 Jesus propôs-lhes outra parábola: O Reino dos céus é semelhante a um homem que tinha semeado boa semente em seu campo.25 Na hora, porém, em que os homens repousavam, veio o seu inimigo, semeou joio no meio do trigo e partiu.26 O trigo cresceu e deu fruto, mas apareceu também o joio.27 Os servidores do pai de família vieram e disseram-lhe: - Senhor, não semeaste bom trigo em teu campo? Donde vem, pois, o joio?28 Disse-lhes ele: - Foi um inimigo que fez isto! Replicaram-lhe: - Queres que vamos e o arranquemos?29 - Não, disse ele; arrancando o joio, arriscais a tirar também o trigo.30 Deixai-os crescer juntos até a colheita. No tempo da colheita, direi aos ceifadores: arrancai primeiro o joio e atai-o em feixes para o queimar. Recolhei depois o trigo no meu celeiro.31 Em seguida, propôs-lhes outra parábola: O Reino dos céus é comparado a um grão de mostarda que um homem toma e semeia em seu campo.32 É esta a menor de todas as sementes, mas, quando cresce, torna-se um arbusto maior que todas as hortaliças, de sorte que os pássaros vêm aninhar-se em seus ramos.33 Disse-lhes, por fim, esta outra parábola. O Reino dos céus é comparado ao fermento que uma mulher toma e mistura em três medidas de farinha e que faz fermentar toda a massa.34 Tudo isto disse Jesus à multidão em forma de parábola. De outro modo não lhe falava,35 para que se cumprisse a profecia: Abrirei a boca para ensinar em parábolas; revelarei coisas ocultas desde a criação {Sl 77,2}.36 Então despediu a multidão. Em seguida, entrou de novo na casa e seus discípulos agruparam-se ao redor dele para perguntar-lhe: Explica-nos a parábola do joio no campo.37 Jesus respondeu: O que semeia a boa semente é o Filho do Homem.38 O campo é o mundo. A boa semente são os filhos do Reino. O joio são os filhos do Maligno.39 O inimigo, que o semeia, é o demônio. A colheita é o fim do mundo. Os ceifadores são os anjos.40 E assim como se recolhe o joio para jogá-lo no fogo, assim será no fim do mundo.41 O Filho do Homem enviará seus anjos, que retirarão de seu Reino todos os escândalos e todos os que fazem o mal42 e os lançarão na fornalha ardente, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes.43 Então, no Reino de seu Pai, os justos resplandecerão como o sol. Aquele que tem ouvidos, ouça.44 O Reino dos céus é também semelhante a um tesouro escondido num campo. Um homem o encontra, mas o esconde de novo. E, cheio de alegria, vai, vende tudo o que tem para comprar aquele campo.45 O Reino dos céus é ainda semelhante a um negociante que procura pérolas preciosas.46 Encontrando uma de grande valor, vai, vende tudo o que possui e a compra.47 O Reino dos céus é semelhante ainda a uma rede que, jogada ao mar, recolhe peixes de toda espécie.48 Quando está repleta, os pescadores puxam-na para a praia, sentam-se e separam nos cestos o que é bom e jogam fora o que não presta.49 Assim será no fim do mundo: os anjos virão separar os maus do meio dos justos50 e os arrojarão na fornalha, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes.51 Compreendestes tudo isto? Sim, Senhor, responderam eles.52 Por isso, todo escriba instruído nas coisas do Reino dos céus é comparado a um pai de família que tira de seu tesouro coisas novas e velhas.53 Após ter exposto as parábolas, Jesus partiu.54 Foi para a sua cidade e ensinava na sinagoga, de modo que todos diziam admirados: Donde lhe vem esta sabedoria e esta força miraculosa?55 Não é este o filho do carpinteiro? Não é Maria sua mãe? Não são seus irmãos Tiago, José, Simão e Judas?56 E suas irmãs, não vivem todas entre nós? Donde lhe vem, pois, tudo isso?57 E não sabiam o que dizer dele. Disse-lhes, porém, Jesus: É só em sua pátria e em sua família que um profeta é menosprezado.58 E, por causa da falta de confiança deles, operou ali poucos milagres.

1 The same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea side.2 And a great multitude was gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship and sat, and the whole multitude stood on the shore.3 And he spoke many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went forth to sow;4 and when he sowed, some [of the seed] fell beside the way, and the fowls came and devoured them up.5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth; and forthwith they sprang up because they had no deepness of earth;6 and when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up and choked them.8 But some fell into good ground and brought forth fruit: one a hundredfold and another sixtyfold and another thirtyfold.9 [He] who has ears to hear, let him hear.10 Then the disciples came and said unto him, Why dost thou speak unto them in parables?11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given.12 For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that [which] he has.13 Therefore, I speak to them in parables because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which says, By hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see and shall not perceive;15 for this people's heart is waxed gross, and [their] ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed lest at any time they should see with [their] eyes and hear with [their] ears and should understand with [their] heart and should be converted, and I should heal them.16 But blessed [are] your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous [men] have desired to see [those things] which ye see and have not seen [them] and to hear [those things] which ye hear and have not heard [them].18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand [it], then the wicked [one] comes and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he who was planted beside the way.20 But he that was planted in stony places, the same is he that hears the word and receives it immediately with joy;21 yet he has no root in himself but is temporal, for when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended.22 And he that was planted among the thorns is he that hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.23 But he that was planted in good ground is he that hears the word and understands [it] and who also bears the fruit and brings forth: one a hundredfold and another sixty and another thirty.24 He put forth another parable unto them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is likened unto a man who sows good seed in his field25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went away.26 But when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit, then the tares appeared also.27 So the servants of the husband of the house came and said unto him, Lord, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? From where then does it have tares?28 He said unto them, [The] enemy, a man, has done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?29 But he said, No, lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.31 He put forth another parable unto them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field;32 which indeed is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the heaven come and make their nests in its branches.33 He spoke another parable unto them: The kingdom of the heavens is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened.34 Jesus spoke all these things unto the multitude in parables and said nothing unto them without parables35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house, and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.37 He answered and said unto them, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man;38 the field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked;39 and the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this age.41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and those who do iniquity42 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. [He] who has ears to hear, let him hear.44 Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto treasure hid in the field, which when found, a man hides it and, for the joy thereof, goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.45 Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls,46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.47 Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a net that was cast into the sea and gathered of every kind [of fish],48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore and sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.49 So shall it be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth and separate the wicked from among the just50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.51 Jesus said unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They answered unto him, Yes, Lord.52 And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe [who is] instructed in the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, a husband of a house, who brings forth out of his treasure [things] new and old.53 And it came to pass, [that] when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there.54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished and said, From where does this [man] have this wisdom and [these] mighty works?55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? From where then does this [man] have all these things?57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour except in his own country and in his own house.58 And he did not [do] many mighty works there because of their unbelief.:
